Yay!  I wish we didn't have to wait until 2026 for the printed books.  I don't think much will change in sacrament meetings until that happens.  At least we have a date now though.

I’m excited to hear and learn what new music has been accepted from the submission of musicians/composers in the general membership.  I am glad they are opening the doors to modern sounds and song innovation.  What a cool opportunity to leave a lasting legacy.  I wish I would have made some more effort to get my hymn finished and submitted in time.  I am also curious to see what “world” sounds and songs might have been included from other world cultures.

Yeah, the church probably should have picked a different day for the announcement. At least they didn’t announce the Kirtland temple purchase on April first.

I only remember ever singing that song regularly on my mission... in Argentina.

We sang every hymn throughout the year and then repeated the cycle  for two decades in my wards here in Utah (the same chorister over the years even though new wards were organized 3 times due to her being very active, but stuttering was her bane; since no issue when singing and musically talented…her daughter has inherited her position now) and yet I never remember singing this…and I was consistently attending for at least the first few years.  I must have conveniently missed those every couple of years days when this one was sung as I think I would have burst out laughing on reading it, at least in my mind and therefore remember.  I know the title well as one of the hymns people dislike.  Now I know why, lol.  Not the most poetic hymn.  Lecture in verse.  Sounds more Carrie Nation.

You don’t even live in ‘Deseret’, or perhaps you did at one time? Why else would anyone subject themselves to it?  I think I remember grandma singing the first verse like she would Love at Home when we were fighting.  Maybe that caused me to blot it out of my mind.

Wishful thinking by the locals?  How does it sound in Spanish? I get it if they interpret Deseret as a synonym for Zion, meaning where the people of God gather.  Their home would be Deseret just as much as Utah, Nevada, parts of California, Arizona and other current states that were going to comprise it.  But is they saw it as signing about Utah, why?

I remember learning it in primary in Wyoming. It was for the primary program and I’m pretty sure that those songs are chosen by somebody at headquarters. So I’m thinking someone in the general primary presidency or general authorities really liked this song. I’ve always hated this song.

I hope we lose true to the faith as well. The whole part where you yell out yes and no just sounds dumb and it doesn’t work at all for converts.

Google translate:

I voted for “Come Thou Fount.” Pretty sure I read somewhere it was the most requested mostly thanks to the Mack Wilberg arrangement for the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square. I also requested “Amazing Grace” which was sung often in the church I grew up in. I should have requested many more from my Evangelical Protestant upbringing  such as: “Power in the Blood”, “I Surrender All”, “As The Life of a Flower” (sung at my paw-paw’s funeral) and we had a lot of songs with The word Zion in them but in Texas we sing it with the emphasis on the second syllable like the word “on” and I still do that sometimes to this day, lol.

This is what I'm guessing - 1978 was a big anniversary for primary. My stake put on a play about Aurelia Rogers who is seen as the founder of primary. I think, but am not sure that the church put out the play and either had stakes put it on or could choose to put it in. But it's possible it was just a popular thing to do, but not put out by the church 

At the first primary ever "In our lovely deseret" was sung and so it was also in the play.

I had tried out and got a part in the play. It was a wonderful experience and I actually have fond memories when singing the song. 

I suspect that given the timing the good feelings are a part of why it is there, but also because of the history.

Great movie by the way.

In two weeks and participating in an old Opry style, three hour show, and I’m cramming to learn all these old - as - dirt country tunes. I don’t know what the fuss was over the Carter family. They couldn’t count any better than Johnny Cash could and they had no idea what head voice was supposed to be 😕

but the songs themselves are pretty sweet, as demonstrated by the movie!

We sang it often enough that I have it memorized- not sure why my area. 

i did however attend a LOT of BYU.  8 years of lovely deseret.

Or how about “roses bloom beneath our feet, all the earth’s a garden sweet”? I haaaaaaate that song. It seems to be the default Mother’s Day song and it’s so sappy.

I’m like calm- my mom used to sing it when the kids would fight. There must’ve been a relief society lesson on that because it seems to be a common childhood trauma lol
