With the hipster beard the beard is much more carefully groomed than the typical guy sporting 5 oclock shadow like Don Johnson was still what was hip. Much of the beard ban were social contexts with apostate polygamists (who often adopted 19th century grooming to differentiate from the Church after Heber J. Grant) and the counterculture movement of the 60's. Both of those are pretty dated signifiers. I suspect trying to get people to stop being so scruffy and slovenly is now a bigger deal. And perhaps harder to legislate with broad rules. 2

I was so thankful for hot showers when I got home... and even dull shavers. 1

However, I can see some logic in wearing a shirt. If I were to attend BYU without a shirt, people might think there was a bear on the loose. 1

The ban on wearing beards came from way back in the 60s when the church wanted to distance itself and it's young people from the rebellious attitude of other kids the same age who were wearing beards. It is absolutely unnecessary in today's culture.

I agree. Some men have a hard time with that..but if you can grow a nice one and keep it trimmed...I am loving it.

I don't think anyone has suggested a correlation between facial hair and worthiness. But "worthiness" is not the only basis upon which the Church can promulgate policies and guidelines. Thanks, -Smac I still find it odd that there is a higher standard to take a test than to go to the temple.

There is no facial hair commandment for church worthiness. I think it would inspire more respect for worthiness standards if they were not mixed with a desire to enforce social conformity. I have served in wards and branches where the entire bishopric would not be allowed to go to BYU. BYU even relies on these people to ecclesiastically endorse BYU students.

Some rules are arbitrary and once established will become entrenched for decades. ( ref. priesthood ban ) 2. Life is not fair, get used to it .( ref. some keys are found, some aren't ) 3. We often have to deal with nuance and ends vs means questions . ( ref. early Church leaders/history )
