Tacenda Posted September 20, 2014 Posted September 20, 2014 (edited) If you haven't seen the first Captain you really don't understand the relationship between the Captain and the Winter Soldier. I loved the first one and enjoyed the second one also and in fact have the DVD to watch again. Guardians was very entertaining and fun and I went by myself. I think I'll go see The Giver today. I've hesitated because I've heard so many mixed reviews. I also want to go see The Maze Runner but I'll wait another week to avoid the crowds. Currently I'm watching the TV series Veronica Mars. Love the wit and the characters. On season 3. Then I need to watch the movie again because I had forgotten some of the characters.I probably should have gone to Guardians alone yesterday, my husband was not a happy camper, but he's not into most sci-fi movies. We probably should have taken the grand kids and then he would have had a better attitude. He had his mind made up from the start that he didn't like it, and couldn't believe I liked it. It's amazing how the mind works. I think if he came in with a better attitude he may have liked it and caught all the little innuendos. He picked out things that he think they messed up with in making the film. I just sat there and tried to enjoy it, at first I was worried it'd be dumb, but I became quickly engrossed in it and took it all in despite my husband giving me looks. He's not into movies much anyway and he is a very active person, so sitting is difficult. I loved Groot (sp?) and the raccoon too. Edited September 20, 2014 by Tacenda

I didn't think I would love Groot but definitely loved him by the end of the movie. I saw "God's Not Dead" last Friday night with our parish high school youth group. An awesome movie to see with the youth!
bluebell Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 I'm currently watching "Salem's Lot" with my 12 year old son (i say currently because it's really long and we only get to watch about a half and hour a night). This is the one made in the 70's i think and not the remake with Rob Lowe ( ). This movie scared the crap out of me as a little kid but now it's one of my favorite scary movies. Son was asking to be able to see that new movie Annabelle (yeah, right! The commercials are too scary for kids like i'd let him watch the actual movie. They even freak me out) so we are watching this instead. He's the kind of kid that sleeps in the basement alone and it doesn't bother him one bit so i'm interested in finding out if he actually thinks it's scary.
Deborah Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 I remember that old mini-series. It was very scary. Much better than the remake.
Garden Girl Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 I just finished watching "Sea of Grass" on Turner Classic Movies... starring Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn... classic is right... GG
Guest Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 "12 Years A Slave". Great and horrible movie from which it is hard to look away.

I read the book first, found it in a bookshelf at my grandparents' house during a family reunion. I had to stay up all night to finish it because I was too scared to go to sleep until I could finish it. That kid floating outside the window and Geoffrey Lewis in the rocking chair still give me chills!

Tacenda Posted September 28, 2014 Posted September 28, 2014 I watched "Hugo" with my Grandsons last night! Absolutely loved, loved it!! When it first came out in theatres I bypassed it. I misjudged it to the max. Was glad I saw this movie, I hope some of you will give it a chance, if you haven't already!!
3DOP Posted September 28, 2014 Posted September 28, 2014 (edited) Okay. Here comes Gable and Claudette Colbert. Poor King Wesley. It Happened One Night. What a load of loud people and loud laughs! Whatever technology does...laser beams...and Star Trek style transporter systems or not...People who love movies will be watching this in a thousand years! It is great from beginning to end. TCM today around 3 o'clock PDT. If the 49ers hadn't been losing we'd have missed it. And now the 49ers are ahead to boot! Edited September 28, 2014 by 3DOP 2

3DOP Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 One of my favorite movies! Heh. "Young people in love are seldom ever hungry!"
Stargazer Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 I probably should have gone to Guardians alone yesterday, my husband was not a happy camper, but he's not into most sci-fi movies. He's not into movies much anyway and he is a very active person, so sitting is difficult. I loved Groot (sp?) and the raccoon too. I've seen it twice so far, and I liked it even more the second time. I love looking for plot holes, but haven't found any so far, so I think the writing is very tight. I liked the racoon a lot, but Star Lord is the best. Great acting!
bluebell Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 That scared me as a kid, too! I read the book first, found it in a bookshelf at my grandparents' house during a family reunion. I had to stay up all night to finish it because I was too scared to go to sleep until I could finish it. That kid floating outside the window and Geoffrey Lewis in the rocking chair still give me chills! That rocking chair scene still freaks me out, and that scene in the graveyard when Lewis jumps down on the coffin and opens it up and then they cut away as he looks back up at the sky and the kid sits forward really fast....that is classic. Unfortunately, my 12 year old is just not meant for scary movies-he's too much like his dad--and thought it was mildly entertaining but a little corny. I was a little disappointed because i like to watch scary movies and it would be nice to have someone to watch them with. My nine year old would have been all over it but since i don't want him sleeping in bed with me for the next 6 months he's not an option yet. I only read the book last year and was a bit disappointed in it. It didn't seem that scary to me. If i remember right the Rob Lowe movie version is actually more accurate than the older version and follows the book better. It's too bad they relied so much on CG effects when they made it. It's hard to be scared of something that's so obviously not flesh and blood.
bluebell Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 Saw Godzilla this past weekend. It was not as horrible as i expected.
Stargazer Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 Saw Godzilla this past weekend. It was not as horrible as i expected. OK, so it wasn't as horrible as you expected. How horrible was it, then?
bluebell Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 OK, so it wasn't as horrible as you expected. How horrible was it, then? There wasn't enough plot for a large chunk of the movie so it got boring in spots (just a lot of destruction centered around lead characters it was hard to care much for) and the story was pretty loopy sometimes, but the beginning was good and overall it was semi entertaining.
thesometimesaint Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 Not really a "movie" per say, but a series of documentary films by Ken Burns "The Roosevelt's". Starting with Theodore "Teddy" through FDR and Eleanor Roosevelt.Very well done. It really gives you an understanding of who these people were in their personal and political lives. Two Thumbs Up.
saemo Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 "All Is Lost", starring Robert Redford. I liked it. Jermiah Johnson fought to survive in the mountains, ~40 years later, the Captain of the Virginia Jean fights to survive on the sea.
Rivers Posted October 4, 2014 Posted October 4, 2014 Saw Godzilla this past weekend. It was not as horrible as i expected.I still need to see that one. It understand it got some very mixed reception.
Deborah Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 Guilty pleasure admission. I saw the new Dracula movie with Luke Evans. I loved the movie and loved Luke. He also plays the Bard in the Hobbit. The movie had a surpirsing love of family and a moral compass.
Calm Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 (edited) Nitpick, Bard is his given name, not his profession (poet), so he is Bard the Bowman. (archer) so no "the Bard"... Edited October 12, 2014 by calmoriah
bluebell Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 Watched Brick Mansions last night. This was one of Paul Walker's last movies. I liked Walker-he was a good person and was very into serving people and making the world a better place. But he was not a very good actor and sadly, he was pretty much the best actor in the movie. He was definitely the only known actor in the movie. The plot is very basic and most of the movie is chase scenes and fight scenes but the dialogue and premise is not good for most of it. I won't give away the ending but it is SO cheesy and stupid, which at least meant that at the end it got kind of funny.
Deborah Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 Nitpick, Bard is his given name, not his profession (poet), so he is Bard the Bowman. (archer) so no "the Bard"... I realized that after I wrote it and thought no one would notice. LoL.
