why me Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 http://deseretbook.c...enter/i/5112015Joseph Fielding Smith!I'm very, very, very curious to see what selections from his vast writings the Church has decided the worldwide Church should hear from and take note of today.I think that it will be interesting to see just what will be taught and what quotations they will include. Hopefully, there will be some controversial material in the study book. I think that it would be a plus. However, if it is the same old same old, the critics will be giving a critical insight into the book.
canard78 Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 Thanks for letting us know. Can we break with convention and go with B.H. Roberts in 2015?That would be a lot of fun 2
canard78 Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 Hopefully this quote will be in lesson 1, paragraph 1(attributed but not sourced, anyone have a source):“We should spend our time and give diligent attention to the training of members of the Church. Teachers who are filled with the spirit of the Lord and who are tried and true, should be called to act in this capacity, and those who are not so tried and proved, should not be called to instruct the members. What do we accomplish if we spend our time and means preaching in the world to make converts to the gospel, if we place instructors before the youth in the stakes and wards who destroy the faith in the hearts of the young people in the divine message intrusted to our care?” ― Joseph Fielding Smith 1

volgadon Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 (edited) I can't wait for Ezra Taft Benson. I know a few heads that may just explode. Although I'm a socialist, my head will certainly not explode when we get an ETB manual. In fact, I even met him when I was a child. ETB was a deeply devoted follower of Christ, and despite his inflammatory rhetoric, could form warm, sincere friendships with socialist, such as David Ben-Gurion. Edited August 16, 2013 by volgadon 3
Duncan Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 (edited) Other then the last 4 Presidents of the Church and now Pres. Smith, who else remains to be done? Edited August 16, 2013 by Duncan

canard78 Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 I can't wait for Ezra Taft Benson. I know a few heads that may just explode.I wonder which heads you had in mind?As for me I love a good President Benson quote. This is among my favourites:God, the Father of us all, uses the men of the earth, especially good men, to accomplish his purposes. It has been true in the past, it is true today, it will be true in the future.“Perhaps the Lord needs such men on the outside of His Church to help it along,” said the late Elder Orson F. Whitney of the Quorum of the Twelve. “They are among its auxiliaries, and can do more good for the cause where the Lord has placed them, than anywhere else. … Hence, some are drawn into the fold and receive a testimony of the truth; while others remain unconverted … the beauties and glories of the gospel being veiled temporarily from their view, for a wise purpose. The Lord will open their eyes in His own due time. God is using more than one people for the accomplishment of His great and marvelous work. The Latter-day Saints cannot do it all. It is too vast, too arduous for any one people. … We have no quarrel with the Gentiles. They are our partners in a certain sense.” (Conference Report, April 1928, p. 59.)Ezra Taft Benson in 1972:https://www.lds.org/ensign/1972/07/civic-standards-for-the-faithful-saints?lang=eng 1
canard78 Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 J. Golden Kimball would be even more fun. That would be fantastic. I remember my dad had some talk tapes of a comedian (Golden's grandson?) reading stories of his life. Golden Kimball was also my earliest recalled exposure to swearing.

Calm Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 No problem, glad I could provide. I remembered that program from I don't know how long ago and was glad to stumble across it so quickly on youtube.

Ahab Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 One of these days we're going to catch up and study the teachings of the President of the Church we have now, then.
cinepro Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 I think that it will be interesting to see just what will be taught and what quotations they will include. Hopefully, there will be some controversial material in the study book. I think that it would be a plus. However, if it is the same old same old, the critics will be giving a critical insight into the book. Considering the voluminous amount of writing and speaking JFS did, I suspect we could study his teachings for several years and still never get close to the false stuff that he taught.
ZelphtheGreat Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 Will censor his talks and writings almost as heavily as they did those of Brigham Young. Pres. Smith made definitive statements on many Gospel topics, something the brethren are afraid to do now. I bet a lot of them will not be in the manual.
Damien the Leper Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 I would love a Moses Thatcher or a Hugh B. Brown and especially a Howard W. Hunter manual. IMO, Hunter's presidency was about 100x too short.
JamesBYoung Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 The writings and speeches of B. H. Roberts and J. Golden Kimball, from the first time they officially worked together in TN resolving the aftermath of the Cane Creek Massacre until the early 1930s, would wonderfully illumine the problems all humans face all the time. 1

Hopefully, there will be some controversial material in the study book. I think that it would be a plus. Judging from my experience with an earlier edition of "Teachings of Presidents of the Church -Joseph Smith", I wouldn't get too optimistic. Many of the 'oldies' in the LDS Church have quietlygone out of print or have undergone major revisions. Examples: Gospel Doctrine, The Way toPerfection, Articles of Faith, and Doctrines of Salvation. Regards,JimI am not very optimistic. I think that these manuals were written quite some time ago. But I could be wrong about that. I suppose that what should be remembered is that the words of these prophets need to be taken into the 21st century. Maybe it is not easy to chose what ideas to include for the present time.
Alan Posted August 17, 2013 Posted August 17, 2013 Personally, I can't see the point in the Presidents of the Church series. They all say pretty much the same things and all the lesson headings are pretty much the same. In other words, they are all interchangeable. not only that, but we are told that living prophets always trump dead ones. Actually, my main beef is that the 3 hour progamme is too long and too contrived. I would like to see the church develop a new curriculum where priesthood/relief society and sunday school are amalgamated into a new instructional curriculum based on the scriptures and the teachings of the current prophets and apostles. We could then shorten the whole programme to 2 hours. 2

canard78 Posted August 17, 2013 Posted August 17, 2013 (edited) Calimoriah, Thanks so much..... "you have to pack a lunch", I thought I would die! Part 3... After being discovered in a diner drinking coffee: "Sister, you're the third woman today to mistaken me for that old SOB." And then... A man, seeing him drinking coffee on another day says "I'd rather commit adultery than drink coffee." J Golden replies "So would I..." Thanks Cal, this is bringing back some great memories of road trips. Edited August 17, 2013 by canard78
