Silhouette Posted October 16, 2014 Posted October 16, 2014 Watched "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban". I loved that whole series, but was sorry it turned so dark towards the end of the series. This week is "Harry Potter Week" on one of the tv channels we get.

It was really a shallow, disjointed, movie that had a really thin plot and not much in the way of action or explanation. It has been a long time since I watched a movie and walked away and thought, "that was a dumb movie". They had some good talent on hand too. One of the youth at church asked me my thoughts on the new TF movie, I said, "If you watched it in three minute chunks, you'd think it was the coolest movie of all time. It looks great, it's well shot (in the Michael Bay style), and completely vapid and devoid of plot. Put it together, and you have a middle-aged man actually speaking to the screen in the theater saying, no, don't do that! Really?!"

This week is "Harry Potter Week" on one of the tv channels we get.The HP movies did indeed go darker after #3, but I have to say, the later movies hold up much better to repeat viewings, and I loved the two parts of Deathly Hallows, even though Azkaban was my favorite of the book series.

Last night we watched Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. One of my favorite lines in Prisoner of Azkaban is when they're all in the Shrieking Shack. Snape is being his usual snarky self, and Lupin says, "Why don't you just run along and play with your chemistry set..."

He could say if the sailing was realistic. I can't remember the name. Something about being lost at sea which is what it was about. Almost zero dialogue. An old, too old probably, Robert Redford trying to survive alone on the ocean after the flukiest accident when his sailboat gets punctured by some floating freight container that you should never expect to bump into in a thousand years. I really liked that movie 3DOP... and I too thought of Rod and Patti... and of a couple from my ward who are getting ready to leave on a sail-around-the-world trip. I've told them about Rod and they have been in touch with him I believe. I hope. I wanted them to benefit from Rod's expertise. The name of the movie is "All is Lost." I hate to see Redford get old, but am thankful he is not afraid to do so and to play "older" parts... the other night I watched "The Way We Were" with Redford and Striesdand... when he was at his best... altersteve Posted October 18, 2014 Author Posted October 18, 2014 I watched Dracula Untold the other night. Decent story, some of the cinematography is magnificent, and Luke Evans does a fine job in the lead role, but I didn't like the characterization of Dracula, the plot is rushed at times, and Dominic Cooper is completely miscast as the villain. I'd give it a solid "okay" rating. Worth a matinee or rental.

Lead actors Ben Affleck and Rosamind Pike deserve Oscar nominations, as does director David Fincher, and all three probably will, but it's not a movie for the faint of heart. Themes of infidelity, revenge, the media and its impact on how we view and treat people, and other dark topics are woven throughout the story, which unfolds in a miraculously vivid and gripping fashion. Expect very frequent language, some nudity and sexuality, and one short but very intense, bloody scene involving a box cutter (I won't spoil anything, but be ready for a TON of blood -- again, it's brief, but extremely shocking). So yeah, this isn't a movie for everyone. It's very dark and at times disturbing, and some of the characters' actions will frustrate you, but that's the point. And the way the story unfolds is so well done. Also, prepare for a more character-driven plot than what you would find in most mystery films, which generally are focused on events and clues. This, along with the subject matter, make it a difficult movie to sit through at some points, but the three-hour run time goes by quickly. Just be prepared for an intense experience. This is one of my favorite movies... again I have to warn about the language... but somehow it all "fits" so well that it is realistic and surprisingly uplifting... in spite of the brutality of Shawshank, Andy never gives up "hope." And the narration by Morgan Freeman is wonderful... GG
Deborah Posted October 18, 2014 Posted October 18, 2014 I love Shawshank. I also read Stephen King's short story and the movie really is better than the book in this case. It is an uplifting story, even with the brutality which I skip over now. One of my favorite scenes is when he breaks into the office and plays the opera on the speakers. To see the reaction of those hardened men is so beautiful. I re-watched the two Captain America movies. I had seen Winter Soldier in the theaters but couldn't remember all the characters so I had to watch the first one again before watching the second one. Watching them both consecutively really makes the story whole. Captain America is my favorite super hero because he is such a good person to begin with. 2

The ending left you with nothing. I should have read your review before seeing the garbage. My MIL use to say our minds aren't garbage disposals. Well I guess my mind certainly could be described that way, I use to avoid R rated movies, maybe I should go back. But there are certainly good ones out there, just should have done a little more homework on this one. I was hoping for better from Ben Afleck.

I got scared off by hearing there is no speaking, and that it wasn't a good movie, can't remember where. Glad I went to Rotten Tomatoes and the ratings are great!

One of my favorite Redford movies is the one with Jane Fonda titled "Electric Cowboy" where she is a TV reporter covering a corporate story in Las Vegas and he is the aging rodeo star... the Corporation is using a 12 Million dollar horse in a promotion and "Sonny Steel" (Redford, who also works for the Corporation) is hired to ride the horse out on stage during a show... Redford decides the corp is mistreating the horse, drugging him, etc., so he decides to steal him and set the horse free among the wild horses in a Utah canyon area. The story follows Fonda's quest to find Sonny, the horse, and get Sonny's story... naturally in the course of things she falls under Sonny's spell as she accompanies him as he takes to horse from Nevada to Utah... a very entertaining film... touching... particularly the last scenes of the horse running free... beautiful photography.
