Coronavirus and General Conference

Coronavirus and April General Conference

  1. 1. Given the fact that we don’t know what level of Coronavirus infection that exists in Utah and other places, should Conference proceed in April with only General Authorities and choirs in attendance?

    • Yes! No audience is needed to have a successful conference.

    • No!. Conference would not be the same without the membership in attendence at the conference center.

My mom told me I never had chicken pox. I went to the doctor to get the vaccine since I know the disease is harder on you as you get older. He wanted to first test to see If I ever had it, and low and behold I had. Must have been such a light case that my mom didn’t notice it or maybe there were no external pox. Anyway, it was interesting to find out that I was immune all along.

I got such a mild case of chicken pox that my mom took me on the plane (I am pretty sure she discovered afterwards, but I can see Dad saying plans are plans.).  My siblings caught it from me and had it bad.  I have one little scar above my eyebrow from it.

My son got it in chicken pox.  Only thing he got sick of as a kid.  Never had a cold as far as I could tell.  Did get nasty migraines as a 3 year old.  Barfed up, slept and all was well.  We figured it out was from him skipping meals and then going out in the sun.

Back to the pox.  For some reason it went down the front row in his kindergarten class, one after the other, no overlap as far as I remember them being out.  Took 5 kids out and then no more.

Thanks, I was thinking the last major measles outbreak was the year that I was born or the year before I was born, which would match, but then when I checked it was in 62 to 65 iirc.  But perhaps that last wasn't as massive.

It was a normal thing kids got. I had measles mumps and rubella, and am immune to smallpox, because I actually had cowpox, and probably rheumatic fever due to heart defects I have now.

Just my luck that they are not likely to come back and leave me nice and alone with a whole planet to myself. :)

If it's true that you get shingles when you had chicken pox as a child, now you have to worry about shingles 😞

Shingles vaccine is recommended for 60 and above and approved for over 50.  Chicken pox vaccine covers shingles as well,

And if you haven't had chicken pox, you can get that apparently from someone who has shingles though shingles are not contagious (you can't catch shingles, you catch the pox, that goes dormant and then resurfaces as shingles).

Oh it's true all right.

Nasty stuff. You wanna know what "hellfire" kinda probably feels like, get shingles.

Definitely a cure for anti- vaxxism.

And the vaccine doesn't always work.

Horrible stuff. Five of seven of my kids were vaccinated for chicken pox in America, but not the youngest, twins, as it was not the medical norm in France. And so, at about 5 years old, he woke up with croup early one morning and was treated with a steroid to improve his breathing. Little did we know, that not only did he have croup, he also was in the early non-presenting stages of chicken pox. And the steroid dose was enough to give the pox and extraordinarily strong presence. It was horrible for him! There were thousands of pock marks. He sat as still as he possibly could for the days that it was the worse!

It is supposed to lessen the symptoms if it doesn’t stop it completely

I dreaded getting shingles after seeing what my mom went through and mother in law. And then it happened to me, started out with pain on my back that was the most unusual pain. And then the sores.. and it was so mild that I got off easy. I attribute it being easy because of having used my cbd/thc oil and some other oils, rubbed them right on the sores. And I had waited to go see the doctor so I was too late to get the shot/pills (?) even.

Yes I had a light case too. It was enough to show me what a really nasty case might be like. No thanks.

Why do you attribute it to that?  Many people only have mild cases.

Similar to measles, it is so contagious that if you were born  before 1979 you are considered immune to the disease.  Also similar to measles, many people who think they never had the disease are surprised to find out otherwise.

The new Shingrix vaccine is 97% effective if you get it between 50-69 years old.  91% effective for those older.  That’s pretty dang good!

What you say is true but the old shingles vaccine was for 60 and older, while the new Shingrix vaccine is recommended for 50 and older.  It’s way more effective too.

This is something I hadn't heard about! Good news.

The down side is that the new vaccine can be a bugger for some. It is very common for my patients to report the vaccine “knocking them out” for a day or two with flu-like symptoms.  Soreness and swelling are more common too.  Doesn’t happen to everybody though, and it definitely beats getting the shingles!

If you have had the old vaccine, it would be worth getting the new one.

Good to know so that I can plan it on a day before easier and less busy days just in case.

I am 43, I had the chicken pox in kindergarten and I don't think I've had the shingles vaccine. My grandmother has had shingles and I've heard and read enough horror stories to be very excited that there're vaccines!

My wife asked me this today.  She thinks GC is going to be held in our homes as the conference center would be full of coronavirus.

It would be terrible if the virus spread to the general authorities because of conference - they are the most at risk.  If they all contracted it, we could potentially see upwards of 10% of our general authorities dying from it.  That is a sobering thought.  I think it should be canceled personally.  I think it will create more cases in Utah.

I know they are discouraging foreign traveler, but what about people from Washington, etc.  are they being given tickets?

If the General Authorities do not mingle or shake hands or anything their odds of catching it from the congregation are very low due to the distance. The greater danger is the congregation giving it to each other.

The choir probably has the biggest risk, belting out songs constantly (spit gotta fly). Would not want to be in front for once. ;)

Hmm. This got me to thinking. Elder Ballard visited our stake a few weeks ago.  At the end he told us that he would love to shake every person's hand, but he had to catch a plane. They asked everyone not to get up till he was gone.

So I just realized that works for the virus as well.

I expect this to be recommended soon. I am a little disappointed it has not gotten worse more quickly. I was really hoping the Clerk and Executive Secretary Training meeting I have tonight would end up cancelled. Stupid lazy virus and lack of test kits so we do not know how much we should panic yet...........

If this gal is correct I think the answer will be obvious.  Maybe, maybe if we start doing things now to limit exposure it won't be this widespread.  But at the very least this article is just super interesting (and a bit alarming).  You cannot compare this to the seasonal flu and it's disingenuous for people to keep doing so.

Perhaps more important is the disproportionate number of severe Covid-19 cases, many requiring hospitalization or weeks long ICU stays.

I hope everyone has at least one free article at the NYT because the interview with this doctor is very telling.  I think the thing that stands out the most to me is this nugget:

Quote

What were mild, severe and critical? We think of “mild” as like a minor cold.

No. “Mild” was a positive test, fever, cough — maybe even pneumonia, but not needing oxygen.

Severe” was breathing rate up and oxygen saturation down, so needing oxygen or a ventilator.

Critical” was respiratory failure or multi-organ failure.

So saying 80 percent of all cases are mild doesn’t mean what we thought.

I’m Canadian. This is the Wayne Gretzky of viruses — people didn’t think it was big enough or fast enough to have the impact it does.
