Officially service missionaries (live at home). Observations 3 months in............(1) Still have a ways to go to get everyone to understand that Ward Employment Specialists should be considered an essential and important calling and (2) It doesn't take long to learn that common assumptions made about people who are down and out are so often untrue. It's NOT always just THEIR decisions that brought them to the point where they are at present. [Emphasis added by Kenngo1969].That's true. I can testify to that from personal experience.

A rose by any other name... I remember while in the Army they decided that "Mess Hall" should be called "Dinning Facility". One day I told my guys to fall out for the mess hall. The First SGT, told me "SGT Lee, that is the dinning facility". I told him..."no I think I got it right". His reply, "you are a real class act". I told him, "now that is right". In the O.T.O., I often serve as an officer in the regularly performed Gnostic Mass. Also, in under a year, I'll hopefully meet the minimum requirements for starting a new camp (basically a small lodge, and the equivalent of an LDS branch) within the O.T.O., and I've been thinking about forming one in the college town I live in. In the meantime, I'm also an informal event coordinator in the local Thelemic (not just O.T.O.) community.

I don't have a calling yet because I'm just coming back from inactivity. My Bishop did ask me recently if I was ready for a calling, and I gave a very enthusiastic "yes". I'm hoping to hear something this week. 3

Kenngo1969 Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 (edited) I've had very interesting experiences with callings of late. I was released as Executive Secretary to the Bishop a few months ago. I felt a tremendous sense of relief, which I was expecting, but I was also a little sad, which I was not expecting. Went without a calling for 1-2 months, then was put in as Secretary in the Ward Sunday School Presidency. Did that for about two months and was just starting to get my feet wet when I got a call from a High Councilor who also used to be my Bishop. He said, "I need to see you this evening," and my response was like Noah's from Bill Cosby's Noah routine: "Whattaya want? I've been good! :D" I couldn't figure out why he wanted to see me, and I knew it wouldn't be for a calling, since I'd just received my most recent calling. I said, "OK." He called me in and asked me what I was doing in the Ward. I told him, and then he extended a call to me to be the Secretary in the Stake Sunday School Presidency! But wait; it gets better! When I was sustained, the brother who was sustained as Stake Sunday School President turned out to be the father of the Ward Sunday School President with whom I had been serving! The younger of the two lives with his family in an apartment on the extended family's property. There must have been some interesting dinner conversation in that collective household, I'll tell you: "Son, I need to steal your secretary!" (The son told me that his dad said if the son didn't let the dad have me, he wouldn't have the son and his family over for dinner anymore! ) P.S.: My mission in life is to be a Secretary! Whether they knew of my role or not, I thought it was cool to be a part of the special events in the lives of Ward members by being able to record them.

I'm a bit wary about working in Primary or Youth, but I'll accept whatever is extended. Maybe if I end up in Primary or Youth it's a test for meAs challenging as working with Primary-age children, and with youth, respectively, are, such opportunities can also be fun! There's a lady in my ward who, notwithstanding the fact that she's in her 80s, is a dynamo, and she works in Primary. A few months ago, I saw her leading a few of her young charges down the hall to a drinking fountain, and I said, "Boy, you've got your hands full!" She smiled and said, "But it's fun." Somehow (and I don't know how it happened), this dear sister also became the second-biggest fan of my writing after my mom. Once every month or two, I'll have an Op-Ed published in one of the local newspapers and she always tells me how much she enjoys them. LOL I've served in Primary several times before, and was Nursery Leader in partnership with my husband, and that was really fun. I guess I'm afraid that if I go into one of those organizations right now I'll fall through the cracks. That's a big concern for me just coming back from inactivity. I would like to serve through working with adults for awhile... I know we aren't really supposed to aspire for callings, but one can speculate. I'd love to be a ward missionary, or perhaps be the ward chorister. I've done the latter before and enjoyed it, though it was a bit nerve-racking being in front of the whole congregation.My husband does the ward bulletin for his calling. He has done it for years. He is inactive, as I was, and this calling keeps him kind of in the loop. I think they're afraid to release him because he might withdraw completely.

I have been richly blessed to serve. The strange thing (that is to say, the interesting thing) to me is that, for reasons I don't understand, when I was called as Ward Sunday School Secretary, that felt right, and when I was called as Stake Sunday School Secretary (even though the latter occurred so soon after the former) that felt right. Conversely, I felt horribly inadequate during most of my tenure as an Executive Secretary, but I know (in all humility) that the Lord still was able to use me as His Instrument. I testify that the Lord knows what He's doing, and that He will inspire your Bishop accordingly. I've seen it so many times as I've sat at the elbow Bishops and other leaders who have pleaded for Heaven's inspiration. With respect to our feelings of inadequacy that often accompany callings, I ran across the following this morning in my personal study: "Now, some of you may be shy by nature or consider yourselves inadequate to respond affirmatively to a calling. I had never heard that before, but it speaks directly to my concerns. ☺️I am hoping to hear something on Sunday about receiving a calling. I am anxious to get back into the swing of things because I feel kind of in limbo right now.
Calm Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 (edited) Feel free to call up the RS president and volunteer to go out on visits with her, nice for her to have the company or the visiting teaching coordinator and volunteer as a substitute companion for a new mother or someone whose companion rarely goes with them (assuming you haven't been given your own route yet).
