Do you see the church shortening the Endowment?

In the temple you can go and do many baptisms, confirmations, initiatories and sealings at a time. 1 endowment session takes like 2.5 hours to get 1 name through. I believe this is where there's a big backup in ordinances to do. What spends a lot of time in the endowment is someone relating something to another and they relay the same thing to another. The cycle keeps going through the whole session saying every word and repeating every word. Do you think getting rid of all the repetition would help shorten the time an endowment session takes or all every single one of those repetitions and relating of information back and forth necessary to get the true experience. I know they've taken things out of the endowment in the past.

Well, the Temple isn't a factory where you need to pump put as many widgets as you can, so I don't see them shortening it. Besides of which, it's nice to sit in the Celestial room with your mind free and not have to worry about another group of people coming in.

They've shortened it before. In 1990 and 2005. Plus in the old days, an endowment would last like 8 hours.

I know but you can only cut off so much

It is only my opinion, but as a past temple worker of over eight years, I could easily see the endowment for the dead reduced to being at the veil. The purpose would be to speed up the work only.

I've often thought we should do an entire 1-hour baptismal service when we do Temple baptisms.  Sing some primary songs, have some talks on baptism and the holy ghost, and then have the Temple President come in and welcome the new spirits into the Church.

and treats!!!!! if God can cook Nephi's meat then why not some munchies?

I'm not saying treats. I'm just saying have more time for more endowments.

Be it noted that many temple patrons are in their retirement years. When they go from one room to another they forget why they went . They need reminding so as to focus on the task at hand. Those here under 40 are perhaps not experiencing such problems . Trust me when I say.... what WAS I saying... give me a minute... it will come to me..

I was reading in Pres. Anthon H. Lund's diary a tick ago and he said that Pres. Joseph F. Smith "objects to the hurry with which the ordinances are performed", apparently they made a rule that had 1200 baptisms for the dead done in a day and also only up to 240 people coming to the Temple in a day (Anthon H. Lund diary, April 27, 1916)

Are old people also the reason why they never turn on the air conditioning in temples during the endowment? I've seen many people pass out from heat this summer and I almost passed out in the Provo temple because there was no air flowing. It gets too hot during a session.

A lot of the temple liturgy is generic, and other words and actions would do the job just as well.  In fact, temple liturgy has varied widely down through time, and not just in the past century and a half.  In other words, the theme of "My Fair Lady" is the same as "Pygmalion," and the message gets across either way.

The oaths and covenants may have minimum requirements, but the penalties can be explicit or merely implicit (as they are now).  Actual key words can be altered by translating them into the vernacular (just as the Roman Catholics did at Vatican II), but the authenticity of the ordinances/sacraments remains the same.

As with the form and order for the coronation of royalty, these ceremonies have a great deal of inertia.  One could indeed shorten them more than they already have, but we have a whole millennium to get them all done anyhow -- so what's the rush?  Meantime, consider the meditative value of each endowment session, the quiet time for reflection and the kind of repetition which is frequently a door into the other side of the veil (literally and figuratively).  Compare sitting zazen:  Why would anyone be in a hurry?  What would Lord Siddhartha say?

It would be very easy to shorten the endowment.  One thing that the younger crowd could get behind is using lots of acronyms.  They are used to text messages with the normal LOL and BFF, and the rest.  I am sure that can be done many places in the endowment.

I just cant picture Lucifer in a temple video using slang or text talk.

I just went tonight for the first time in years and saw a new to me video. I liked it for the most part, but I kept thinking, "Does Satan have to talk so slow?!" Overly dramatic. Or just be dramatic faster. I liked that Adam and Eve had more emotion.

Endowments are hard to do, especially now that we live an hour away.

Let me guess it was the bald Lucifer? That's my old Bishops nephew.

Seriously though,  I like the endowment as it is now, just as I did before the changes (some of which I really miss - and I really miss the live actors, but that’s another topic), because Sister Gui and I often learn new things that we share in the celestial room afterwards. The new interpretations have opened up all sorts of wonderful understandings for us. Rushing through with a shortened version, IMO, would be detrimental and counterproductive.

I used to prefer endowment sessions because they’re so slow. I also recall there being two versions, and one was a bit quicker, but I preferred the longer version because of the actors. I don’t think I’ve been for 10 years-ish, though, so they may be different now

Maybe offer an express version during certain times or in the smaller temples or something, then like a meditative/napping session for the others?

But them speaking English doesn't seem odd to you?

It all happened in America. The phrase, “Speak English or get out” is older than you think.

The endowment actually got a few minutes longer when they brought out the new movies because of the drama involved.

I love the new movies, but after you’ve seen them a couple of times you do start to wish they moved a bit faster.
