Avatar4321 Posted July 1, 2018 Posted July 1, 2018 It’s been bout three month since conference. What from the last conference have you found most useful? How has your ward been adapting to the changes? Good things? Bad things? 2
Prof Posted July 1, 2018 Posted July 1, 2018 Combining quorums went well. No hiccups at all, but for us, it was no big deal as the 2 quorums had been meeting together any way as we had a small Elders quorum. I think we are still trying to figure out the ministering thing. Mostly, the mechanism of it-expectations, reporting.... I think some of those details are still being worked out.
Prof Posted July 1, 2018 Posted July 1, 2018 I do think the announced changes are positive. I look forward to seeing what is announced at the next!!!!
strappinglad Posted July 2, 2018 Posted July 2, 2018 I am being pedantic but something just rubs me the wrong way when I hear the word ministering. Too much baggage from association with Minister, be that religious or political. I would have been happy with a simple emphasis change/reform rather than a name change . " Home Teacher" will stick with me for decades I'm sure. " Ministering Brethren " has too many syllables in it . 2
Calm Posted July 2, 2018 Posted July 2, 2018 I am thinking of just saying MS and MB like I did with VTs.
Hamba Tuhan Posted July 2, 2018 Posted July 2, 2018 We begin each elders quorum meeting with ministering reports. They just keep increasing in both quantity and quality. I'm excited to see where all this goes. One of our brothers who last week said that ministering was 'not his thing' put his hand up this week to take a missionary out on ministering visits. Good stuff. 3
strappinglad Posted July 2, 2018 Posted July 2, 2018 Let not the left hand know what the right hand is doing
Avatar4321 Posted July 2, 2018 Author Posted July 2, 2018 Has there been any of the talks that have been particularly useful?

It shouldn't. 2

Rain Posted July 2, 2018 Posted July 2, 2018 (edited) Except for sort of sitting in a circle on fast Sundays I have noticed no changes. EQ did get combined with HP, but since I am not in there then I don't see what is going on. The council in RS was like any other lesson taught. Edited July 2, 2018 by Rain

We sit in a big circle, but it’s still mostly one man talking and everyone else listening. Our home tea...oooppps...minister insists on a personal visit every month, which is fine with me. I’m still not sure how it’s supposed to be different. A very interesting read about ward teachers/home teachers/ministers. Something to think about. https://www.lds.org/general-conference/1972/10/home-teachers-watchmen-over-the-church?lang=eng Edited July 2, 2018 by Bernard Gui 1
Sine Saw Square Posted July 2, 2018 Posted July 2, 2018 Before the unification EQ sat in a large circle in the gym. Now the group is too large and another ward has claimed use of the gym for their meeting. We now sit spread throughout in the chapel. Seemed the discussion was easier to facilitate before. It's difficult to make 50+ men participate in a room designed for sermons. The new EQ president (prev a HP) is a great guy and very effective leader. Easy to talk to and considers everyone's input. 1

My Aunt tells me that her friend lives in a ward in Pleasant Grove, UT which is trying out the two hour block, as advised by the church. I know that there have been many rumors about this in the past...let this be one more rumor. Edited July 2, 2018 by pogi

The combined group has to meet in the chapel, and the teacher won't use the mic so it's hard to hear him for most people. There is almost no discussion. I used to really enjoy the third hour but now it's like torture. 1

Meeting for 2 hours instead of 3? Combining meetings?... Can anyone fill me in on this?

Officially, from our leaders, we are to be known as ministers now, at least when we're ministering. And I've always liked the idea of becoming a minister, like both my Dad and Granddad who were ministers in their church. The ones who were doing the regular preaching on Sundays and Wednesday nights. I was usually referred to as the preacher's son, though. Seemed like most people in that church liked to call their ministers preachers, rather than calling their preachers ministers, except for the nameplate on their desk in their offices that referred to them as Minister -- followed by their name. This was all in a church called the church of Christ, too. The one they thought, and may still think, is it. 1

Avatar4321 Posted July 6, 2018 Author Posted July 6, 2018 I suspect that if they were going to announce the two hour block, we wouldn't be getting curriculum for next year's Sunday school classes
