Why Lds Nde Claims Should Be Questioned

Here we go again.   No.  All I'm saying is that people's first impulse should be skepticism, not belief.

What's wrong with that?

I need to know.

Cause here we go...

AGAIN!!!!!!!

I know that is what you meant. That is what my analogy said.

Maybe it is the thread title and your past posting history.  I have to agree this post except I would say all such reports.  However, having examined this topic long ago I did find some to be credible.

I would say that the claims I have made in my past posting history have been reasonable even if you guys don't like the fact that I have had a tendency to contend in response to what people have done and said.  So I would say that my past posting history, even if you don't like it, is not a good thing to judge this thread by, if all you are judging on is that I contend sometimes.  I stand by all the claims I have ever made, and assert that they are all in fact very reasonable, with the exception of everything that I have retracted.  And my participation in contention, of course, is something that I am not proud of.

To be fair, people usually only believe in NDE's when the NDE reinforces their religious views. I'm sure LDS would be very skeptical of an NDE that claimed a trinitarian God, for example.

When I met Zeus last time I almost died I admit I was skeptical of the whole thing.

I do not have a position on NDE, perhaps they are visions and the spirit does not truly leave the body.

James 2:26 For as the body without the spirit is dead

See 2:30, I don't think all of them report a NDE

Maybe we should have you turn back in to that fluffy bear you can be when you want to be.

Sigh, right back atcha.  It is so interesting how these threads on this site devolve in to things focusing on me, rather than my point.  Funny how that seems to happen so often.

If someone isn't interested in discussion an issue with you then just ignore them.  You don't have to respond to every post.  :good:

It is impossible to prove or disprove an NDE because they are personal experiences that can not be duplicated and nobody brings back any pictures to prove it.  Who are we to say they are not real because we have not had one.   It sort of is on the same lines of what is said in the JST of Psalms 14:1

"The fool hath said in his heart, There is no man that hath seen God. Because he showeth himself not unto us, therefore there is no God. Behold, they are corrupt; they have done abominable works, and none of them doeth good."

I do believe however that if one does experience one, they should be seen as sacred and should be shared with only certain people. Most people will reject it anyway so there is no reason to tell them about it.

I think it's great that a boy whose last name is Malarkey has admitted to having created and perpetuated a lie. :)

Sounds like the family was annoyed that they were not getting the money they want from the publisher. I want to believe that the story is true and they are recanting out of vengeance to cut sales. That would be hilarious.

Sadly I suspect this is more a case of them deserving each other.

I don't really have anything to say when the op is nothing but links without even an effort to explain why they are relevant.

I think OP just saw it online and thought it would be fun to comment.....kind of like someone taking out their garbage deciding to hold a garage sale and just start putting price tags on their garbage. I suspect that is why there is only a one letter difference between the two words.

I am glad I am not the only one who noticed that.

For those who think some NDE's might be legit, can you do me a favor and apply your methodology to this woman's claims and let me know what the verdict is? And describe how you arrived at your determination?

I'm thinking that the only difference between malarkey and Malarkey is the em-PHA-sis is put on a different syl-LA-ble.

Sure.

In the digital age if you have supernatural experiences you can share them with the world with little financial cost. If you are charging more then bandwidth costs you are doing it wrong. If you have vital truths necessary to survive the last days and know what is to come in detail and sell that information to make money you are a moral monster who would have sold life rafts on the Titanic.

I would be glad to do it but my budget at this time hasn't any room for more books.

I didn't say they were all false.  I am saying that stuff like this is good reason to assume that they are likely to be false unless there is good reason to the contrary and that there is no good reason to assume that they are in fact true by default.

Carl Sagan once said, "extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence".  I believe the phrase applies to NDEs.

I'm fine with reading and being curious about NDE's. A couple of rules of thumb I use:

  • Avoid any account that is used for fiscal profit
  • Never look to an NDE to inform, expand, add to doctrinal understanding*
  • Be respectful ... do not openly disparage or doubt an account to the individual**

Following these rules I've gleaned a few interesting tidbit I suspect are true about reality. But no doctrinal perspective has been consciously modified.

* While it is possible and frequently the case that an NDE can teach and help an individual, it is for that individual alone. God has not and does not use NDE's as a mechanism to reveal truths to humanity at large.

** An actual NDE can be a very powerful experience and as with other strong emotional events, being doubted by others can be very painful. As such, many, if not most, "true" NDE's are actually accounts from the most reluctant of story tellers.

Some vindication of my rules.

The 'Boy Who Came Back from Heaven' Retracts Story

Now, admittedly I did not read the book nor would I have (though the boy personally did not fiscally profit from the book). It's also possible that some thing did happen but that adjustments were made to align with preconceptions but that the boy would rather recant everything than confess things that may not line up with his Protestant worldview. Also possible everything is fraudulent. Whatever the case, I'm not going to try to piece through the mess ... there is better stuff.

I read it and decided that for me there were to many discrepancies between it and what I believe.
