Anyone else and all hell breaks loose and condemnations pour down on the Church. Thank God is was women who spoke because only they are touched and led by the Spirit...undoubtedly. Tacenda Posted March 29, 2016 Posted March 29, 2016 Last Christmas, I was a little sad that our ward or stake hadn't decorated with the usual Christmas flowers or poinsettia plants. I wonder if anything was done for Easter, I sadly was a no show. I wished I'd gone, and at least seen how our ward celebrated. Did any of your wards decorate at all. I know in the past some wards decorate with Lilies etc.

Hello Rory, I think it is worth letting this one go and ignore the situation. It is not helpful to you or anyone else. I am quite fond of your contributions on this Board and have always enjoyed them. It is my prayer and hope that your Easter celebration was a spiritual feast for you and your family. There are so many different things that we can each learn from other faith traditions and cultures. I always appreciated the concept of the Holy Season of Lent prior to Easter as celebrated by Catholics (Eastern and Western traditions). This is something I would like to see our church expand or grow into. When there are such ample number of negative examples in the world, we should do as Brigham Young encouraged us - to seek out all truth and claim it as our own. Culture and celebrations are not the equal of truth, but we can still learn a great deal from them. May his Spirit abide with you always, Michael

flameburns623 Posted March 29, 2016 Posted March 29, 2016 The Doughboy "He is risen" image is innocuous enough that even most Christians of any sort would have enjoyed the joke. It is likely true that even Christ Himself is comfortable enough in His own, risen, glorified Body to have cracked a tiny smile. Some of the subsequent stuff, if it isn't simple friendly banter, is kind of spoiling the fun for the rest of us. 1
Rain Posted March 29, 2016 Posted March 29, 2016 7 minutes ago, Scott Lloyd said: Rain's clarification makes more sense to me. Apparently the third "stake conference" is in reality a multi-stake or a regional conference. Such mulit-stake events have been held in the past, though my memory is that they were held in lieu of regularly scheduled stake conferences. OK. I have to correct myself yet again. Ugh. Something just wasn't sitting right so I called one of my friends in the ward. Both stake conferences were for our stake only. We still have a third one later in the year. The first one was the less advanced planned one and a seventy came to it. The second conference had been our calendar for some time and I don't remember anyone outside the normal visitors coming for it. The week or so surrounding the first stake conference had a fireside for seniors and their parents by Elder Anderson, some morning meeting with the young single adults and Elder Bednar, a conference with missionaries with one of the apostles. A few other things which I don't have details on. Then another fireside. and the thing that had me confused was there was a third (multi stake) fireside with I think Elder Bednar, but don't hold me to it being him. So there was a minimum of 3 firesides I could have attended with my senior daughter in 1 week. And 3 stake conferences in one year. 1

A sense of reverence is at least as much to be valued as a sense of humor. The ideal, of course, is to avoid excess -- which means finding and honoring boundaries. And in this arena, it strikes me that the stakes are especially high. The sentence that rings in my mind is, "God will not be mocked." Edited March 29, 2016 by Scott Lloyd 4

Meadowchik Posted March 29, 2016 Posted March 29, 2016 I don't recall an Easter talk although the Bishop did wish us all a good Easter Sunday. Two missionaries said farewell before their anticipated transfers. My daughter have a talk on prophets and a new member have a talk which seemed quite good although I have trouble singling out the theme sometimes between translations, accents, and my wiggling twins.

In your ward or throughout the Church? If it's the latter, I don't see how you would have any way of knowing that with certainty. The preponderance of evidence in this thread, anecdotal though it is, would suggest the "common occurrence" is for Easter to be observed in LDS congregations on Easter Sunday.

A fair amount of less active members and non-member spouses attend our ward's Easter sacrament meetings. I would have been mortified beyond measure sitting there in the congregation if the resurrected Christ was not the central focus of our service.

I've heard many stories from this past Sunday of people disappointed in the lack of Easter focus. I've heard of talks about keeping the Sabbath day holy. I heard one friend share about talks on tithing. It would be foolish to think this thread represents the entire church. I merely shared my experience and things I've heard from friends in the past couple of days. That also doesn't represent the entire church. What is irritating is people who act like it is unfathomable that many wards across the church had little to no Easter focus. It would be equally foolish to say that no ward had an easter focus. Our experiences are all limited and it seems safest to me to accept that there are many wards in which Easter was a focus while simultaneously accepting that there are many wards in which Easter was NOT a focus. BTW- "A common occurrence" does not mean "THE" singular experience of the entire church. There can be multiple "common occurrences." Edited March 29, 2016 by HappyJackWagon 4

This makes me want to attend several LDS Easter services next year and see if it's just my ward, of course this year they may have done marvelously, I wasn't in attendance. Next year I should go to the three usual times in most stakes in Utah, 9, 11, and 1 time slots. Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised. What I really think is needed, is more Sunday School classes on His life. There are so many details being left out when our course of study has to be spread out to include much more than just study of Him.
