Suits by Kleinsaucer and Wipf. Probably only Calm will get the reference. Too obscure for even Dennis Miller.

Kleinsasser....

(it is bizarre how many times those names show up together on google)

I predicted the slippery slope arguments from the start.  :-)  Fun that an alum picked up on this as well.

Instead of slippery slope, I think it's a way to keep apostates busy and thinking progress is being made without actually letting them get anywhere.

German spelling is not my strong suit. Please note the subtle connection to Calvin.

If I had half a brain and some graphic skills tonight, I am sure you just provided me with a great opening.

Obedience to to what?

There is no facial hair commandment for church worthiness.

I think it would inspire more respect for worthiness standards if they were not mixed with a desire to enforce social conformity.

I have served in wards and branches where the entire bishopric would not be allowed to go to BYU.

BYU even relies on these people to ecclesiastically endorse BYU students.

Obedience to an honor code that BYU students sign a pledge to obey.

You never heard of it?

You nor any member of a Bishopric don't have to attend BYU. But if you do, you have to comport yourself to its Honor Code.

Having to wear a shirt is also 100% cultural. Time to get rid of all these outdated cultural artifacts.

This past Sunday, our bearded first counsellor was wearing a black shirt. I think we may be ahead of you...

I don't think anyone has suggested a correlation between facial hair and worthiness.

The problem as I've experienced it is that some who've learnt to comport themselves to BYU's arbitrary honour code often then spread the idea that there's a correlation between facial hair and worthiness. Not a fan.

When I was serving with the stake presidency a few years back, we received a letter inviting us to nominate interesting members for local versions of the 'I'm a Mormon' video spots. In the letter, Church leaders actually had to remind us not to overlook men with facial hair as potential nominees.

Those apostates, always focusing on worldly things like caffeine and growing facial hair, I'm surprised God has the patience for their wicked ways.

My branch president in the Philippines would wear a polo shirt with a playboy bunny logo embroidered on it to church.  You guys still have a ways to go...

I don't attend BYU, Haven't had a chance to wear those robes of the false priesthood. :D

Although there is much to be admired by the Honor Code, Some  of the honor code has little to do with honor, and more to do with Conformity to certain cultural (not religious) lifestyle.

Perhaps BYU could have two codes.  an "Honor Code" which deals with things that have to do with "Honor" and a "cultural code" that has  to do with enforcing certain dress and grooming styles preferred by Utah culture.

It is all about obedience.

To the extent that keeping your word actually means doing what you have agreed to do, then I suppose there is a certain sense in which you can think of it in terms of obedience.

I tend to think of it more like keeping a commitment though. For example, when I married my wife, I committed to be faithful to her. Is keeping that commitment a matter of obedience? On some level, maybe, but I honestly don't usually think of it that way, if that makes sense.

Sure, but I bet he couldn't even grow a beard if he'd wanted... :P

Maybe they could make a rule that they have to all wear Mexican sombreros,  It would accomplish the same thing.

Does you wife prohibit facial hair?

My wife will let me go a few days, but then she makes me shave

Well, technically, she doesn't prohibit facial hair, but she doesn't kiss men with facial hair either, so it's sort of a defacto ban as far as I'm concerned. ;)

That was my mum's rule, too. And because of the tiny but genetically dominant Middle Eastern influence in my dad's ancestry, that meant he shaved both morning and night. I still feel bad for him. :(

It is not Utah culture anymore from what I have seen.  Beards are quite popular around here.

Beard is preferred by me for my husband, but his choice in the end.  He enjoys not shaving most of the time, thank goodness.

I will have to ask him is the length is due to my preference, I don't like it very long.
