Alam 14:11 - modern likening of the doctrines taught in this verse?

11 But Alma said unto him: The Spirit constraineth me that I must not stretch forth mine hand; for behold the Lord receiveth them up unto himself, in aglory; and he doth suffer that they may do this thing, or that the people may do this thing unto them, according to the hardness of their hearts, that the bjudgments which he shall exercise upon them in his wrath may be just; and the cblood of the dinnocent shall stand as a witness against them, yea, and cry mightily against them at the last day

I'm interested in asking each of you how you think the truths and doctrine of this verse might be likened to our lives today.

Innocent martyrs always stand as a witness, as do the innocent children of Bethlehem slaughtered by order of King Herod the Great, or the Christian Deacon Stephen who was stoned to death for blasphemy under the supervision of Saul (later becoming Paul the Apostle).

In this case, Alma 14:9 actually speaks of "martyrdom," and "glory"  -- as is the case for innocent Jesus, who was also "received up into glory" (I Tim 3:16).  Moreover, such acts do stand as a witness, as if speaking from the dust (Gen 4:10, 2 Ne 3:19-21, 2 Ne 26:16, 33:13).  This includes modern martyrdoms, such as those of Joseph & Hyrum, or of the massacre at Haun's Mill.

Let me guess: You've determined that the prophets have repeatedly urged us to follow basic public health measures not because those health measures are good and wise but because the prophets have been 'constrained by the Spirit' not to tell us the truth and save us from destruction -- so that the Lord can have just cause to punish our wicked leaders.

Am I close?

I think the point is that when the "Spirit constraineth," the righteous follow even it is counterintuitive or difficult to bear. The same thing happened with Nephi in being constrained to kill Laban. To liken this to me, when I am prompted by the Spirit to do or say something, I must act even if I initially feel awkward about it. Or, sometimes it is sometimes better to let things go and let God judge rather than seek revenge or justice for a very real offense in the spirit of contention.

Really any atrocity can be likened to this story

It's true, but I feel bad putting other posters on 'ignore'.

Any since then?

Of course.  LDS chapels get vandalized and burned all the time, and missionaries even die, but it does not seem to be an organized effort to destroy and kill.  That does not mean that the bad old days won't return.  It is only a matter of time.

Just an incidental point of information, but we now know from research conducted by Alex Baugh that the Hawn name in Hawn’s Mill is spelled with a w in the middle, not an h. Our scripture study aids have been updated accordingly.

What I see from this bit of history is God allowing people to do wicked things, which he could have stopped or helped others to stop, so that "the judgments which he (God) shall exercise upon them in his wrath may be just".

In other words, God allows people to do wicked things so that he (God) can judge them for those wicked things they do.  Whether the wickedness involves murdering other people, or telling lies about them, or distorting the truth about them... whatever.

The good who do what is right have nothing to fear, because they will be judged for doing what is right, but the wicked should be very afraid because they are doing nothing but getting themselves in trouble for doing wicked things.

He doth sufferer it so that the judgments may be just.

We shouldn't take this passage to be a blanket and universal admonition for non-intervention.  I think it is more a lesson in letting the Lord direct us in each specific scenario.  Different contexts may render different results.  For example, all throughout the Book of Mormon there are examples of the Lord strengthening the righteous against the wicked in intervening against the wicked who would do harm to the righteous.   There are many passages to that effect in the Bible and Book of Mormon.

That being said, are you selling something good? Heroin maybe? Anything that will numb the pain so I can get through one more day?

Any injury, insult or harm received because our faith in Christ will stand as a witness against the unbelievers in the last day. The Lord warned that in this life we would have tribulation but we must endure to the end. We read in Luke 6:27 "...But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you..." We are to endure ill-treatment even onto death if necessary. We must remember that many Christians in the world do not live in the West or in developed nations. Most do not have legal recourse or enjoy the civil liberties and protection of the West.

The Lord is patient with the wicked. But His justice will run its course in due time. "And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they heldAnd they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?"  Rev. 6:9-10   He WILL.
