Will You Be Celebrating Palm Sunday?

We still don’t have a liturgical calendar. I wouldn’t mind it if we did though. I appreciate getting away some from the low church traditions that church founders brought with them.

And for this reason the new hymnbook is taking so long to compile…trying to match each hymn with calendar days and personages of celebration has proven quite daunting. 😏

I was referring mostly to your repeated accusations made against the church, which seemed to be based on Elder Stephenson’s talk though there isn’t anything in the talk that supports the claim that the church is casting off “generations of beliefs” trying to prove to the Christian world that we are Christian.

The accusations against the church that came from a benign general conference talk is what came across (to me) as snarky.

Against?  I don't recall posting anything against the church.  I simply asked a question.

I find it interesting to watch the church pivot and cast off generations of previously long held beliefs in order to prove to the Christian world, who doesn't like the church anyway, that the church is Christian.  I predict a major fail.

But it seems the church has a mission to convince the christian world that the church is (cough cough) Christian. Can palm fronds in sacrament meeting and the wearing of a cross be far behind?  In fact, I predict that in the near future wearing a cross will become quite acceptable for members of the church.

I also predict that FAIRMormon will soon be editing its website to remove or edit this article.

Yes, the above posts seemed to be accusations against the church, that the church is doing something negative (pivot and cast off generations of previously long held beliefs) in order to achieve something negative (to convince the Christian world we are Christian).

Hi Craig Speechly.  Thanks for the clarification, and I apologize if I caused offense by misinterpreting you.  I’ll be more careful in the future.

I'm perplexed.  You're attempting to convince me of my own motivations for making this post and are arguing that you some how know my motivations better than I do.  Why not just take me at my word? And how exactly is my OP casting negitive motivations towards the church?  Convincing the world of its Christainness is not a negative pursuit, it is the very core mission of the church.

You if believe that the Christian world already accepts the church as a Christian denomination and that the church has other motivations for abandoning over 200 years of relatively ignoring Palm Sunday and is now making attempts to pivot, then you and I have had quite a difference experience in church.

I’m sorry if I gave the wrong impression. I wasn’t trying to convince you of your motivations, I was explaining why two of your posts came across as snarky to me. It wasn’t that OP that I felt was accusatory, it was two other posts, which I quoted so you would know what I was referring to.

I’m sorry I misunderstood you. I don’t think I read your post unreasonably, but apparently I did not interpret the tone correctly.

Well the BOM was almost quoted in The Chosen.

Nah, according to Pew there are already more Christians who way we're Christians than not. Evangelicals excepted.

There are sects that claim a "restoration" (Stone-Campbell tradition, etc.)

It just takes time. Catholics and Protestants didn't consider each other Christians for 200 years.

Big question is, do we want that "honor"? If you look at the face of Christendom right now, I'd rather not...

Certainly.

  • In addition to the Latin Rite Church, there are 23 other Catholic Churches that are in full communion with the pope.
  • There are Anglicans who see themselves as very much Catholic, and even have arguments and traditions centered in apostolic succession. Anglicans are close enough to Catholics theologically that there is an expedited way for Anglicans to join the Catholic Church. There is even a short path for Anglican priests to become Catholic priests. Whole congregations of Anglicans have joined the Catholic Church en masse (or in Mass!).

Thanks

To add to what Bonaventure said, the Eastern Catholic Churches are pretty much identical in liturgy to their Eastern Orthodox counterparts. This webpage contains a list of the 23 churches: https://www.catholicsandcultures.org/eastern-catholic-churches

Was just going to add asking that part. Thank you.

I've attended a few non-LDS Christian gatherings with a sermon where Joseph Smith was quoted.  Of course it was at a presentation on Mormonism and why you shouldn't be a "Mormon", but he was quoted :)

It still boggles my mind that other Christian churches have lessons on Mormonism and other groups.

If you look at true Christendom I think it would be wonderful to have that honor.  I know a lot of Christians that have so much love for their fellow men.

I’ve been to a few of those. One came shockingly close to inciting violence.

Sorry, I don’t share your optimism. As long as we hold to Joseph and the Restoration we will maintain our position on the fringe. After all, he claimed to see God. What other denominations can countenance that? It’s been almost 200 years. 😉

Which are you talking about? My pillow guy, Westboro Baptists, the people who stormed the capital, or Pat Robertson?

Disciples Of Christ aren't on the fringe.

If you look at the curriculum of evangelical colleges, their entire approach to world religions is apologetics. Tear down the other side.

We find common ground, find things to envy, and some apologetics as well.

Most Christians already consider Mormons Christians. Gotta remember to take your tranquilizers in the morning.648-7.gif

No, I will not be celebrating Palm Sunday. As a lifelong member of more than 5 decades, I have never been taught through Mormonism how to celebrate Palm Sunday.

Isn't that analogous to waving white handkerchief during temple dedications?  In the OT Mosaic Law it is indicated that on Nisan 10 a paschal lamb meeting all the requirements is selected and "set apart".  On Nisan 14 it was sacrificed.

Nisan 10 corresponds to Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem (being chosen by the people on Sunday). The evening of Nisan 14 was the Last Supper preliminary to His agonizing ordeal in the Garden of Gethsemane all night Thursday (according to Jewish customs, the day "ended" at sundown so it could have been Friday all that night with the crucifixion occurring in the following daytime it still being Friday).

So you are not capable of figuring out for yourself something that works for you?  You have to be told how to do everything?  No imagination?  No research skills?
