So I stumbled across this the other day, and was quite surprised to read about this. Being active LDS, I found it a bit unnerving that someone left the Church and began having visions of Jesus telling her to pray for those poor benighted Mormons. I was wondering what everyone's take is on this, particularly those board members who are Catholic. What would the response of a faithful Latter Day Saint be to this? And finally, isn't it interesting that this is happening right as the Rome Temple is being built?

I know the same argument applies to Joseph Smith but where do you draw the line between nuts and authentic? I dunno Why is one person's visions legit but another's not? Obvioulsy not everyone who has visions is crazy but some seem nuttier then others

My response as a faithful LDS is that if she led many closer to Christ as well as herself, then it was well. But only God can truly judge that.

My mum taught me to assume the best in people. So assume she was sincere in her claims. I'm ok with the idea that Heavenly Father puts people on different paths back to him based on their individual need. I'm not sure whether it's different paths or one path with different stages.

Either way... maybe she really did have visions, really sent by God, and really did help some Mormons get closer to Christ 'out' of the church, rather than being 'in' it. Is that possible?

My first thought was not as christ-like as others. It was along the lines of "Evans: the saint of anti-mormons. Pray to when family is stuck in false doctrine and and mormon-y beliefs. Keep a candle nearby to ward off missionaries." Bad me, bad. Darn my sarcastic, east coast tendency of wanting to snicker at everything.

My second is, well technically her vision wasn't specifically about mormons per se. That's just inferred. As for whether she actually experienced it or not, no idea. I'm not her. She said she did, it effected her life and her desire to help others know Christ. So I figure she probably did. My overall reaction would probably be to shrug and say something along the lines of "as long as Mother Theresa gets to be sainted first." I'm not catholic, only my G-ma is on my step dad's side in any of my family. So it's not like it would have a great personal effect on myself.

With luv,

"Is it possible?"

Well, to put this whole thing into perspective, I wonder if the church would canonize someone who had visions and prayed for the Angelicans, the Baptists or other Protestant groups. How about someone who prayed for Martin Luther to help him to escape perdition, after such a vision.

I think that it is indeed possible that there is an agenda here.

Whether her visions are authentic or not, the catholic church can do what they want with her, I couldn't care less. Now if they canonize her solely to stick a finger in the eye of Mormons than shame on them but I will not call for the catholic church to stop the canonization (unlike what some have called for regarding our temple ceremonies) they may do what they like.

As a non-faithful, but faithful self appointed LDS bodyguard (and maybe a schoolyard bully if I feel up to it)...I got nothing. I'm not sure how to respond this. Interesting story nonetheless.

OK...!

Seriously, let her writings be published, so that her "visions" & "teachings" can be examined to see how they relate to LDS beliefs & culture of her days, then we can say by what margin it really is (or not) from God.

I suspect Bobby's expecting us to be all up-in-arms about the prospect that a (Gasp!) former Mormon :shok: is going to be canonized in the Catholic Church. Here's my response:

:lazy:

Anyone else?

I don't feel obliged to have an opinion on this. Certainly some Catholic saints were, well, saintly, but whether this gal was is a question that doesn't concern me much.

Jesus has identified himself in the scriptures (by doctrinal comparison) as LDS (or ancient equivalent). So I pay no attention to anyone claiming to pray for those benighted Mormons.

I guess I remain unaffected by the event. The story states she focused on "to promote the “Mystical Humanity of Christ,” the idea that Christ is always within us and we should behave always as Christ would" seems a rather fundamental, elementary pursuit of a disciple of Jesus Christ. The fact that she left the Church of Jesus Christ for the Catholic Church and her husband and others followed her is irrelevant. We have people joining the Church everyday from other faiths and we have members who fall away, join other churches also. The fact that she had a vision of Jesus Christ is quite possible.

Oouch...,

play nice!

I always play nice. When two ideas are diametrically in conflict, both can't be right. Wheather our Church is what it claims to be or it isn't. God is not a God of confusion.

Having a "vision" is not that hard particularly when it does not tell you anything you do not already believe. Even a basic mystical life can lead to experiences that seem vision like if you have the right kind of wired brain (I do). It is nothing like revelation or like a real vision. You can tell the difference as no new information is shown or revealed; just a reaffirmation of things you already believe. They give a vague sense of awe but nothing more.

So I believe she is honest when she says she has had visions. I would just add that she is also mistaken.

I think what you describe is called psychosis in the mental health field.

I served my mission in the Philippines where Catholicism is the dominant faith. I can't tell you how many Catholics ridiculed me for claiming that a boy had a vision of Jesus Christ. Now they want to saint someone for claiming the same thing!

After careful consideration, my response is a firm and definite "Zzzzzzzzzzzzz...."

My response is "Meh, it happens. People leave the Mormon Church and join other ones." It's interesting that she is being considered for beatification and canonization, but I don't find it unnerving, and doubt that the Catholics mean to purposely slight our church.

And finally, isn't it interesting that this is happening right as the Rome Temple is being built?

No, not particularly. It's a coincidence.

And where, by a curious coincidence, pogi means "handsome."

Funny, that!
