Rivers Posted June 4, 2016 Posted June 4, 2016 Just watched the new Les Miserables again. So so good. I'm not the biggest fan of musicals but this movie is such a great adaptation. But Russell Crowe as Javert? Seriously?

bluebell Posted June 4, 2016 Posted June 4, 2016 We watched "The Finest Hours" last night. It's about a coast guard rescue in the NE in 1952. The main actor is the guy who plays Captain Kirk in the new Star Trek movies. It was a good movie, definitely family friendly and inspiring. 1
Deborah Posted June 5, 2016 Posted June 5, 2016 I've watched "Kingdom of God" multiy ple times but got the blu-ray director's cut. So much detail left out in theatrical version and it really fleshed out the story. I never get tired of that movie.

Garden Girl Posted June 10, 2016 Posted June 10, 2016 (edited) I rented "The Finest Hours" starring Chris Pine and Casey Affleck... based on a true story of a Coast Guard rescue of a crew from a sinking oil tanker that had been ripped in half during a massive storm off Cape Cod... a story of overwhelming courage and dedication against horrendous odds of success... Living here on the coast, and a few miles up the highway from Newport, OR (known as Coast Guard city because of its permanent Coast Guard facility), I'm well familiar with the sound of the CG helicopters as they patrol the coast... and for the numerous water rescues not only of watercraft, but of people caught in various conditions from rip tides to stranded on rocks when the tide catches them unawares, etc etc. I should mention that our Lincoln City Fire Dept has a water rescue unit that can rescue many swimmers, but they often have to call in the CG for more difficult rescues. I love our two lighthouses that sit out on the points, with their lights beaming forth ever vigilant for the sailors off our shores... the men of the Coast Guard are a special breed... I have a family member who made the CG his life career, with a specialty in water rescue (the type that jump out of the helicopter into the water to rescue someone and help them get into the baskets so they can be lifted into the helicopter), etc. A very good movie... First was Austenland, a really cute romantic comedy about a woman who is obsessed with Jane Austen novels and takes a vacation to a place called Austenland in England where paying guests can pretend to live in the Regency Era and actors provide the experience of actually being in a Jane Austen novel. It stars Kerri Russel. The second one was 13 Hours, about the Benghazi uprising (or whatever the best term would be) and an ambassador and a few others were killed because America refused to send help. It was sad, but interesting. There's not much gore (for a war movie) but they do use the F word (though not NEARLY as much as other war movies).
Garden Girl Posted June 18, 2016 Posted June 18, 2016 I just watched 10 Cloverfield Lane starring John Goodman... at times an edge of your seat story about a man (Goodman) who had built a large survival bunker in his basement in case of emergency... the emergency comes in the form of what he tells a young woman and man who he brought in for safety was an alien attack... they eventually become suspicious... and I won't tell more because it is a very suspenseful story... GG

GG I heard that the ending was really disappointing. I haven't seen the movie myself so i'm wondering if you found it that way?
bluebell Posted June 18, 2016 Posted June 18, 2016 I watched The Intern and did not like the moral of the story at all. It's all about feminism (which i don't have a problem with) but what i took issue with was the idea that the wife and mother in the family should not feel badly about working 24/7 because the business is her dream and no one else can do it as good as she does and that her husband owes his support to her regardless of how little she is home. There is no way that hollywood in this day and age would make a movie like this where the husband was neglecting his family (and his intern had to take his daughter to a birthday party because neither parent was available) because of work and the moral would be that the wife's duty is to accept it. Even hollywood would recognize that that's not o.k. for a husband and father to do. I'm not sure why they are trying to sell me the idea that it should be acceptable for a woman to behave that way. 1

Years ago, Mel Gibson played the title character in a movie version of Hamlet, which was an exact reproduction of the play. Surprisingly, he was excellent in it.

There is some flatulence humor, and some may not care for it; but, I'm not too ashamed to say that both of us laughed--right out loud. The special effects are amazing, and it's a very nice kind of "lonely child" story.

It had significance beyond 'let's see how embarrassing we can make passing gas be!' bif the book follows the movie well, I am looking forward to seeing it. It is a great book for reading aloud, btw, if parents are trying to get their kids interested in reading or just looking for something to do together. Most of Dahl's books make for great reading aloud. 1

Garden Girl Posted July 10, 2016 Posted July 10, 2016 I just watched an excellent movie... titled "Eye in the Sky" starring Helen Mirren, who I think is an extremely talented actress... this is a thought-provoking, nail-biting film about a military exercise involving a drone strike and the possible collateral damage and morals surrounding it... Garden Girl Posted July 23, 2016 Posted July 23, 2016 I rented a film that was deemed a 92% approval rating (Rotten Tomatoes), so I was looking forward to a break from political news to watch a good movie... titled 600 Miles... a story about an ATF agent tracking a gun runner... the gun runner kidnaps the agent and begins a 600 mile journey to take the agent to his suppliers in Mexico... along the way they develop a trust and friendship... I got about 5 minutes into the film and realized I would not be able to watch it... the language was pervasive with serious profanity... I had to turn it off because I just couldn't subject my spirit to such language... WHY do film makers think they have to use such raw language, and not just an occasional word but pervasive so that in the first few minutes I could see what it was to be. I don't care what the rating was... just couldn't do it... GG 3
