Today my heart and soul is troubled.  The refugee crisis in the middle east and in Europe is weighing on me.  I want to do SOMETHING to help. There are many choices at least to give money to.  I have often donated to LDS Humanitarian efforts.  Does anyone know if the Church is using these resources to help this specific need? There are other seemingly good groups to put $$ to.

In addition to that I feel moved to try to give something more than just $$. Not sure what.....?

Please see Bluebell's post #7 in this thread.  From the linked article in her post:

"With tens of thousands of ill-prepared refugees fleeing war-torn Syria in search of peace and protection across the border in Jordan, LDS Charities has answered the Jordanian government's call for help with more than $1 million in humanitarian aid already provided or in the works during the next few months."

Smac97 shared this in its own thread... to discuss it please go to that thread:  http://www.mormondialogue.org/topic/66138-lds-church-releases-statement-in-uk-re-refugee-issue/?p=1209542338

But for the sake of cataloging Church charitable service and opportunities I thought I'd link to it here as well.  This is a 28-Sept-2015 update on the Church's efforts to aid refugees.

The First Presidency has issued a letter encouraging members of the Church to assist refugees.

“It is with great concern and compassion that we observe the plight of the millions of people around the world who have fled their homes seeking relief from civil conflict and other hardships,” states the letter.

The letter explains the Church is assisting migrants and refugees in several countries “thanks to the generous help of our members.”

Mormons have been providing aid to refugees in the Middle East for more than a decade, providing hundreds of thousands of blankets, clothes, emergency medical supplies, food and other resources to refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey and Syria.

In response to the recent crisis in Europe, the Church made an additional commitment in September of $5 million to help displaced families.

The letter continues, “Members may contribute to the Church Humanitarian Fund using the Tithing and Other Offerings donation slip. We also invite Church units, families, and individuals to participate in local relief projects, where practical.”

“May the Lord bless you as you render Christlike service to those in need,” the letter concludes.

A Fredericksburg, Virginia Stake just completed a food drive.  Here's a quote from the director of the local food bank:

“We received a grand total of 25,085 pounds. That equates to 20,905 meals back to the community,” Klein said. “Thank you to everyone. These [food items] are going to families that they may never meet, they may never know about, but there’s somebody out there that is very appreciative and thankful that they are not hungry tonight.”

I read a KSL article monday I think that said the church last week donated $5 million to refugee efforts in the middle east.   There have been service missionaries in the Jordan refugee camps for at least ten years.

Yep, it was great to hear about that $5m donation.

If you happen to come across an article that discusses the services missionaries in Jordan refugee camps, please post it here.

I found this but not specific to the camps:

“We’ve been working in the Middle East for 10 years,” Eubank said, “so we already had volunteer couples on the ground there who had established relationships and infrastructure through their work on our wheelchair project, our neonatal resuscitation project and the other humanitarian efforts we are making in the area.”

Just went to a Just Serve meeting. The pilot program worked so well in Dallas, Denver, San Diego, Boise and Phoenix that it is now making it's way east across the US!

I also learned some other cool things in the works that I hope to share in the next few months that are connected with Just Serve.

My stake made these kits last Saturday and was packed with women of all ages helping sew them.  What a great cause, love that my stake did this, too bad I wasn't able to make it.  But judging by the parking lot, they had enough hopefully!!  The link below shows another church making these.  This is a great service project if anyone's interested!

http://sewinpeace.blogspot.com/2013/08/feminine-cloth-pad-tutorial.html

"This simple kit will not only improve her health, but will also provide her the dignity to remain in school 45 more days per year where she can continue to learn. A quality education is one of the few hopes these girls have to rise above extreme poverty. In our world of modern conveniences it is hard to believe a few scraps of cloth could make a difference to someone else, yet the reality is these pads are life changing to the girls who receive them."

Teancum,

My wife and I are wrapping up a 2 year service mission (employment services) here in Richmond, VA. I recently started helping with an organization here (ReEstablish Richmond) that helps getting refugees settled in, assisting with the various needs one would expect require attention in a new land. Specifically I offered my services helping with resumes, LinkedIn profiles, and other employment related issues. Presently working with a young Afghan lady. When the anti-Muslim rhetoric ramped up, I got ticked off and then, more appropriately, got involved. Maybe you could find a similar opportunity where you live. I simply did a Google search to find this organization.

My brother and sister-in-law were also heavily involved in this effort in Madagascar where they served a humanitarian mission.  The experience has changed them.  They were already some of the best people I have ever known, but there is a new depth of spirituality in them now that was not there before.

Popping this up so it doesn't get locked by accident.  If we didn't have four pins already, I request that.
