Mormon Jargon

I dunno.  It's probably just me, but there's an undercurrent of snark to a lot of these that kinda puts me off.:unknw:

If one more Utah missionary couple comes to tell us how wonderful it is to be serving 'out in the mission field' as opposed to being in Utah I am going to pop them in the nose.

Risk going to jail for assault if you like ;), but Utahns aren't the only people I've heard use that phrase.

As a long-time purveyor of snark, I'd say this is pretty tame.

True, our "Cyber-acquaintanceship" has been limited, but I haven't known you to employ the sort of meanspiritedness which seems to underlie the definitions promulgated by the purveyor of this Mormon lexicon.

It is well.

Some of these really made me smile...Supernal, Uchtdorf, Teach, Apostate, and others were very funny.

There was a little snark, but so what.

The garment definition made me laugh because every time we go to Disneyland my wife and I play "spot the Mormon".

I've said a lot of things that make that "Jargon" post look rather innocent.

If you've said them here, and if you've said them with the same degree of meanspiritedness that seems to accompany the post under discussion, I haven't noticed.  :unknw:  (Perhaps you're more cynical and less good-natured than I give you credit for being, John.  Perhaps I'm simply not a good judge of character, either in real life or in Cyberspace.  Or perhaps you're really not as cynical and meanspirited as you might (for whatever reason) like to make people believe you are. ;))

OK, read 'em all, suffered through most of 'em, but (along with JLHPROF) liked her definition of "Uchtdorf."  Can't understand why someone who thinks there's a grain of truth (indeed, it would seem to me that most people who have an affinity for this sort of thing think that there's more than a grain of truth) in most of these definitions would want to remain (active) in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  Maybe I simply suffer from a huge blind spot and employ a huge double-standard, but if she's aiming to be Robert Kirby and Pat Bagley, she missed that boat by a mile, IMO.  (Somehow, I can't envision her being invited to a FAIR(Mormon!) Conference to talk about how we Mormons need to learn better how to laugh at ourselves.)

Kirby at least starts from the standpoint that the Church of Jesus Christ is true (or at least, that there's truth [or at least redeeming value] in it).  I wonder if the same is true of her and those of her ilk.  I was the target of not a few jokes (and worse) in school.  Some few of my peers wanted to laugh with me, a lot of them laughed at me, and not a few in the second group wanted to attempt to convince me that they wanted to laugh with me while they actually were laughing at me.  Whether this has less to do with reality than with my perception of it is an open question, but she reminds me of the people in that third group.

Maybe I'm both. :)

I went through an angry phase, and I dealt with it with cynical, sarcastic, biting humor aimed at the church. That phase passed, but I own what I said and did. I'm glad that's over.

Whew!  I am, too, John.  For the Church and for your family and friends who are still believing members ... but mostly for you. :)  (It's hard to carry around loads of toxic emotions.  I'm glad you reached a certain level of détente.)

Mormon Jargon is a funny thing.  Twice in the last year, I have had conversations with individuals whom I knew immediately were LDS by their 'jargon'.  I responded in kind with similar jargon to see their eyes light up.  This is a new area where I have expanded my business.  It is also a growing community where some would say, 'look how the church is growing'.  Well not really,  they were all mormon before they arrived; they have just transferred to this area to create a pretty solid ward.  But, back to the conversation.  After going on for 5-10 minutes, I get the questions; What ward and calling.......?   No, no...full disclosure - I was once a mormon but am no more.  They always have this confused look on their faces for a moment like, how can this guy be an ex and not bashing us and does really good things in the community and is a good person in general.

It leaving the church, I have maintained many friends within the church (minus the few idiots) but my wife was not so lucky.  Women seem to have a more proverbial stick up their butts than men.  To this day, my wife has yet to receive a call from all those that were 'so concerned'.

If I ever felt the need to leave the church, I'd move first, it'd be too painful to witness the story with your wife.

Your mindreading skills no doubt are legendary ... at least, in your own mind. ;)

I wonder if in part it is that women worry more about saying the wrong thing and causing more hurt and pain.  At least that is what would stop me from calling.

I'll always strike up a conversation if I'm near an LDS in line at Disneyland.  I've met a lot of interesting people.

A few years ago, we were at Disneyland in the fall when the schools must have been out in Utah, because there were BYU shirts everywhere.  My son grumbled "Next time let's come on Sunday so there won't be any Mormons here..."

I still don't know if he was being sincere, or if his sense of humor goes drier than mine.
