Did I Accidentally Slip Into A Different Universe?

Two things have recently come to my attention and made me wonder if something quite odd has happened.

The first of these is blood pressure.

As long as I can remember having seen how blood pressure measurements are expressed, it was the small number over the larger number.  The first time I remember seeing this was when a TV series called Emergency! was on the air, back in the mid-70's. The two paramedics in the show would frequently radio in to Rampart Hospital the blood pressure of their then current subject.  I recall that the way they would express this was the small number "over" the larger number, or, in other words, diastolic over systolic.  This continued to be the way I always heard it expressed from a physician or nurse, until sometime during December 2012, when my wife was visiting the doctor.  I looked up at the blood pressure monitor on the wall (she was hooked up to it), and was startled to see her blood pressure expressed opposite from what I was used to.  "That's odd," I thought, and the next time the nurse came in, I asked her about it.

She looked at me with a puzzled expression.  "That's the way it has always been," she said.  Not quite sure what to make of it, I then attempted to verify this with a few other medical types over the course of the next few days (while the wife was hospitalized).  EVERYONE confirmed that it was systolic over diastolic.

Now, I am not crazy, and while I can be forgetful, there is no way that forty-some years I always heard this wrong.  I don't recall the last time I heard it expressed diastolic over systolic, but I definitely recall the first time for its opposite.

For the past year and a half I have been wondering what happened.  Did I perhaps get accidentally shifted into a parallel universe where things were almost the same, but not quite?  Trouble is, this blood pressure thing was the only discrepancy I've been able to identify.  And to this point it just didn't seem conclusive enough.

But today, I found something else.

I knew that I had once registered an account on DrShades board -- you know, the Board that Should Not Be Named? Or linked to?  The Trailer Park?  For some reason I thought I would go back and have a look at the place, and see what was shaking.  Actually, I was trying to find a way to contact John K. Williams, known as jkwilliams here and runtu over there.  So I went over and logged in.

It turns out that I had posted exactly one time over there.  And this happened 6 years ago.  So I went and had a look at my post, which was in the Off Topic section, in response to a discussion about mathematics, believe it or not.  And this is what I had posted:

Hello everyone; I'm new here so will do my best in learning to navigate my way around this forum. The subject of mathematics and numbers is as a good a place to start as any. Our observable universe seems to be made up of multiples of items, rather than singles of anything. One could argue that the universe itself is a single entity, however that view could possibly be denounced in the future. It seems that if there is more than a single of anything, we must label that with a number. Otherwise even the number one would be ambigious and would have no use, unless you consider it in conjuction with zero as the present binary computer system employs.

It's all about labels. The cerebral mathematical contstructs that we apply labels to in the patterns and motions that we observe would undoubtedly still exist, even if the intelligence of humans had not evolved to recognize them. Numbers, are indeed, mental constructs and are no more significant, in themselves, basically than calling something "green" or "grass".

Many have pondered, including myself, what form our mathetical system (presently base 10) would be like if we humans (mammals and others) had evolved with 12 fingers and toes. Would 100% now be 120%? What would differential calculas or algebra look like? Would Pi still be 3.1459......? The physical ratio would still be the same but the numerical label applied would most likely be unrecognizable to us.

I don't remember writing this. It doesn't even look like anything I would have written. I simply cannot have written anything this inane or meaningless. I must conclude therefore that I did not write it.  And hence, I have found that second discrepancy, I am now prepared to accept that I truly have slipped over to a different universe from where I was, where my blood pressure was 89/120 and not 120/89.

I have the oddest feeling that the point at which the universe forked and I got caught on the wrong fork, was when Romney lost to Obama in November 2012.

Please, no politics, but I'm pretty sure that's when it happened.

So here I am, lost in the wrong Universe, with no way to get back.

They have Emergency on MeTV here. If I remember, I will watch it and tell you how they do it.

It is funny how your brain can keep rewriting stuff due to expectations.

Hello Stargazer...

What an interesting post... I hate to break this to you, but in regard to blood pressure... the standard hoped for has always been 120/80... as long as I can remember... The fact that you are 120/89 means that your blood pressure is slightly elevated, i.e., the 89 is just a little high.  The 120 is a little more flexible without causing too much concern... I usually test  in the 130's over the 70's which while not optimal is okay.

I find your screen name interesting also, in relation to the topic title...

When I read this first post I laughed out loud.  One of my earliest memories was as a very young child living in Newfoundland. I was no older than 3 years old.  One morning I got up and was walking down the hallway.  While walking I had both arms out in front of me and crossing them.  I was putting pressure on my arms as they were crossed.  All of a sudden my right arm slipped past my left arm but my arms were still crossed and the pressure had been reversed.  In my young mind I was convinced that my right arm had slipped over to my left arm and vice-versa.  It scared me and I was so worried that I had done something wrong I never mentioned it.  The thought that I had changed my arms haunted me for years afterword.  Worse, I have never told anyone about it until now.

My advice to Stargazer is, just wait.  When your appendages begin to start changing places you will know that you have entered.....the twilight zone.

As to the exact blood pressure, I was just throwing numbers around.

Yes, I figure that the "you" posting in this thread would be very familiar with 120/80 because "you" are continuous in this particular Universe. The "me" in this thread, am apparently not so continuous and am a recent import.

I only hope not to find out that the "me" originally in this Universe got swapped out in the switch, and is not still here, and about to run into the this "me".

Well, if you find the BP being reported as I remember it, this will calm my concern about Universe swapping.

Well, they are still where they were originally. As best I can tell.

And I should tell you that when it comes to the BP thing, I am dead serious. Something is off. And I am sure it isn't me.

Do you remember a ways back when the colors used in reporting which party in the US was dominant in a given state? Like now it is "red" states are Republican-dominant, while "blue" states are Democrat-dominant. When I was a kid it was opposite from that. This, however, is not a universe-swapping issue, since this universe has a record of the switch: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_states_and_blue_states

As to my post at DrShades's board, well, I don't remember posting it, don't like now what I posted, but I suppose it could have been me, after all.

I would post something, but I don't want to give my good friend, Stargazer, any more of a complex than he already has. ;) Somebody should contact Rod Serling (although dear, departed Rod has slipped beyond the veil, so it will require some supernatural means to do so): this is good material for an episode of The Twilight Zone. :)  (As for your forgotten post over at Shady Acres , I simply resolve issues such as that by saying that I'm not responsible for anything I wrote/said more than five minutes ago ... ;))

P.S.: This may confuse the issue further :unknw::unsure:, or it may help: just remember that the larger number records blood pressure as the heart beats, and the smaller number records pressure between beats when the heart is at rest ...

All very disconcerting, Stargazer.  I can understand your concern.  As to meeting this universe's self in this universe while you are also in it, well, according to Star Trek, that won't happen as this universe's Stargazer will have beamed into your universe at the moment you entered this!  And is probably even now wondering how to get back!! :)

Well, just because you got confused about blood pressures doesn't mean you wrote that post over there.  There is someone who posts as Selek and is clearly not Selek.

The brain is a funny thing. I remember talking about Steve Vai with a friend in 1996. I remember thinking that we were talking about vai's new signature amp that Carvin made. I remember talking about how it had great gain and sounded really good. Well come to find out that in 2011 I wanted 2 of these amps. So I started researching it. This amp first appeared in 1999. I thought on this for a long time and I am still certain we talked about this amp. But what could have happened is we were talking about Eddie Van Halen's amp with Peavey or we were talking about Steve Vai's Evolution pickups that Dimarzio makes. Either way it still creeps me out as I still have it in my head we talked about Steve's new amp. The other thing is that my friend said he  went to a guitar store and checked "it" (What ever it is) and it had lots of gain. Carvin is factory direct so there is no way he did that as there are no Carvin stores in Utah. So I am left thinking it must have been Eddie's 5150 Peavey amp. But still.........
