Bill Reel: The New John Dehlin?

Well, I've noticed one of the ways to spot an anti-Mormon is if he denies that there is any such thing as an anti-Mormon (see my sig line, the part in green type).

Oh, they exist, but some people are awfully quick to label some people as anti-Mormon.

Actually I have had an apostle say early on that I was doing a great work.  What he would think today.... who knows.  And yes I have had numerous stake presidents, Bishops, and even 1 mission president say They enjoyed the podcast and felt I was doing a good work.  I have not had anyone said they have left because of what I say though 2-3 people have said I am too negative for their taste.

Bill that is fine if you need their support.  I have known a couple of EQ presidents,  A couple of Bishops, a Stake President counselor that I can think of off the top of my head that have apostatized.  So the authorities list is not that impressive.

Maybe he could state that he is pioneer stock too.

17 yr old convert and Bishop at 29... now I am 36 and teaching 12/13 year olds the gospel.  No pioneer stock

Didn't say she did.

That chip on your shoulder is situated there ever more precariously.

More implying ill-intent.  Lovely.

"Mr. Williams, have you now or have you ever been a member of the anti Mormon party?"

I was only answering Bob Crocketts claim.  Not throwing it out for no reason

And anti-Mormons don't have to agree with each other to be anti-Mormons.

Nope, it appears to become an anti-mormon all the only requirement is to post something or say something that the "Anti-mormon labeling Task Force" disagrees with.

POV.  I have never heard an anti-Mormon who admitted to being one.

Never met Ed Decker, did ya?

Depends on whom you ask. If people want to label me anti-Mormon, there's nothing I can say about it. I don't think I am, but apparently saying that means I am. Can't win.

I don't know nor do I really care whether you are anti-Mormon or not.  I do know enough to know that I am leery of accepting your judgement about the LDS Church.

Nope, but I have met a lot of critics.

Having served my mission in TN and KY, as well as grown up around the immediate influence of the "Concerned Christians", I feel pretty confident saying I've encountered more than one truly "Anti-Mormon" type in my life.  What do I mean with that term?  Primarily motivated by hate.  Willing to lie to achieve the destruction of the Church, one member at a time.  Picketing outside temples, conferences, etc.  Those are the types of things I have in mind.

Someone who is a member, trying to go to church, hold a calling, etc. but can't reconcile the Sunday School narrative with the one available through some light reading on FAIR's website?  Not so much.

My answer is still the same.  Nope, but I have met a lot of critics.

Hmmm. Seems to me you should accept your judgment, not someone else's

That's what I am saying.

The only requirement is to be opposed to Mormonism.

It's really not all that difficult to define.

Touche!!

I know Bill brings issues up but if he didn't discuss them, many would just fall away or make a line in the sand with the church. But as it is, Bill helps members stay. I know that's akin to John Dehlin's beginnings but I hope or believe Bill Reel won't go that far. I believe for now he still has a testimony seed. But as the church has always encouraged, you need to nurture it. Bill can do many good things but he can also go the way John has. As long as he keeps a good faith promoting balance. I wonder if the church will open up to members like many of Bill's audience such as myself or will it buckle down with so many leaving.

I suppose it depends on whether the church wants to keep Bill's audience in the church.

Illustrative, but not comprehensive.

An anti-Mormon is one who is opposed to Mormonism.

Someone who is a member, trying to go to church, hold a calling, etc. but can't reconcile the Sunday School narrative with the one available through some light reading on FAIR's website?  Not so much.

That depends on the person's behavior. One can become a proselytizer for the other side, while holding nominal membership and going through the motions, especially in this day and age when it is so easy to write things anonymously on the Internet.

By the way, I've taught Sunday School gospel doctrine for many years. I've been a stake Sunday School president.  I've attended Sunday School throughout my adult life. I consult the FairMormon website frequently, and I attend the annual conference each year. I have contributed to FairMormon in the past.

I don't know of any "Sunday School narrative" (whatever that is) that is authoritative that cannot be reconciled with "some light reading on FAIR's website."

I didn't say it couldn't be reconciled.  I said some people have difficulty doing so.  Being able to recognize when someone is struggling through that process is an exercise in empathy.
