Agreed. A non-member is not part of the body of the Church and should not vote, sustain or oppose. Very grateful this wasn't during the solemn assembly. 4

If her shout out helps just one person out there, good for her and the rest of our LDS community or outside the faith also. Her comment: "Hey all, name's Crystal and I was the one that yelled at General Conference. It is far passed due that we confront this. If you have any questions or comments or whatever, feel free to leave them down below. Edit: Going to add this here since most people have it. After yelling, I sat down and was within a minute basically told to leave immediately. So I complied and they took me to the security office. They told me that I was going to be arrested. I informed them that their assumptions are not based on the Utah Code and that there was no legal reason to arrest me. After some nonsensical and nonimportant arguing, they let me go and watched as I left church property. They gave me a 1 year ban from church property." And one of the comments made after hers: "I just wanted to say thank you. My step-father sexual assaulted me for months and when the church found out they decided to protect his reputation and get him counseling. He was at conference today. He heard you. What you said made him open his eyes to what a horrible, awful person he was and is. He has finally come to his senses and is moving out of my moms house, and that is all thanks to you. Thank you for having the courage to say something I never could." Me: Maybe her comment wasn't silly after all. Maybe it might have seemed inappropriate, but I'll take that. Or maybe I'm being silly. I'm sad they just didn't leave her alone. Rather than tell her they could arrest her. I think it would have been better had everyone looked the other way. Of course it would have been awkward I'm sure so maybe not good, or good for those that think she was wrong to do that. You don’t think that comment on Reddit just might have been sarcasm or ridicule cloaked as agreement?

You're right. The press isn't going to spill thousands of gallons of ink, expend hundreds of thousands of feet of newsprint, and fill countless hours of airtime, over a quiet meeting with one's Stake President (at least, one the proceedings of which aren't surreptitiously recorded and leaked to MormonLeaks) ... (I don't really consider myself to have a stake in what goes on in organizations in which I no longer participate or of which I am no longer a member. I suppose that's what sets me apart from disaffected, disgruntled ex-members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ...) 2
The Nehor Posted April 2, 2018 Posted April 2, 2018 I found the more obnoxious disruption the sound effects accompanying the temple announcements in the last session. That was a more general lack of reverence by people most of whom should know better. 3
gopher Posted April 2, 2018 Posted April 2, 2018 The disruption was unfortunate. General Conference is a time for Mormons and ex-Mormons to set aside their differences and celebrate together the restoration of the true Church of Jesus Christ, the restoration of the Holy Priesthood, and the awesomeness of having a living prophet. 1

Respectfully: many if not most ex-Mos in my experience see all those things you mention as impostures. They see us as being as misguided--and our leaders as being as nefarious. They see us as Leah Remini sees Scientologists. For the activist ex'Mos, General Conference is a cherry opportunity to attempt to burst the bubble of as many brainwashed victims as possible. At a minimum, it is a chance to broadcast to a concentrated # of members of the Church any real or imagined harm the activists want to underscore--either to give hope to similarly wounded sufferers, or to awaken empathy in some leaders or future leaders, that change might be wrought. Or, failing this, that publicity will bring outside forces to bear on the Church. (Sonething very like this occurred in Australia, against the Church of Scientology, and has been very damaging to the CoS over there). I understand the sentiment--whether directed toward LDS, towards Jehovah's Witnesses (who have their own variant on our Conference), Southern Baptists, or Scientologists. I think it has minimal effectiveness. I never was a fan of Alinskyite tactics, nor did I ecer want to focus my life around being "against" something rather than for something. When I left the LDS Church, I left it to take part in other things. I left the LDS to do their own thing. So: I don't think ex-Mormons usually see General Conference as an opportunity to "celebrate together" anything with beliving LDS.

I just moved to Layton and there is this huge piece of land right next to me that I keep wondering if that's where it's being built. It's a farm and the owner is getting up there in age. It's the perfect spot for a temple too. But I'm not particularly excited about it if that happens. Have you noticed how the audience loves to laugh too. One time I thought they laughed at a moment when what the speaker said wasn't meant to be funny. Now can't remember the speaker. Is that inappropriate? Probably not. Edited April 2, 2018 by Tacenda

At first I thought you were referring to President Nelson when he busted up laughing as he announced the Layton temple. That was one of the highlights of Conference for me. But now I see you mean the rowdies in the conference center. 1

Someone also got vocal when the Richmond VA temple was announced. Yay for them!

We perform ordinances in the chapel. As amazing and awesome as the conference center is, it's just a room built to accommodate a large group of people, isn't it? (Not to take anything away from the conference center. The spirit is strong there).
bluebell Posted April 2, 2018 Posted April 2, 2018 1 hour ago, gopher said: I'm too lazy to insert a "That's the joke" meme here. But that was the joke. I'm excited because youth baptisms will hopefully be a lot easier and more meaningful now. Since both Ogden and Bountiful are so busy, going to the temple to do baptisms is frenetic and difficult. We took our young women to do baptisms last Thursday. We planned the activity in January and could not get in to either temple on the regular Wednesday because they were already booked months out. Even going on a Thursday, we had to hold the activity at 5 in the evening to try to get there before they got very busy. They were busy enough that each girl only got to do 3 names (5 family names that we had brought with us didn't get done at all) because the cue was too long already. A few months ago, my son's quorum went to the Bountiful on a Thursday to do baptisms, ended up leaving at 5 and not getting back until 10 p.m. because of the crowd. They had to sit in the waiting room for 3 hours before even getting to the temple recommend desk. And they still only got to do 3 names. 2

If they put it that close to 89 they will definitely need to make that road a freeway and that is going to make a lot of people who live along there very angry. It's already a disaster at certain times of the day though. Edit-is there enough vacant land east of Smiths? From my memory, that area is really hilly and, aside from the ravines, mostly built on already. Edited April 2, 2018 by bluebell
