Even if we don't look at words and meaning of the song it isn't exclusively sung by mormons. It was a surprise to me to find out years ago that the song is sung in other churches, but it showed me it wasn't only an LDS song. I didn't know that. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Am_a_Child_of_God I wonder what other churches sing it. Edited April 15, 2017 by Tacenda

Popular Post Calm Posted April 15, 2017 Popular Post Posted April 15, 2017 " I respect the screaming, tears, crying and panic but when she burst into song I thought (this isn't what I thought but I'll put in words appropriate for MD&D) "good grief really". I find the reasoning inconsistent. 9

If only the freaking critics that surround us day in and day out could be calmed by a gag inducing song. I'd sing it all day. 1

I'm sure the person leaving may have possibly incited something too, but look at our own Jeanne and how she's treated by her father. Not everyone is as you and your wife are. 1

I know where the song came from, but just as songs from other religions have found a home in our hymnbook our songs can find ways into their services as well. I don't know which churches have had "I am a Child of God" sung in their services. One day on this crafting board someone mentioned that their children's group had this song.. I didn't say anything at the time, but it made me smile. Others said they had sung it as well. These were all women who were not LDS. I just don't remember which church they came from.

I thought of Amazing Grace and also How Great Thou Art. But then someone would have maybe been offended by those too? I'll put those in my memory bank and haul them out the next time I am in mortal danger. Wouldn't want to offend anyone with If You Could Hie to Kolob. 3

Oh...I've heard some heartbreaking stories. I know of an older couple who have not been allowed to see their new grandchild (now almost 2 years old!) because they no longer go to church and they were previously very close. I'm sure there's stories from both sides of this though... Edited April 15, 2017 by JulieM 2

You do something that is mean and provocative and then pass out little "oh don't mind me, I was only...." excuses as if that makes it all OK. It is not about who is good or bad. It is about having the decency to know what is appropriate for the group of people you happen to be in. If you go into other groups you don't like and start dropping the pictures in your mind, it might look less like the passive-aggressiveness it most certainly is.

And I know personally many instances where that does not happen. I also know many instances when the person who leaves burns all bridges, houses, and crops, and salts the fields and poisons the wells on their departure. 2

A number of .LDS artists have broken into the greater Christian music world, like Greg Olsen has done with Christian art (Greg Olsen was the number one Christian artist in Canada back in 2001, when I worked at the bookstore a seller came by to pick up some extras and told me he made a point of not telling his customers that Greg was Mormon). They could have come across the song in that way. Hilary Weeks was popular with nonmormons last I heard. She has done a version of I am a child of God. Edited April 15, 2017 by Calm 1

His only statement (that I saw) about other's reactions on the plane was it "did seem to calm them down". Nothing about him feeling that reaction was inappropriate. I think you've misunderstood me; I probably didn't express myself very well. I haven't spoken at all about others reaction to the singing. I've only talked about JC's reaction to it. I've posted about him implying that the woman's reaction to the stress of the flight (her singing) was inappropriate. 3
