Sealing Keys for marriage but not for other ordinances?

Recommended Posts

So if someone is baptized and confirmed, hopefully at some the Holy Spirit of Promise ratifies that ordinance and is sealed or validated in Heaven.I have no idea when or what that experience is like to have someone ratified by the Holy Spirit of promise. Yet, a person performing those two ordinances typically won't have the Sealing keys/Power. How though do you need the sealing keys for marriage but not for these other ordinances, if both are sealed in heaven-Hopefully?!

The Holy Spirit ratifies in heaven the legitimacy and validity of an ordinance when 1) it is performed by proper authority and 2) the person keeps it faithfully. This is one sense of sealing, as in “sealed by the Holy Spirit of Promise.” Ultimately, we need this sealing or validation of every ordinance from baptism onward in order to become exalted. This is a heavenly process.

Upon receiving all the ordinances, a person can receive a confirming personal witness of this validation from someone who possesses the sealing keys and is authorized by the President of the High Priesthood to do so. This is an earthly process and part of the sealing power that was restored by Elijah, which legitimizes every ordinance we have for the living and the dead. There was no difference in the potential validity of the restored ordinances before and after Elijah's restoration of these keys, but there was now a clear linkage for the Church in building the kingdom on both sides of the veil.

The so-called sealing or binding ordinances are those unifying marriage and family temple ordinances performed by proper authority. Being “sealed to” another person means you legitimately live your life together under the terms of the covenant in the eyes of God, whether that be as husband and wife, parents and children, living and dead. The term "sealing" is often taken to  describe the action taken to bind a couple together in marriage, but I think it is more accurately describing the unity and continuance with the kingdom in heaven, which is determined by the action of the Holy Spirit of Promise.

The baptism and gift of the Holy Ghost are done under the direction of the bishop or mission president who does hold the keys for those ordinances.

Fun fact...marriage sealings are not the only ordinance in the temple where blessings are sealed to those receiving it. When you have the chance, pay close attention to the initiatory blessings. I'm out of time for the day, But I may add some more later.

You should definitely go back and do initiatory again. Listen closely to what is said, and what is not said. It's interesting.

I may be daft, but I always thought it was the two people that were being "sealed" to each other.

In those other ordinances, it's just one person.

That is one common usage, but they (the ones performed in the sealing room) are called “sealing” ordinances because when ratified by the Holy Spirit of Promise the couples (and by extension their faithful children*) are sealed or approved for passage into exaltation. That is why the Holy Spirit of Promise ratifies (seals, approves) all the ordinances we receive prior to our being admitted into higher and higher glories until exaltation. The higher the ordinance that is sealed, the higher the glory; the sealing ordinances are the higher ordinances (as opposed to baptism, confirmation, ordination, etc. whcih prepare us for the ultimate ordinance).

* This is why the parent's sealing is so beneficial to their children who are sealed to them.

Looking into it, the Encyclopedia of Mormonism says this:

Quote

What might be called the general sealing power is also vested in the President of the Church. Everyone who receives the priesthood obtains this general sealing power to a degree. For example, as Elder Bruce R. McConkie said, "All things that are not sealed by this power have an end when men are dead. Unless a baptism has this enduring seal, it will not admit a person to the Celestial Kingdom…. All things gain enduring force and validity because of the sealing power" (MD, pp. 615-616).

(Emphasis added)

Yes, all the ordinances must be sealed by the Holy Spirit of Promise. The sealing ordinances are those last ones that open the way for the exaltation of families. The First Presidency has the sealing keys to perform these and delegates them to temple presidents and sealers, and they are operative for the living and the dead, effectuating things in heaven and earth. The sealing keys or power additionally control the elements of earth either by quickening them to bear heaven or by opening up heaven to discipline, punish or destroy that which is not quickened (as Encoh, the brother of Jared and Nephi did). In other words, the sealing power "sets" things (both spirit and element) in place to bring about the Lord's purposes.

Try to become a temple worker, and see if you can learn the differences between the male and female initiatory; it is incredibly illuminating, I cannot emphasize that enough... far beyond any gender-related terminology, it throws water on any battle between the sexes.

My 2 cents. All ordinances except for marriage sealings are a two-way covenant. A covenant between the person receiving the ordinance and God. The Marriage covenant is a three-way covenant. A covenant between the person/people receiving the ordinance and God, as well as a covenant between the husband and wife. The sealing power is sealing the husband and wife together. Then the "Holy Spirit of Promise" will ratify both aspects of covenant.

Does sealing include potential for polygamous arrangements after resurrection (as in the case of Brigham Young)?  Or has the
church stopped performing any sealings that could result in a continuation of polygamy?

Is this your way of asking whether people who are sealed to more than one spouse will remain sealed to them in the hereafter? Answer: If the Holy Spirit of Promise seals (or ratifies) the sealing ordinances received by couples and families (as I explained in more detail in posts above), these souls become sealed (i.e. fixed, set, seated) into exaltation, or into eternal life in Heavenly Father's family. They become "sure," as in their  "calling and election [made] sure." As exalted people, "an entrance shall be ministered unto [them] abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ," and thereby share in any number of potential, sanctioned "socialities."

Do them ASAP!

Yep, men need two more ordinances after that until they receive the same blessings as female initiatory.

...and one before even entering the temple (Melchizedek priesthood conferral and ordination to the office of elder) :)

Young men need this too (Aaronic/deacon), before doing baptisms for the dead.

Very different now, take your wife and go, and compare in the celestial room later

I actually dislike this reasoning. To me, the distinctions in the ordinances are tied more to the specific works they're asked to participate in this life. We're in the end given the exact same blessings, but I believe the tie women have to the veil is part of the reason for the distinctions.

I agree with everybody's assertion that you should go again. There's only so much I would feel comfortable sharing in an open forum. And learning from the temple is a personal experience that can't be had solely by knowing the technical parts. It's an experience and something learn again and again by taking in the words and seeking them out through scripture, experience, and prayer.

But that said, part of the initiatory ordinance is sealed by the ordinance workers performing them...so all temple workers who perform said ordinances also participate in the sealing power as they are given authority to do so. Interestingly, the part sealed is the one that most parallels the baptism ordinance.

Do them ASAP!

Isaiah 25:5 The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant.

Ordinances instituted in the heavens before the foundation of the world, in the priesthood, for the salvation of men, are not to be altered or changed. All must be saved on the same principles. -Joseph Smith

He set the temple ordinances to be the same forever and ever and set Adam to watch over them, to reveal them from heaven to man, or to send angels to reveal them." Joseph Smith

“Following the deaths of the Savior’s Apostles, the principles of the gospel were corrupted and unauthorized changes were made in Church organization and priesthood ordinances. Because of this widespread wickedness, the Lord withdrew the authority and keys of the priesthood from the earth.”-http://seminary.lds.org/mastery/basic-doctrines/dispensation-apostasy-and-restoration?lang=eng

If there is no change of ordinances there is no change of Priesthood - Joseph Smith

If a man gets a fullness of the priesthood of God he has to get it in the same way that Jesus Christ obtained it, and that was by keeping all the commandments and obeying all the ordinances of the house of the Lord.  Where there is no change of priesthood, there is no change of ordinances, says Paul. If God has not changed the ordinances and the priesthood, howl, ye sectarians! If he has when and where has He revealed it? Have ye turned revelators? Then why deny revelation? -Joseph Smith

I am really having trouble understanding the question here.

The first sentence says that the HSOP (Holy Spirit of Promise) validates ordinances in heaven.

The second sentence says you do not understand the "Experience" of having a person "ratified" by the HSOP.

In the first sentence you are speaking of ordinances, in the second sentence you are asking about the EXPERIENCE of having a PERSON ratified by the HSOP.

The third sentence speaks about a PERSON who is DOING the ordinance having the sealing power-  not the ordinance but the experience of "having a person ratified."

Who would be the person who is having the experience and since when to people have experiences of being "ratified"?

Presumably in the first sentence you have already said that the HSOP ratifies the ORDINANCE and not a person nor the sealing power of the person

In the last sentence you seem to presume that one does in fact NEED the sealing power to perform ordinances without evidence.

I am very confused about what the questions are.

I would love to help but I am not sure which of those questions you are asking or if you are asking them all?

So, we are taught that the HSOP validates ordinances in Heaven but I don't recall having any kind of confirmation that it was done for me, so how do I know any ordinance i've ever participated in is good or validated in Heaven? am I to experience this at some point or what?

Then we are taught that we need Sealing keys to also validate in Heaven an ordinance like being sealed in the Temple, my question is why do we need two validations for an ordinance? When I was baptized my brother didn't hold the Sealing keys to perform the ordinance, the Bishop held the key to allow it to happen but not to seal it in heaven, so that ordinance we are taught would be validated by the HSOP but if someone is sealed in the Temple, they are sealed by someone with the keys to do that and hopefully validated in Heaven and I am asking what's the difference between the HSOP and the Sealing keys if they do the same thing and why is marriage something you need for the sealing keys but not for an ordinance like say baptism?

on a related note, when I talk about experience I grew up in the Church, nursery to now and growing up I heard all these RMs talk about when they were released from their mission they had this experience of physically feeling the "mantle" leave them, like something physically left them almost and it was a moment that they felt one way before and now they felt different after this mantle left them. When I was sitting in the Stake President's office and he told me to take my tag off, I was expecting to physically feel this sensation of something leaving me but I felt nothing. I concluded either I never had anything to begin with or it never left me which I am curious as to what was going on. Is the HSOP like that kind of thing? and what of the Sealing keys, why are their two kinds of validation in Heaven and is it to be experienced?
