I was finally able to track down this quote I heard years ago...

Brethren and sisters, for the sake of your dead and for the sake of yourselves, be faithful and have no feelings in your hearts against one another, but learn to suffer wrong rather than do wrong, and by so doing we will outstrip all our enemies and conquer the evil one, for know ye not that there is Zion? know ye not that the millennium has commenced? We have had Zion upon the earth this fourteen years. Peace reigns among this people which is Zion. Union and true charity dwells with this people: this is the most orderly and peaceable people upon the face of the whole earth. Well, this is Zion, and it is increasing and spreading wider and wider, and this principle of Zion, which is peace, will stretch all over the earth; that is the millennium.

The saints will increase, and continue to increase, and virtue, love, holiness, and good

principles, will continue to spread and spread and will rule the nations of the earth, and who is there that can stop its progress? None, but it will roll until there is no room for the evil; then he will be bound and shut up. The principles of the kingdom of God will prevail, from city to city, from nation to nation, until the devil shall be bound and there is no place for him.

What do make of it?

What about all the prophecies of the events leading to the Second Coming? What of the Second Coming itself?

Is he saying that the coming in glory comes after the Millennium?

The Baha'i Faith teach that. Iirc, they say that the 2WW was "Armageddon". I read/heard before that the Millennium began with Christ's reappearance in the temple, but that his general appearance would usher in the reign of peace. Meanwhile until that event many prophecies would be fulfilled to convince those in the world. But the Saints would already know the millennium had begun. How many Mormons know the millennium has begun? I would say very few believe it this way....

“When Satan is bound in a single home—when Satan is bound in a single life—the Millennium has already begun in that home, in that life” (The Teachings of Spencer W. Kimball, ed. Edward L. Kimball [1982], 172). This can happen before, during and after the prophesied events leading to the Second Coming, as well being part of the scenario President Young laid out. This is all part of our preparing the earth for the Second Coming, which is the Lord's contribution to the Millennium and confirmation of His Millennial reign.

Brother Brigham appears to be saying that the "Millennium" has already begun wherever there is true Zion, the pure in heart. On that basis, we could say that the City of Enoch had the Millennium already, and that the Millennium as a local state of mind exists in every LDS temple, and in every community of united faithful. We might be talking here about a spiritual state such as St Augustine's City of God which exists in the world, but which is only discernible by God Himself, and is to be distinguished from the fallen City of Man with which it coexists. Maybe Brigham meant it to be more than a pep-talk to the Saints, but it does not deal with the prophesied Millennium, which is still future -- though the signs of the times make it to be very near.

There are several schools of thought on the Millennium:

Pre-Millennialists

Millennialists

Post-Millennialists

Amillennialists

And they get confused in disputes about when or if the rapture or tribulation must occur:

pre-trib

post-trib

Take your pick. It's a theological minefield.

The early saints expected the millenium in their lifetimes. The quote is merely a reflection of that (plus, depending on when it was done, may have not included all the knowledge that eventually came through revelation about the Millenium).

If our ancestors of just 200-300 hundred years ago could see how we now live, they would be very tempted to call it the millennium.

Maybe those evolusionists are right, maybe the world ends when we destroy it ourselves. Go Obama! (Just Kidding!!)

Mormon and Moroni saw us from over 1500 years ago and they seem to disagree.

If you, living 200 years ago, were shown in vision the US today , which place would best represent the true situation? Detroit ? Las Vegas? SLC ? New Orleans ? How about Temple Square during GC, or South Beach during spring break , or under the highway overpasses in just about any big city ? To get an accurate picture one would hope that the Lord showed more than just the wickedness unless one was viewing a time sufficiently removed from the current day ,that that was all there was.

Last time I looked at my family tree Mormon and Moroni weren't on it.

But just think for a moment about the things we take for granted.

Telephones, electricity, computers, internet, mobile phones, TV, cars, supermarkets, aeroplanes, elevators, food, medical treatments, longevity............. the list goes on. My ancestors would be blown away by such things.

Yeah, but it does not make us more righteous. I do not think our ancestors would be fooled into thinking we are moral gods because we can flymthrough the air and live longer.

How are people today significantly different from the past? Just because a child now growing up sees cellphones and CGI entertainment and the Internet as commonplace does not make him/her different biologically or emotionally from earlier people. Moral decisions are everywhere. How are people behaving morally? I think that on the whole more people are behaving morally, i.e. justly toward one another. That is a byproduct of affluence, which reduces the "need" for crime. If the world of growing affluence takes a nosedive we are for it: people will revert to self preservation as they always have done....

I would disagree that more people are behaving justly. While I agree that crime is less needed (by criminals acting criminally in order to live) in an affluent society I do not agree that means crime has decreased. Violent crime has decreased in general, at least in the United States, but other forms are increasing. There are of course also abhorrent things being done with the puny defense that they are not illegal.
