I used to wear white shirts all week to work; it was just natural to wear the same thing to Sunday meetings because I had so many white shirts. Then work be came much more casual and I stopped wearing white shirts as often.  My attire at church also changed.  I don't think about it anymore and I don't focus on what others wear at church.

I liken the white shirt to people wearing a baseball uniform to a game, the reason you wear that uniform ( I know you think this way there is no shame in it ) is if a player gets hurt and they are looking for a replacement your ready to go into the game at a moments notice, because you have the uniform, hat, and glove.

Now I know you don't have to wear a white shirt to pass the sacrament it is only suggested, but I like to be ready in case they need me to pass or bless the sacrament.

I wear white when required but prefer the color of purity - blue.

My primary colors are one, two, three: red, yellow, and blue.
Each one has a message for you and me. Each is a symbol true.
Red is for courage to do what is right.
Yellow is for service from morn' until night.
Blue is for purity in thought and deed.
These are our colors and this is our creed......

I wear a blue shirt because I think it looks nice. I have been doing it now for over a year. Nice thing is no one has said one word to me about it. Not that it would matter.

I always do, since for me it is an acceptable outward representation (to me as much as to anyone else) of my internal devotion to the Lord. If I'm on vacation and didn't bring one, I don't worry about it. If I had a choice between a wrinkled or soiled white shirt and a colored or casual shirt in better condition, I'd wear the shirt that is in better condition.

Occasionally wear a white shirt, but not usually.

Have heard of certain sisters in the ward commenting negatively (second hand) on my lack of wearing a white shirt, which reinforces my desire to not wear a white shirt.

I don't wear a jacket usually either.

I wear a tie to work every day and usually wear the same things to church.

I know that a strategy used by our priests (when I was a Priest's adviser) to avoid having to bless the sacrament was to wear a non-white shirt.  Amazing that Aaronic priesthood authority is primarily a function of the color of ones shirt.

Went to church in Singapore in a sports shirt once and was warmly embraced by the members and invited to dinner despite my attire.  Tried to embrace that ethos ever since.

I wear a white shirt every week, but not for doctrinal reasons. I also am clean shaven, but again not for doctrinal reasons.

I should note that attorneys appearing in Court dress very conservatively, and about 95% of the time wear a white shirt (the other 5% where a light blue, or light yellow or some other business-casual colored shirt).

Male politicians likewise dress conservatively, and almost always wear white shirts.

Men applying for professional jobs show up for interviews in very conservative dress, and almost always wear white shirts.

There are times and places where people can "make a statement" by wearing unusual clothing. And there are times and places where that statement is inappropriate. A worship service is not a place to "make a statement" by wearing unusual clothing.

Thanks,

-Smac

Why?

Because there are so many here that unless it's spelled out and signed by the first presidency and quorum of the twelve they just don't get it. White is the color of the priesthood. You'll never see the the prophets were a color dress shirt to church. They set the standard and they are who we should emulate always. If the savior wore a suit you can believe he would be wearing a white dress shirt. I've been taught by apostles that white should always be proper dress for priesthood holders... I just follow their lead.

Many years ago, my white-shirt wearing boss at work put the results of a study in all the men's inboxes. Basically, the results of that study said that when men of similar authority made similar remarks or requests for work to be done, the ones wearing white shirts were taken more seriously. The next best results were obtained by men wearing light blue or gray shirts. Bright colors did not fare well, and the worst were colors not seen as masculine such as lavender, pale yellow, or pink.  Cultural, subconscious, or were the men wearing white superior bosses? I don't know, and don't know if a study today would obtain the same results. This was a couple of decades back, right before the business casual look took off. And at the time company dress code was that in the presence of customers, you always wore a suit and tie. That dress code does not exist today at my old company.

But I suspect that at least in socially conservative institutions like the LDS church, that study would still be valid. So no, a white shirt does not guarantee you a spot in the kingdom, but it might help you keep the deacons in line.

Speaking of spiritual matters, it's hard to think of anything more irrelevant than the color of one's shirt. At least it is to me.

On the few occasions that I attend an LDS sacrament meeting I have noticed that most of the men are wearing a white dress shirt as part of their Sunday attire. What do you do?

I will wear white when it matches or when speaking in Church (even then not always) and shirts of a different color when I feel so inclined.
