Glenn Beck's Shockingly Absurd Retelling Of Polygamy History...

I would classify this as a half truth.

It ignores the fact that polygamy was considered a divine mandate at the time. We can only speculate God's reasoning. Also, a simple tour of BY's house in SLC will disprove the Utah era propositions Beck makes here.

I think that is a bit of a stretch.  The only fact about polygamy that he got right is that it was practiced.

Anyone who is complaining here about his ignorance of the facts, who doesn't take the time to write him and share those facts, should quit complaining and pointing out his faults.

Has anyone on here written him about it, and if so, did you receive a response?

Why?

Harder still when it is taught as fact for many many years.

A possible example of the phenomenon known as....whitewashing of church history.

Now, either my seminary teacher, who taught me this same doctrine in 1977, also recently taught this to Mr. Beck, or, the fable is more widespread, suggesting a, top down influence.

I'm sorry, just going through a tough time...dealing with Mama being gone is very hard. Though I am the baby of the family, they are all looking to me to deal with everything...were it not for my wife and kids I would have fallen apart.

Hang in there kid. When my mom died it took a while, and I still miss her. But the pain does lessen, when we remember the love they gave us.

Ok:

#1 - Glenn Beck is off his rocker (as per usual) and completely got the facts wrong.

#2 - Did he really state any false fact that we haven't heard professed in our local wards?

He may be wrong, but all of his errors are pretty common and not unique to Mr. Crazy.

Nope, sorry. There is a greater burden on those who spew their thoughts on television and radio to fact-check. I should not have to do it for them. I am a writer for a company and if I played as fast and loose with the truth as Beck does I would be fired. I will continue to point out his faults and feel no shame about it.

If others want to try and correct him go for it. There aren't enough hours in the day for me to do a rebuttal of all of his drek.

I'm pretty amazed, this forum has managed to be lower than the mormondiscussions boards.  No discussion of what he got right vs. wrong.  Just a lot of sniping on a popular figure who's a convert to the LDS church.

I'd rather listen to a talk show host than pollute my mind with the garbage thrown around on this board.  There is far more anti-Mormon or just plain "embarassed to be Mormon" content in these forums than useful discussion I hoped to find here.  What a waste of time.  I long for the alt.religion.mormon days.  That unmoderated Usenet forum was a treasure of knowledge by comparison.

Pardon my distraction.  Go back to your content-free gossiping.  I won't interrupt again.

He is not an Apostle, but a talk show host. He is entitled to him opinion, but he is a good man...raw at times, but his heart is in the right place, though he does embellish at times too much.

I don't doubt his heart is right, but I was so glad that the Seattle radio station that carried him dumped his show last year.  That way, I didn't have to listen on the odd occasion when I tuned that station in on the way to work in the morning.  I used to enjoy listening to him, but he got old.  Very old.

He keeps going the way he seems to be going, he might be the ideal candidate to take over for whoever is channelling Art Bell nowadays.

I'm a convert to the Church.  Doesn't make me above reproach for making idiotic and worst-of-all wrong statements of supposed fact.  At least when I do it I am not misleading millions of people.  Beck owes it to the public, AND the Church, to get his facts straight before he spouts off.  If he doesn't know, then he should put a sock in it.  If he doesn't know that he doesn't know, then somebody needs to set him straight.  Ignorance is not bliss.

That is what is right: state the facts.

I used to be a fan of GB , until he went all conspiracy on us. I suppose he appeals to a certain demographic that like how he thinks , or doesn't . It seems to be more of a black and white crowd. Just because he is a convert ,it does not require me to accept all his statements as fact, any more than I am obliged to accept financial advice from someone just because they are a member.

On the topic of polygamy , Glenn appears to be reading from a decades old playbook. There have been several excellent publications recently that give a much more complete analysis. Some of the posts have been ad hominum it is true. Unfortunately , when an issue is distorted as badly as Glenn did, well it just causes road rage.

We on the board are now duly chastised, emarkp, we grovel at the feet of your horse.

Oh!  What shiny hooves the horse has!  I wonder if he polishes them?

What the heck is he talking about?

He's stating this to differentiate from weirdo Jeffs who he brought up at the start - that polygamy practiced in the LDS Church wasn't equivalent to how Jeffs treated his followers.

You are just the fount of balance; I don't know where any of us would be without your righteous voice of reason.

Except that Jeffs (not Jeffers as he stated) did call his people in and told them who to marry.

What are you talking about?

There is no need to "balance" fact.

I'm not even very old and I was taught the notion of dwindling male populations hence the need for polygamy.

It is just not factually accurate.

Are you suggestion we should accept the need of the church to balance accurate information with inaccurate information?

I laughed until I cried it was so bad...

[Deleted by Pahoran]

"Most of the men were dead."

Really, Glenn?

And the Reorganites insisted for generations that Joseph had nothing to do with polygamy.

When I read that, I laughed until I cried it was so bad...

"Brigham made it all up."

Really, Luvr?

At least Glenn Beck is not speaking on behalf of any Church.

Nobody has offered him as an authority on any subject.

Glass houses. Stones.

Pahoran

So perpetuating falsehoods is not a big deal unless you represent a religion?

CFR, please.

If "it is taught as fact for many many years" then it ought to be found in some manuals, right?

So where is it?

The most disturbing part of this whole video to me is his claim that the extermination order was the only time anything remotely like this has happened in American history. Uh...trail of tears? Slavery laws? I think what he meant to say was something along the lines of "white" American history.

I was taught it in young men's.

Not sure if it was in a manual.

My dad was taught it as well.

May have just been a New Zealand thing.

That was another really weird part. We don't need to try and make our history of suffering more special by insisting it was unique.

I don't think I have ever heard a piece from beck where he wasn't claiming to be the victim of some kind of unique persecution.
