Scott Lloyd Posted February 25, 2020 Posted February 25, 2020 (edited) LDS Business College will be renamed Ensign College consistent with the discontinuance of nicknames and abbreviations related to the name of the Church. And in keeping with a conjecture I made here the other day, it will become involved with BYU Pathway International. In that conjecture, I thought it might be renamed BYU-Salt Lake City. That didn’t happen. But it will begin offering some four-year degrees. Don’t have time to link to the Deseret News article, but will later if no one else does first. Duncan Posted February 25, 2020 Posted February 25, 2020 Sounds like a Naval thing, pronounced differently but still 1
Scott Lloyd Posted February 25, 2020 Author Posted February 25, 2020 (edited) 2 hours ago, Duncan said: Sounds like a Naval thing, pronounced differently but still Those who are well acquainted with Church history will recognize it as alluding to Ensign Peak, a prominence not far from downtown Salt Lake City, which Brigham Young saw in vision before the Saints entered the Salt Lake Valley. The peak was named as an allusion to the scriptural “ensign to the nations” that would be raised in the latter days. I very much like the new name. It is already the name of the Church’s flagship magazine. And in addition to separate pronunciations, the naval term and the scriptural term have different meanings. smac97 Posted February 25, 2020 Posted February 25, 2020 My son is currently a student there. He enjoys it a lot. Trib article: https://www.sltrib.com/news/education/2020/02/25/lds-business-college-will/ From the article: "Starting with the fall 2021 semester, the school will offer a limited number of bachelor’s degrees in applied science. The degrees will be offered in three disciplines: business management, communications and information technology." Thanks, -Smac 2

Thanks, -Smac If they will be offering degrees in communications, the college might privide a proximate source of interns for KSL and the Deseret News, which operate out of the same office complex (Triad Center) as the college.
Damien the Leper Posted February 25, 2020 Posted February 25, 2020 I've never known anyone who went to that school. Ensign does sound appealing to me.
JAHS Posted February 25, 2020 Posted February 25, 2020 In case you can't access the Trib article LDS Business College changes its name to Ensign College, adds 4-year degrees The 131-year-old LDS Business College is changing its name — reflective of the Church’s ongoing commitment to use the correct, divinely-directed name of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints The Salt Lake City-based school will now be called Ensign College. This change is effective Sept. 1, 2020, in conjunction with the new school year. The school will also begin offering a limited number of bachelor degrees beginning fall 2021. These changes were announced Tuesday, Feb. 25, at a devotional for students and faculty at the Assembly Hall. In October 2018 general conference, President Russell M. Nelson spoke of the vital importance of using the correct name of the Church: “The name of the Church is not negotiable. When the Savior clearly states what the name of His Church should be, and even precedes His declaration with, ‘Thus shall my church be called,’ He is serious. And if we allow nicknames to be used and adopt or even sponsor those nicknames ourselves, He is offended.” The Church president went on to say that blessing await members who strive to correctly use the name of the Church: “My dear brothers and sisters, I promise you that if we will do our best to restore the correct name of the Lord’s Church, He whose Church this is will pour down His power and blessings upon the heads of the Latter-day Saints, the likes of which we have never seen. We will have the knowledge and power of God to help us take the blessings of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ to every nation, kindred, tongue and people and to prepare the world for the Second Coming of the Lord.” The two-year school, originally called the Salt Lake Academy, opened in 1886. This story will be updated with more information. 1

Boanerges Posted February 25, 2020 Posted February 25, 2020 Do I see a trend here? Liahona for the wifi network, now Ensign for the college. Will the next name change be New Era or Friend? 😉 2

LoudmouthMormon Posted February 26, 2020 Posted February 26, 2020 (edited) Two things: 1. Perhaps now the saints will be properly educated on how to pronounce ɛn saɪn. 2. Meanwhile, mormondialogue.org falls further into the abyss of inconsistency with the discontinuance of nicknames and abbreviations related to the name of the Church. I, for one, would like that emblazoned on a t-shirt in some witty way. Edited February 26, 2020 by LoudmouthMormon

There has been pronunciation guidance in the Ensign magazine for many years (not sure whether it’s still there), yet people persist in saying it improperly. One of my many pet peeves. This dictionary is deficient in not recognizing separate American pronunciations of the word. Edited February 29, 2020 by Scott Lloyd
