My son Filophilisto and I purposely went to the one closest to the convention center for lunch to support them and it was packed. Bullies should be resisted. What made that day yet sweeter for me is that a couple of days earlier, I had been reviled by the mob on the Mormon Defamation Board for announcing on this board my intention to go to Chik-fil-A for lunch. Neither they nor I predicted the extent of the backlash that would transpire on the day of the boycott. 1

It's true that Hitler detested socialism (particularly the Social Democratic party), but in terms of behavior, he was comparable to Communists in terms of tyranny, oppression and human rights violations they inflicted. Yes, it is said that Hitler detested socialism. I disagree. The proper name of his party was: National Socialist German Workers Party (Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei or NSDAP). The only real difference between Communism and Nazism is the racist and nationalist components in Nazism. Hitler and Stalin were both socialists (the USSR was the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics), and Hitler's problem with Communism was simply that he believed it to be a Jewish plot and perversion of socialism (obviously Hitler didn't like it that Karl Marx was a Jew). Hitler and Stalin were both dictators, and either killed or imprisoned those who opposed them. Those who stand for freedom do not do any of this. The entire point of trying to say that Nazism/Fascism is the extreme right of the Republican party and Communism is the extreme left of the Democratic party is to tar and feather those who stand in opposition to dictatorship as "Nazi." Not to get particularly poltical, and all that.

I have not been north of exit 68 for...I don't know...maybe twenty years. You are tempting me. I just tried what they call pho at PDX airport. It was okay. I was glad to try it. I had been curious. Its down here in Vancouver too. Does Vien Dong beat the airport you think?

Pho is the ultimate comfort food. So many good pho restaurants in the Puget Sound area! Many of them are owned and staffed by Koreans. I prefer the ones owned by Vietnamese. Never had airport pho, but tried some in Provo. Uhuh. Not pho me. A real pho place in Provo would make a fortune. Vien Dong was the first and in my opinion the best. It was started by a Vietnamese refugee couple who came to Tacoma with the Boat People back in the late 70s. Being adventuresome eaters, we were among their first "round eyes" customers. Most of the patrons were little Vietnamese guys smoking stinky cigarettes, drinking industrial-strength coffee, and reading Vietnamese newspapers. We had a "Christmas Story" experience in an even more ethnic pho shop next door. We wanted to take the family out for Christmas dinner, but that was only place open...the owners were Budddhists. It was awesome...just like in the movie. No one spoke English. The children of the original couple now run Vien Dong and remember us from the old days. Their daughter plays violin in the Tacoma youth symphony. God bless America! The large bowl is gigantic. They have tempered the contents to better suit the American taste. The original pho was quite.....um.......robust. We have two excellent pho shops near our home, Charm Pho and Pho Puyallup. Both are owned by Vietnamese families, have excellent food, and extensive menus. Charm's mango mousse is the best desert I have ever tasted....even better than Sister Gui's chocolate chip cookies. All their dishes are made fresh from scratch. Puyallup's food is made by mom and dad and is really high class. I would love to share a bowl and some fresh spring rolls some time. I thought of listing you, but sometimes I didn't feel the love from you. In all honestly, I felt like you didn't want anything to do with me at times, maybe because I appeared anti, and you are surely not that. Sometimes I'd make comments on your posts, say about your mother who also had Alzheimer's like mine and I would comment, but never got much back from you. That's the only reason I left you off the stupid list. Or you would have been in there for sure, not that you even care probably.

I have a picture in my mind's eye of what I think people look like... ha! Pho is traditional Vietnamese noodle soup. It has a fabulous savory beef, spice, and herb broth that each family claims is their grandmother's secret potion, or a standard signature mix developed by the chain restaurants. The boiling broth is poured over a huge pile of rice noodles, sliced onions and very thin slices of your choice of raw beef brisket, flank, steak, tripe, Asian meatball, or tendon. You don't have to have the tendon or tripe which are not for everyone. The meat cooks as it sits on your table. When it is served, they give you a plate of fresh limes, bean sprouts, jalapeños, and basil leaves to add to your taste. There are various chili and flavor sauces you can add if you wish. The bowls are huge and not expensive. It's eaten with chopsticks and Asian spoons. The Vietnamese guys hold the spoon in one hand, chop sticks in the other, and alternate noodles and meat with spoonfuls of broth coming from both hands. They have a little dish of personally mixed sauces in which they dip the meat. It's the best comfort food ever invented. All our kids and grandkids love it....even our picky eaters. Well, now I've got to go out for lunch! Edited February 3, 2017 by Bernard Gui 2
