Sky Posted May 19, 2016 Posted May 19, 2016 (edited) The Book of Mormon indicates that certain cities in the new world were taken out for their wickedness. God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. The late Spencer W. Kimball once said that the fate of Pompeii was ultimately because of the wickedness of the people. But can a loving God really be this vengeful and angry? Is there any modern parallel to this? Or is this idea simply an outdated, religious superstition? Edited May 19, 2016 by Sky
Duncan Posted May 19, 2016 Posted May 19, 2016 I dunno, I know where I live every ten years we get hit with something fierce, like 2 years ago it was colder here than on Mars. 1
bluebell Posted May 19, 2016 Posted May 19, 2016 Like you said, if we use the scriptures, then it sometimes happens. I don't think it's often though. 2
Duncan Posted May 19, 2016 Posted May 19, 2016 (edited) It seems like the weather is getting just plain old weird. I am dumbstruck with Fort. Macmurray being evacuated due to fires, Calgary being flooded of all things and other examples. I usually attribute divine disfavour when certain Canadian cities don't win the NHL's Stanley Cup, like it's been 23 years since a Canadian team won the cup Edited May 19, 2016 by Duncan 2

God can use nature to destroy wicked people but I don't think in most natural disaster events God is controlling it. Any moderate earthquake that simply knocks some stuff of the store shelves was not caused by God for example. God is not going to take time out of his schedule to knock some ketchup off a Walmart shelf. Edited May 19, 2016 by carbon dioxide
Rain Posted May 19, 2016 Posted May 19, 2016 One never felt it was a matter of a vengeful God, but the connection of the physical with the spiritual. ThatSomehow damaging the world spiritually damages it temporaly too. Nothing I have read about, but it makes sence to me. We were asked not to assume that the people of New Orleans brought Katrina on themselves by President Hinckley? but I've wondered if was an evil over the whole world connection.

Yes, when he makes no effort to protect his, people from them. And no, natural disasters are "Natural". Also, God is a parent and as a parent he can and will punish his children. He does no do so out of anger as we warns earthly parents not to punish in anger, nor to provoke their children to anger by doing so. My opinion anyway.
rpn Posted May 20, 2016 Posted May 20, 2016 (edited) They can be (which we know from the scripture stories that make it so). But they aren't always (as we know from the story about Jesus calming the sea). Edited May 20, 2016 by rpn
The Nehor Posted May 20, 2016 Posted May 20, 2016 Sometimes and sometimes not. Killing is not a vengeful angry act to God. It is often a mercy. 2
jkwilliams Posted May 20, 2016 Posted May 20, 2016 Seems a bit narcissistic to assume everything is about us. There has to room in this life for randomness and the results of natural processes. 1

So God is pissed at poor third world countries and in 2004 He was very angry with Sumatra?

JAHS Posted May 20, 2016 Posted May 20, 2016 There is the idea that the earth has a spirit. "Nevertheless, all things were before created; but spiritually were they created and made according to my word." (Moses 3:5, 7) "And again, verily I say unto you, the earth abideth the law of a celestial kingdom, for it filleth the measure of its creation, and transgresseth not the law-" (D&C 88:25-26), Suggesting that the earth is alive as also demonstrated by the following scripture: "And it came to pass that Enoch looked upon the earth; and he heard a voice from the bowels thereof, saying: Wo, wo is me, the mother of men; I am pained, I am weary, because of the wickedness of my children. When shall I rest, and be cleansed from the filthiness which is gone forth out of me? And when Enoch heard the earth mourn, he wept." (Moses 7:48-49) So maybe it's not just God that causes physical disasters to happen; could it be the earth itself reacting to the wickedness of man? 3

The earth as a type and shadow of man is a doctrine I personally believe. The earth had a spirit creation, a fall from the presence of God/birth, a baptism, a sanctification, and will have a baptism of fire, return to the presence of God and a Celestial resurrection. The earth according to the Book of Abraham is one of 15 spheres that receive their light from Kolob, just as the 15 Apostles of the Church receive their light from Christ. The earth is much more alive than we are willing to recognize. 1

Building codes are pure evil just like all government regulations.

rodheadlee Posted May 20, 2016 Posted May 20, 2016 (edited) I suggest a reading of 3 Nephi 9 and 10. 3 Nephi 9: 12 And many great destructions have I caused to come upon this land, and upon this people, because of their wickedness and their abominations. 13 O all ye that are spared because ye were morerighteous than they, will ye not now return unto me, and repent of your sins, and be converted, that I may heal you? 14 Yea, verily I say unto you, if ye will come unto me ye shall have eternal life. Behold, mine arm of mercy is extended towards you, and whosoever will come, him will I receive; and blessed are those who come unto me. 15 Behold, I am Jesus Christ the Son of God. I created the heavens and the earth, and all things that in them are. I was with the Father from the beginning. I am in the Father, and the Father in me; and in me hath the Father glorified his name. rodheadlee Posted May 20, 2016 Posted May 20, 2016 2Nephi 6: 14 And behold, according to the words of the prophet, the Messiah will set himself again the second time to recover them; wherefore, he will manifes thimself unto them in power and great glory, unto the destruction of their enemies, when that day cometh when they shall believe in him; and none will he destroy that believe in him. 15 And they that believe not in him shall be destroyed, both by fire, and by tempest, and by earthquakes, and by bloodsheds, and by pestilence, and by famine. And they shall know that the Lord is God, the Holy One of Israel.
