EllenMaksoud Posted August 17, 2013 Posted August 17, 2013 Admittedly, this is one part of LDS theology that I am not knowledgeable, mostly because I fear doing anything to offend Heavenly Father, the one that has been so loving to me. In my scant 2+ years of exposure to the church, I have come only a little way. This is one where my husband would need to quiet me, and for once I would do it, um if I had one, that is. http://www.upworthy.com/its-ok-to-not-understand-these-pictures-our-brains-werent-built-to-handle-them-2?c=ufb1

thesometimesaint Posted August 17, 2013 Posted August 17, 2013 My idea of Heaven is that the Telestial Kingdom is like at very beautiful room; The Terrestrial Kingdom is like the most beautiful room that you can ever imagine; That the Celestial Kingdom is like a foyer that opens up onto everything. 2
Damien the Leper Posted August 17, 2013 Posted August 17, 2013 KFS heresy. It's about as relevant and credible as the midnight infomercials.
thesometimesaint Posted August 17, 2013 Posted August 17, 2013 KFS heresy. It's about as relevant and credible as the midnight infomercials. I would not call it heresy, but it is not doctrine. You can get some good stuff on those midnight infomercials, but you have to do a lot of research then make wise choices. 2
mfbukowski Posted August 17, 2013 Posted August 17, 2013 The doctrine is that we can become like Heavenly Father. This whole "your own planet" stuff cheapens that in my estimation. We ARE our own universes already and can become more, infinitely. 4

One was held in the very place it happened, in a grove and Joseph is giving the KFD. It was that men will become a God. Word for word right from the discourse. If it wasn't a doctrine why would the church allow visitors from all over the world to see it. I guess Gordon B. HInckley was obfuscating a bit with the Larry King interview. On man becoming like God we have the Bible, and D&C 132.It's the end all be all in this church, if we're being honest. And many join because of this doctrine. It's in our temple, our scripture, conference talks, sacrament meetings, everywhere. It took me several years in the church to even understand this doctrine. It is the underlining of the gospel. It is the gospel just as much as the Saviour and the atonement is. Remember the ladder sermon Joseph gave? IMO, he derives it from Freemasonry. They also go up the ladder to become Godlike.

The sermon is also quite a famous event in Nauvoo history, even if not accepted as doctrine. From a PR/historical perspective it would be awkward not to have it. 1

mnn727 Posted August 17, 2013 Posted August 17, 2013 (edited) To "get our own planets" is only found in Anti-LDS rhetoric, you will not find that statement anywhere in LDS doctrine or lesson manuals. However one does not have to go to the non-doctrinal King Follett discourse to see the principle, one merely has to open their Bible" The ultimate goal is to eventually become Christ-like inheriting ALL the Father has - what exactly that means has been a matter of speculation since it was first written. Psalm 82:6 I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High. Romans 8:16 16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: 17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. Tacenda Posted August 17, 2013 Posted August 17, 2013 That we get our own planets? That we become Gods and probably get a planet. If we believe God is an exalted man, then why wouldn't we become like Him and have a planet. Why do members shy away from this teaching? Worlds without end, comes to mind. Eternal round is what JS mentioned in the KF sermon. We should embrace this and shouldn't be coy. Just because anti's use it? They use it because members are afraid of it getting out there. But it's in there. Enough hidden stuff for once! I can't stand wishy washy anymore, my well being is on the line. Truth is what we need. If it's not true we need our current prophet to say it isn't.
mnn727 Posted August 17, 2013 Posted August 17, 2013 If it's not true we need our current prophet to say it isn't. Our past one already said we don't know a lot about it, thus its officially still in the realm of speculation. 1

mnn727 Posted August 17, 2013 Posted August 17, 2013 And many join because of this doctrine. No one I've ever talked to has joined for this reason. I would doubt there is more than a handful and if this is the only reason they joined my guess would be they would never make it. 1

If you aren't progessing to become like God, what are you progressing to be like? I'm sick and tired of different prophets revelations fading away into oblivion. If we're going mainstream do it. If not, do it.

You're talking apples and oranges here - you made the claim that many people joined for this very reason(getting their own planet), than you say many on this board like the idea of progression....which is it? Calm Posted August 17, 2013 Posted August 17, 2013 Why do members shy away from this teaching? Worlds without end, comes to mind. I don't see members shying away from becoming gods with God through becoming one with him and becoming joint heirs with Christ, etc. It is the speculation of what that means that I see many being more reluctant to get into. They (and I) don't see a need to have all the answers, they feel more comfortable just relying on revelation and leaving the question open at this point until more revelation is received. "Worlds without end" refers to God the Father's dominion...that we might share that dominion is different than us setting up our own shop. I think doctrine definitely supports the first and there is plenty of speculation about the second, but I don't think it is wise to go so far as to say that is doctrinal, though there is no problem with saying that many LDS both past and present see things that way.

If not, do it.You are arguing two different things. No one is saying here (as far as I can tell) that we won't progress to become gods with God. That is different than claiming this means we get our own planets. Protesting this speculation as speculation is not denying eternal progression. Edited August 17, 2013 by calmoriah
