The source is a treasure trove for data nerds like me.

I wish we knew how this data gets reported.  I also wish we could break down the anti-lgbt crimes by type.   According to the top chart, the only 2023 category that grew to larger than prior years, would be "All other larceny".   It would be nice to know how much of the jump is larceny related, and how much is more serious stuff.

Larceny, vandalism, and intimidation aren't good things.  I'm against them, whether they're targeted against a specific class of people or not.  But hooray that they make up 60% of the crimes, because they're pretty dang minor.  That's "they tore down/stole my gay pride flag" stuff, and "they were shouting threats at me" stuff.   

(Full transparency: Even though minor, they are not good.  I am not attempting to dismiss or minimize them.  They are valid hate crimes.  I'm against them.  I would be willing to speak out against, even testify against, someone "on my side" if they engaged in such behavior.  I would be willing to go use my height and size and muscle and gender and white privileges to go stand between a potential LGBT victim and a potential aggressor.  I have done this on two prior occasions.  I wish more folks also felt the same way about the BLM riots and mayhem and vandalism and theft.)

Simple assault is a wide range.   One end is "I was shouting obscenities at them in public and they tried to grab my camera, but I backed up in time".  The other end is "they pushed me into the street and I fell down and got a concussion and almost got run over by a car".  

 

I don't really have any point in this post, other than I like data and continuously desire more data.   If you need a point, it would be something like "How ironic to hear someone who publicly advocates committing acts of violence against a group of people, calling foul on such things.  Gotta punch them nazis, right?"

It seems like lgbtq+ people are more accepted now than they've ever been though.  Even by groups that previously didn't accept them at all.

LGBT+ persecution explodes as the LDS persecution disappears... Weird. Why? Do we have data on the suspected parties responsible?

Is it LDS? LDS persecution exploded in 2017. Is this retaliation? Push back? Its somehow strangely effectively preventing LDS from being persecuted.

Are Non-LDS responsible? Is it another party, a Non-LDS group that used to target LDS and switched gears to attack LGBT+. Or are both LDS and Non-LDS doing it in a weird truce? Deznats?

My guess is that with increased acceptance comes increased resistance/fear/hate.  Their way of life and thinking is being threatened with all the acceptance messaging, and there will predictably be a counter-offensive. 

It's all the gay's fault, don't you know?  I have heard it before.

I doubt it’s nine months given most stats lag at least a few months,  better to just look at 2022 imo.  Stuff often doesn’t get reported right away if they are gathering state/nationwide.

Wasn’t there several incidents of arson and vandalism against chapels last year (or was it earlier)?  Maybe they caught the guy who did it.

With such small numbers over all, it only needs one person doing a couple of crimes to jump the rate way up and then cause numbers to appear to dramatically drop when they stop.

For the anti-Mormon acts, that are only 27 acts spread over 5 years for an average of 5 a year.  Even the largest appears to only be around 15, the smallest is 1.  One or two angry or bored teens could have been the reasons for that difference.

I'm sure you are right in that some people do push back more when they believe they are being forced into accepting something they don't like.  But "increased" above what it used to be before gays and lesbians and transgender people were greatly accepted and even celebrated in most of society and there were laws protecting some of their basic rights?

Any persecution is horrible and should never be tolerated.

Any persecution is horrible and should never be tolerated.  

I don't have data to prove this, but my instinct tells me that while there may not be more persecution overall, I think the severity of persecution has likely increased to reportable levels.   So, while there might be overall less bullying, there may be more reportable hate crimes.  That's my best guess.

There may be other reasons.  I have heard more about LGBT in the last year than in the first 40 years of my life.   We don't have a pride day.  We have a pride MONTH.  Just a constant drum beat so some people just may be getting sick of all of it.  I am not for people committing hate crimes but it is predictable that some people may just get fed up with it all over time.  So I am not shocked at all and mostly likely it will get worse in the years ahead.

I tend to think the article is somewhat irresponsible.

It refers to "reported", anyone can report, and that same person can claim they were targeted based on a protected status.

As for the Pride Flags, and Utah's victim targeting enhancement, was it done because it was pride flags, OR was it the person don't think any flag other than the US flag should be displayed - the first instance could be based on protected "class", the second situation is would not likely based on a protected "class"

 

Overall, it is unfortunate that interactions that other feel attacked because of a protected status

Also, I am perplexed at your reasoning here, as you seem to be decrying the use of violence / threats / intimidation as an expression of ideological disagreement/dislike, and you have spent years publicly advocating for the use of violence / threats / intimidation as an expression of ideological disagreement/dislike.  You "marginalized" people whom you dislike or have ideological disagreements by arbitrarily labeling them as "nazis" and/or "fascists," and then endorsing - even celebrating - the use of actual physical violence / threats / intimidation against anyone so arbitrarily labeled/marginalized.  An example:

I entirely agree with the unspoken premise of your post, namely, that violence or threats of violence as an expression of disagreement or dislike ought not be part of a civilized society.  I am just perplexed as to how you can hold that position while at the same time doing . . . what you do.  The Nazis were an actual "existential threat," hence the utility of folks like you using the label to silence / intimidate / marginalize people whom you dislike or with whom you disagree.  You have spent years doing this.  Years advocating for actual extralegal violence against people you dislike, and justifying that advocacy by claiming that the targets of your malice deserve it.

I would prefer to not dredge this stuff up over and over.  But I think sentiments such as yours need to be addressed in the public sphere.

I think this is a point worth discussing (though I'm not sure it is altogether correct).  One of my favorite blogs has an ongoing "meme"-like commentary along the lines of "The demand for racism in America vastly exceeds the supply."  This line is used to introduce stories about hoaxes and such where allegations of racism are made and subsequently determined to be false or unlikely.  Some examples:

The Police Department provided five photographs of trees, some of which showed knotted ropes and one that appeared to have a piece of plastic pipe attached to a rope, hanging from tree limbs.

They have been removed by city officials.

Victor Sengbe, who is black, told KGO-TV that the ropes were part of a rigging that he and his friends used as part of a larger swing system. He also shared video of the swing in use.

“Out of the dozen and hundreds and thousands of people that walked by, no one has thought that it looked anywhere close to a noose. Folks have used it for exercise. It was really a fun addition to the park that we tried to create,” Sengbe said.

ANALYSIS: TRUE. The demand for white supremacists vastly exceeds the supply.

IF IT WEREN’T FOR FAKE HATE CRIMES, HOW MANY HATE CRIMES WOULD THERE BE? Black college lacrosse player, 21, is arrested for spraying N-word and swastika graffiti targeting HIMSELF and other minority students in two incidents that terrorized the campus.

In the mid 1980's, I was pushed up against a wall and forced to recant my Mormon faith at knifepoint.   "I cut mormons.  Are you a mormon?"   That was a crappy day in a middle school in Holladay Utah, one of Salt Lake City's suburbs.  

Nobody had an understanding of "hate crimes" back then.  I recanted my faith, went about my day, and spent the next umpteen years bearing the emotional impacts of lying because I wasn't strong enough to stand up and tell the truth.  My chosen name on this forum is partially a signal to the world about how the next time something like that happens, they'll get something different out of me.

 

In subsequent decades, two different acquaintances have told me their stories of hate crimes.   One buddy had their gay pride flag set fire on the hood of their old beater truck.   A co-worker told of having a gay pride flag removed from their house one night.  

 

I don't really have any point to make here, other than it's important to talk about this stuff.
