Raingirl Posted March 12, 2020 Posted March 12, 2020 Just received an email that stake conference is cancelled this weekend due to our governor (Oregon) banning gatherings of 250+ people for the next four weeks. Although sacrament meeting does not fall under this restriction, our Stake President has decided to cancel it this weekend, while they wait further announcements. This is getting crazy. I found it - disturbing? - that when I was in the ER this weekend, there was no screening for Covid-19. No questions regarding cough, travel, etc. And I didn’t see any extra precautions being taken. I work at a state university. At least one university is moving to online classes. And that was before the ban on gatherings. I am curious to see what my university will do. I telecommute four days a week, and right now I’m kind of glad I don’t have a lot of public exposure. Especially with having MS. 3

Compare to South Korea where they literally have drive up testing. Here up until a few days ago you could only get tested by some agencies if you were symptomatic and could show that you were exposed. State and local government are stepping in more but they are also hampered by a lack of testing supplies. There is a political element currently invested in keeping reported infected numbers low right now and logically if there is minimal testing then numbers are underreported. The equivalent of a child closing their eyes hoping that if they cannot see something no one else can either and it will just go away. The United States also initially refused the use of the WHO test kits to make our own which could have been okay but the CDC, mostly through plain bad luck, did not have the best samples to build it off of and the early test kits were initially very unreliable with a lot of false positives. 4

That would free up my Saturdays, but I would prefer to spend them in temple service. 4

This morning the stake president sent out an email that they are still proceeding to hold our stake conference this weekend, and that this decision was approved by the Area Authority. They also stated in the email that the announcement from the church that stake gatherings would be cancelled has an effective date of March 16th, so that is why our stake conference hasn't been cancelled. Doesn't this seem somewhat irresponsible in light of all the cancellations happening? I'm just surprised and wondered if anyone else has something similar happening? I am in Colorado. My county has 3 cases.

My kid is also signed up to participate in a youth conference starting tomorrow evening, and I'm considering asking if they shouldn't be canceling that as well. We'll see here as there may be an announcement this afternoon that schools will be cancelled. If thats the case, I imagine we'll see more cancellation announcements from the church. 1

I'm thinking probably because it would make a much bigger impact on our lives to not attend our weekly Church meetings than it would to just miss a meeting that occurs only every 6 months. Can you envision it? When would it end? No Church meetings for how long? 6 months? Maybe a year? Going for that long without attending any Church meetings, other than with our own families, maybe also including some neighbors who live very close by. Maybe there are or will be some exceptions.

They will go through a screening/testing process but will be able to come home.

Regular church in Utah is now cancelled effective Monday March 16th. This is what I don't understand, if they see the need for this, why not effective immediately. Every day they can slow the spread of the virus the better. That is the whole point of these preemptive closures. So we get to meet together one last time as a ward, collectively, unless we are already sick then last Sunday was the last one, or whenever was the last time we attended our ward meeting. I hate saying goodbyes, too many tears and I get tongue tied, so I will probably just stay home this next Sunday, too. So the next time will be whenever we will have a ward meeting for everyone in the ward, collectively. God be with you til we meet again.
