bsjkki Posted March 18, 2020 Posted March 18, 2020 (edited) The following statement was released by the church spokesperson Daniel Woodruff: “The Salt Lake Temple, which is undergoing a seismic upgrade, sustained some minor damage during Wednesday morning’s earthquake. The trumpet on the Angel Moroni statue fell off, and there is minor displacement of some of the temple’s smaller spire stones. No workers were injured. Crews on the job site have been sent home for the day, and a full assessment is underway to determine needs going forward. pogi Posted March 18, 2020 Posted March 18, 2020 Check your gas lines. I could smell gas leaking from around my meter. I shut off the gas and the gas company is coming out to assess it. I would never had known if I didn’t go out and assess. And I am in Draper where it wasn’t as strong. 4

Thinking Posted March 18, 2020 Posted March 18, 2020 I felt it in Provo. I knew it was significant and wondered where the epicenter was. I turned on KSL and its transmission was blank. I tuned to KUTV and the notification bar at the bottom of the screen read "MASSIVE EARTHQUAKE HITS SLC." The reporters then said the magnitude was 5.7. I exclaimed out loud, "5.7 is not massive!" Suddenly the word MASSIVE disappeared from the screen. Methinks the person in charge of the notification bar got a little excited. That said, 5.7 is significant, and I'm sure we'll hear about a lot of damage. 2

The 2011 Tōhoku earthquake near Japan measured 9.1. 9.1 - 5.7 = 3.4 10^3.4 = 2511.886432 That earthquake was about 2500 times more powerful than today's 5.7. We should be thankful. 3

The earthquake specialist dude (sorry don’t remember his official title - but he was the head honcho for Utah) just reported on local news that the fault here in Utah is not capable of causing an earthquake larger than 7.0. The gas company just left and there definitely was a leak at a joint just below the meter. All fixed now. If they wouldn’t have sent me home from work this am, I would have missed it. 2

I’m glad now it wasn’t worse, but none of us at the time really knew how bad the impact would be. Salt Lake City, like it or not, is the world headquarters of the Church and for now the base of operations of the work of the kingdom of God on earth.
