What's Your Current Church Calling?

I'm into my second year now as ward choir director. I didn't think I had it in me, and I almost asked the bishopric member at the time of the call if he was serious.

But I'm having a lot of fun with it and doing things I didn't think I could do, such as arranging music and coaxing folks to come sing.

We're on a winning streak of at least one performance a month since last November and no sign of letting up.

I've found there's an embarrassment of riches in terms of online resources, all free for incidental church or home use. I wonder now why people think they have to violate copyrights when using music at church if there is so much out there that can be had free and legal for the downloading and photocopying. It's very easy to succeed at this calling whether or not one has a budget. The Internet has facilitated the crowd sourcing of Church music.

Also, ward music director in sacrament meeting.

 

And de facto music director and sometimes pianist in priesthood meeting, though I've never been formally called to those positions.

I have the best calling out of everyone!! I get to help an awesome young man who has special needs! He must be a missionary early because he keeps me coming to church. And everyone he meets is a better person for having met him. I feel the leadership that asked me to do this was inspired because he has kept me from feeling totally lost and out of touch with my ward family.

Sunday School president, which can be the laziest calling if you want it to be, or quite a fulfilling experience.

I had that calling on a stake level. A lot of potential to do good, but the organization will run itself if you let it.

Tremendous opportunity for a calling you can magnify beyond belief.  Every member of the ward/stake is a member of Sunday School- so in one area, the SS Pres has keys to minister to everyone.  He could become almost a mini-bishop- visiting members and teaching them and finding out their needs, etc.

 

But of course no one does that.

I hope no one's ever turned down a calling.

When the Stake Pres called me to a time intensive calling he stressed the order of priority:

"Your family,

your work,

your calling.

Don't let anything below get in the way of anything above it."

I thought that was great advice, and somewhat a change in tenor from what I grew up with.

I later asked to be released when the time constraints where too much and putting my wife in too heavy of stress because of my absence.

I agree in every whit with this except to say the Sunday School president does not hold keys.

1st Councillor in RS presidency and Ward Organist ( which I have been in every ward/branch that I have attended for the past 38 years) Who knew so many units could be so desperate  :unknw:

My wife did that for, four years.

Nothing... I was released as WML yesterday as My wife was called recently as YW president and we have a young family

Last year I took my son to school every day.  I found that if I left a few minutes later than usual I would be caught behind a bus which was letting a special needs young man off the bus to go into his home.  I admit that sometimes it annoyed me when I got caught.

 

One day I was having a very rough day and sure enough I was caught behind the bus.  This day the young man had such a grin on his face when he saw his dad.  He could hardly contain his joy.  After that I could just not keep having the bad day I was having.  Some would think it was the Spirit telling me that I should appreciate what I have since others have it so much worse.  That was not the case.  He just had so much joy in him that he spilled out of him, fell off his wheelchair, rolled down the sidewalk and jumped into my car and attacked me!  My joy was full at that moment. 

 

There is no doubt in mind he has a mission here even with his limited physical and communication abilities.

You nailed the young man I help, even though he doesn't speak words he can communicate with his smiles, and he does have bad days too.

He brings our ward together in so many ways, through fundraisers etc. At first I was so afraid I'd do something wrong but feel more comfortable now.

Ward Clerk, and for the past few months, membership and finance clerk as well.  Looking forward to getting a break soon from the complete set of clerking duties when the finally call some assistants for me.  I've been clerk or secretary for the last 15 years.  I guess I just have the face of a clerk!

I guess we are just lucky in our ward, we have about 8 organists and 4 of them are on a weekly rotation right now.  My wife was spared the organist calling for the first time in many years.
