Elder Renlund gives promises of blessings if you do temple work

Sorry if this has been a topic already, but I felt it's important. http://ldsmag.com/apostolic-challenge-issued-at-rootstech/ From the article: "

Elder Renlund further beefed up the challenge and issued it to all, “Prepare as many names for the temple as ordinances you perform in the temple and teach others to do the same.”

If you do this, he said, blessings will flow to your family. You’ll find not only protection from the temptation and ills of this world but also power to change, power to repent, power to be sanctified, power to learn, power to bind your family together and heal that which needs healing.

Elder Renlund spoke at a California Regional conference today, anybody have notes?

To me, it was a landmark talk.  I did not take notes because I was absorbing it.  That talk has to be made available to everyone

The basic suggestion is to always give context to gospel discussions with nonmembers, to start with a very brief statement of the restoration story, and then an explanation of the belief in question.

But there was so much more. I wish I had recorded it.  I hope it will be available.   Absolute great broadcast.

Elder Hamula said something about the expectation that early prophets be perfect.  What is your recollection of that? (I couldn't attend the broadcast :()

My daughter said that Elder Renlund talked about there being no conflict between loving the church and loving your child's gay family. Or something.

I too hope there will be transcripts because the conference was one of the best, particularly the last two talks... one by a Seventy (can't remember his name) and Renlund...

I love Elder Renlund and would mow the grass on the moon for him. Here's my sitch though with these promises. My dad's side of the family is a knightmayor when it comes to family history. We have had friends and others try to help but we all end up with zilch. We can't make head or tails of his history. It's made worse because it's all in German and we don't speak or understand the language. My Dad isn't interested beyond what he has told us and so we are left wondering that there needs to be some breakthrough at some point. Par example, we can't independantly verify my dad's family even existed at the time and place he said they did and he isn't lying to us. It's monumentally frustrating

What is more I hear all kinds of stories about people having visions and finding stuff and miracles coming out of their ears but like why can't we have a vision????? What are these people doing in heaven that they can't appear to us? are they too busy?

I have a non member dad so I've had the gold mine of temple work. It's been great and I still have so many names to do. It's just me and my brother on my entire dad's history who were mormen and my brother doesn't like going to the temple, so all the names have fallen on me to do. My mom only participates in endowment sessions. I find endowed girls from my singles ward to help with my female ancestors temple work. I love these temple opportunities.

Maybe one way to look at this is to do extraction. While it won't specifically work on your family then it opens up records and everyone together may end up with records for your family. I think the blessings talked about would still apply.

It was a very good conference. We are not allowed to record regional talks so I doubt any of the stakes would have a copy.

C Scott Grow,Bonnie Oscarson and James Hamula spoke as well. Elder Hamula mentioned keeping your eyes fixed on the lord, relying in the power of the Lord's deliverance, and standing with the church and its leaders. Elder Grow mentioned prayer, scripture study and church attendance. Oscarson spoke about living your life so that your discipleship is obvious to all observers.

Elder Hamula's list seemed simple enough, but it was quire insightful. This, to me, is the message of Lehi's dream. Grabbing onto the rod by being fixed on the lord and trusting that it will lead you to the tree of life and of course, trusting the leaders (Lehi) who will carry you there.

I liked the comment by Renlund that certain principles have been set in place to bring us to salvation, and that a marriage (or any other practice) that does not comply with Gods plan is a plan stopper.

Elder Hamula also made a comment about those who have trouble with Church history based on the actions of Church leaders.  He tried to distinguish between the actions of leaders, and the doctrines they teach, referencing this quote from Joseph Smith:

“When did I ever teach anything wrong from this stand? When was I ever confounded? I want to triumph in Israel before I depart hence and am no more seen. I never told you I was perfect; but there is no error in the revelations which I have taught. Must I, then, be thrown away as a thing of naught?”

While that's good in theory, it doesn't work for those who have severe issues with doctrines that Joseph Smith taught, such as D&C 132, the doctrines based on The Book of Abraham (doubting its origin), and so on.

Both are right.

Elder Hamula said that prophets are men and not perfect- that no one is perfect while mortal.  He discussed Joseph and mentioned that Joseph was not perfect nor other "early prophets". This was a great talk

The prophets to whom he was referring were early restoration prophets

Quite honestly because he was stating what I have always believed, I felt no need to take notes.  I did think of this forum and thought it would be great to use his comments on threads which asserted the infallibility of prophets etc, but thought that the comments would not be available afterwards to be quoted.

The prophets to whom he was referring were early restoration prophets

And yes, Elder Renlund in speaking about loving all he included loving a childs gay family.   He said essentially that in all cases of perceived conflict with those with beliefs other than ours, that we be loving, and essentially "agree to disagree" on religion and continue in being friendly and loving.  He gave several personal examples of times in which he was called upon to. for example, drink socially or do other things which would violate his principles.  He recommended that we always stick to our principles, decline in such a situation but then suggest another way to show love and acceptance to others.  So for example, if invited for a few drinks, perhaps explain why one does not believe in drinking alcohol- a short description of the restoration and describing Joseph as a prophet- and then going out and drinking non-alcoholic drinks.   The idea was to stick to your principles, explain the context of one's beliefs without debating whether or not, for example, whether red wine is "good for you", but simply stating your beliefs and leave it at that.

There were many other good points again, which parallel what I have always maintained the church teaches, but was busy basking in the spirit under the impression that notes would not do any good to convince others who have their minds made up on the negative side.

In fact the idea of maintaining a loving attitude and letting others believe what they believe even if obviously mistaken kind of made me less likely to argue with the critics hereabouts.

There is a rift growing between the church and the world.  I am beginning to worry less and less about that-  their path leads to destruction.   I wish I could stop it, but I can't.  I think I need to cut the rope ;)

Elder Renlund gave very specific counsel on how we deal with those who don't follow our standards.

To paraphrase from memory...

Do we neglect a child who lives in a same sex relationship? Of course not.

Do we shun a friend who lives out of wedlock and yell at them for not keeping our standards?  No.

What do I do when my wife and I are hosting a guest and we know they usually drink alcohol?  We go to a restaurant where they can enjoy the things they usually enjoy.  Do we make a big deal out of it?  No.

Or we can merely serve a mixed alcoholic drink to our non member friends from our home wet bar...like Mitt Romney does

Yep.  The idea was that we do not stand up and act sanctimoniously about our standards- simply state what we believe, and go ahead and love people.

Elder grow talked about scripture study and his advice was close to the advice that was talk about in another topic about studying the scriptures wrong.

he talked about reading from the Book of Mormon index so we could learn the doctrines.

and also about not just reading them from front to back.

Anyone that saw the broad cast catch the same thing.

It was really fantastic. I wish I had taken some notes. Elder Hamula spoke about the counsel to "be not afraid" while the world gets more tumultuous. Elder Renlund talked a lot about getting along with those with who we may not agree. Love his wife's method of "I disagree with you; I like you; I respect your reasoned opinion; I hope you can respect mine and we can set our differences aside" in the course of her work as a plaintiff's attorney and its application to moral disagreements.

Was he the one who spoke about seeing others through a parent's eyes at GC? I just really really like him. I think he's going to contribute so much toward building better "Zion" attitudes in the church.

Sounds like a great talk. Wish I could have heard it.

Our stake has a region conference set for later this year. Maybe I'll hear it then. Was it given live or played from a pre-recording?

Because of his Swedish background, I have sort of adopted Elder Renlund as our family's patron saint among the apostles. (And his wife, while she was still working downtown as an attorney, was on our Deseret News board of directors for a little while and met with us in our Church News staff meetings peridocially.)

I should explain that I have Swedish ancestry, that I served my mission in Sweden, and that our eldest son is serving there now.

In fact, had I not delayed my departure on my mission by nearly a year, Elder Renlund and I might have known each other in Sweden and perhaps even been companions.
