At moments like these I am okay with Utah...but I still prefer Canada 🇨🇦 in the summer!

Going to Glacier National Park soon, the closest I get to Canada the better! Only been once while on a cruise to Alaska, but in my thoughts sometimes, I wish I could move my entire family there. I'll probably be beat up for saying so, sounds so un-American.

I will refuse to go if masks aren't required. Instructions from my bishop indicate they will be in our ward. Our ward is resuming meetings, but it's not my group's turn until next week. And masks are required in public in my state anyway.

We started going back in June and masks have always been required to attend, even though our state doesn't have a mandate.  I hate wearing them but I'm not going to stop going to church because of it.

Since Glacier is landlocked in northern Montana, how did you visit in on an Alaskan Cruise?  (Not doubting your story, just wondering how it worked).

Our Alaska cruise included going to Canada near Victoria where Butchart Gardens is located and a few other excursions. Then ended in Portland I believe, it's been awhile. Or maybe I'm misunderstanding your post?

I thought you had said that the only time you had ever been to Glacier National Park was on an Alaskan cruise, but maybe you meant the only time you had been to Alaska?

No, the only time I've been to Canada. Calm had mentioned how she'd like to be in Canada in the summer, I believe. And I mentioned that soon I'm heading up to Glacier, so pretty close to the Canada border, never been there and super excited!

Got it!

Glacier is really pretty.  I hope you have a wonderful time.

I live in San Francisco and I ride my bike a lot throughout the city.  I rarely see anyone, young or old not wearing a mask.  I wear my mask while bike riding.  I don't think I am at risk to myself or others because I am never in close proximity to anyone, but I think it sends a message that we are all in this together and we all need to watch out for others.  Anything we can do to cut down on the exposure to this virus is exactly what we should be doing.  It makes me sad that helping others and ourselves from getting sick has become a political statement.

Yet, San Francisco is also experiencing a similar spike in cases.

Florida and Texas governors do not deny the efficacy of wearing masks nor do they tell people not to wear them, in fact they strongly encourage people to wear them, but they don't feel they have the right to require it.

Covid has a way of changing peoples minds regarding the right to protect life in an emergency pandemic by mandating masks:

Here's why:

Texas reported 10,000 new cases for the third straight day and 129 additional deaths. The state has seen a third of its more than 3,400 total COVID-19 fatalities in the first two weeks of July alone.

Dr. Ivan Melendez, Hidalgo County’s public health authority, said it’s not uncommon for the body of a COVID-19 patient to lay on a stretcher for 10 hours before it can be removed in the overcrowded hospitals where intensive care space is running short.

“Before someone gets a bed in the COVID ICU unit, someone has to die there,” Melendez said.

Elsewhere in the second-largest state, health officials in San Antonio also turned to refrigerated trailers to store the dead, and soldiers prepared to take over a COVID-19 wing of a Houston hospital.
An 86-person Army team of doctors, nurses and support staff was setting up a nursing station at United Memorial Medical Center and expected to begin treating up to 40 patients in the coming days.
Some of the soldiers from around the country wore their uniforms. Others wore scrubs affixed with strips of surgical tape that had their ranks, names and medical titles.
“This facility, working with the United States military, is something that we asked for,” said U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, a Houston Democrat, standing near the soldiers as they worked. “We have exhausted medical personnel that we’re so grateful to, but we didn’t have enough.”

I tried to count.  There are around 113 people packed shoulder to shoulder like sardines in an enclosed room, with many elderly people, and only about 9 or 10 are wearing masks.  What is going on?

I am jealous.  I worked up in Glacier National Park for a summer.  I left the morning after graduating high-school.  One of my favorite places on earth.

My Bishop is still saying that masks are highly recommended but not required.  I am surprised as I live in Salt Lake County which mandates it.  It is the law.

There are required for our Ward. I am not going. The idea of trying to keep my kids in their face masks is horrible. My husband will be busy doing other things and won't be able to help. I see no point in going when we can just stay home.

We are in salt lake county as well. It had been drilled into everyone's head that you have to be masked up and then you lose all control of yourself when you walk in. Only one door in, one door out. You sit where they tell you. No taking kids to the lobby. No bathrooms. No talking to anyone. Right back to your cars as ushers direct you.  I see no reason to go.

If there needs to be that many rules, then maybe it's not safe enough to be back at church.

From this bishop's perspective--Your bishop is wrong. The direction from Salt Lake City has been perfectly clear from day one--we are to follow the health guidelines when meeting together.  Here are a only few examples from the church's recent instructions--

"A two-phase approach will be used, always following government regulations to ensure the health and safety of all involved." (https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/safe-return-church-meetings-activities)

-------

"Sabbath Day Worship Services:

"Phase 1

"Shortened meetings at the meetinghouse with up to 99 individuals, following local government regulations"  (https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/safe-return-church-meetings-activities)

------

"Follow government regulations in each location regarding public gatherings, including meeting size, frequency and duration. Please apply government regulations." (https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/safe-return-church-meetings-activities)

-------

"Follow public health agency recommendations for using a face mask." (https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/coronavirus-update#preventative-measures)

---------

As a bishop, I'm not going to stand at the door and turn people away if they don't have a mask on. I don't think I need to "enforce" these government orders. But, I absolutely must follow the direction of the brethren. And, as a leader, I cannot place a higher premium on avoiding offense than on following the inspired direction of our leaders. So, I continue to teach ward members that they should follow the local guidelines on wearing a mask when attending ward meetings. Most listen. Some won't. That's on them.

I should add that we all should be a little more like Ephraim Hanks--

“On many occasions [Ephraim] Hanks was rewarded for his obedience to the Prophet, Brigham Young. One spring morning he was at work, building an adobe house in the city. The basement was almost completed and he was just beginning to lay the sun-dried brick when Brigham drove up in his carriage and said, ‘Ephraim, how thick is that rock wall?’ “Eph answered that it was eight inches thick.

“Brigham said, ‘Tear it all down, Ephraim, and build it twice as thick.’ Then, as if to avoid argument, he turned his carriage around and drove away.

"Eph had been hauling rock from Ensign Peak for many days, and had paid a mason a good price to lay it in lime mortar. He dreaded the extra work and expense of doing it all over again. The mason, too, showed his disapproval by swearing and remarking, ‘Brigham Young may be a saint, but he’s no kind of a prophet about building stone walls!’ Nevertheless, Eph re-contracted with the stone mason to double the wall and the next morning started hauling rock again.

“A month later, they had laid on this sixteen-inch wall much adobe brick and mud. As they were putting up the rafters, a terrific storm started. Rain fell in sheets, causing streamlets of water to run in all directions. In a few minutes the basement of the new house was flooded, but the sturdy, thick walls stood safe and strong, supporting the house. A few days later when the water had drained out and they finished laying the rafters, Eph drove in the nails to the tune of ‘We Thank Thee, Oh God, for a Prophet.’” (Sidney Alvarus Hanks and Ephraim K. Hanks, Scouting for the Mormons on the Great Frontier, pp. 78–80., Quoted in https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/manual/doctrines-of-the-gospel/chapter-17?lang=eng)

 ---------

"Not long following this incident with Brigham Young, Eph met the Mormon leader at a dance in Salt Lake City. Again he counseled Eph. This time Eph was to go home and shave his face. Like many men of his day, Eph wore a beard almost to his waist. Somewhat puzzled, he left the social and rode home, pondering the unusual request.

"In an hour, however, he returned to the dance without a beard, but still wearing a mustache which he hadn't shaved. Still not satisfied with his appearance, Brigham Young indicated with a sweep of the hand across Eph's face that he wanted a clean shave.

"Excusing himself for a second time, Eph complied by shaving his entire face.

"It was perhaps this type of obedience to counsel that prompted the Mormon Church President to later say of Eph that 'Here was a man always ready to lay down his life for the authorities of the Church as well as for the cause of Zion and her people.'" (Richard K. Hanks, "Eph Hanks, Pioneer Scout," unpublished master's thesis, BYU, 1973, pp. 26-27)

Shave the beard, brethren. Or wear the damn mask. Or whatever it is. Just trust the brethren.

Apparently they removed the no sitting tape for spacing.

So you will allow them to stay unmasked?  Even though they are putting at risk those willing to comply?  If so, I don’t see much difference between that and the bishop who says recommended but not required.  I applaud your personal view, just thinking this is one of the few times consequences for not obeying should be immediate. They need to leave.
