I see strength in his talk if we use it to search out the will of God but danger if we use it to justify which teachings we choose to follow or ignore (cafeteria belief). There is also danger in blindly accepting anything a prophet says as doctrine without applying some sense and verifying it with God.

Discipleship is an ongoing process of faith and shedding our own biases through humility and obedience to God.

Cafeteria Mormon = someone who has searched the will of God and has learned they don't need to believe or follow a teaching that God told you to believe or follow.

Insignificant observation:

This is the first conference I've seen where almost all the speaker's ties are color coordinated, matching the flowers and motab's outfits as well (clearly, someone sent a memo to try to wear purple...).

As a side note, in Pres. Holland's talk to the Harvard students, in the question and answer period he mentioned that he thought we as a Church held some of the responsibility for the misunderstanding of our doctrine by those not of our faith and that we needed to do a better job...and IIRC he said efforts were being made to do that.

Perhaps this conference has been affected by those efforts in some way.

While my sojourn in this arena was brief, it was long enough to get a sense of how difficult it is. And the talks on forgiveness are so timely for me. I have an ex who I struggle to forgive. I have resolved to do better.

Hi Yaya! Welcome to one of my favorite places. What a super conference! I enjoyed every single minute of it! I sure hope they all live up to this one from here on out! Whether it is the speakers or my willingness to be open to the messages~ I like the effect and pray it just keeps getting better!

Some things that caught my ears.......

1.)the Word GRACE was used more then I had ever heard at conference. I think there is a change occuring in the church where Christ's grace and mercy take up more of our talks and understanding. To more closely resemble Robert Millet's and Brad Wilcox's feelings on the subject.

2.) In an effort to combat the loss of members from anti-mormomism on the internet and coinciding with Elder Marlin Jensen's recent comments - the Brethren are begginning to address these issues. Elder Holland's Safety for the Soul a few years back is an example. This conference was Elder Christofferson's talk on Doctrine and specifically his comment that one leader among the brethren speaking one time on a subject does not constitute doctrine. It takes an consensus of the brethren or multiple brethren touching on the point of view

3.) we have been told explicitly, more then once, to get our butts in gear

What is IIRC???

It's a popular acronym. Stands for "if I recall correctiy." Similar ones are "IMO" for "in my opinion," variations of which include "IMHO" and "IMVHO" where the "VH" stands for "very humble." Also, "AFAICT" for "as far as I can tell" and the old standby, "ROFL" for "rolling on the floor laughing" and its variants.

I believe there's a dictionary of them somewhere.

I only caught a few talks of this conference, but I am really looking forward to watching them individually, reading, and rereading them. I also love the conference music.

We had several amazing talks, and from what I gather from you guys, there are several more that I need to go over and prayerfully take what I can.

We are truly blessed, in so many ways. The time in which we live, the many means by which we can partake of the Gospel online, the Conference, and all good things under heaven.

I notice you're no longer including in your list woman being made from a rib. Are you still under the erroneous impression that the Church teaches that is to be taken literally?

And some of the things in your list I haven't seen mentioned in the Church for a long, long time.

Paraphrasing Elder D. Todd Christopherson - "Just because a general authority, apostle or prophet says something over the pulpit, or writes something, doesn't make it doctrine." I see this as a very important/constructive/positive thing to tell the membership.

I was pleasantly surprised. I especially liked the story Elder Christopherson told of Brigham Young who had spoken in a morning conference session about some soldiers he was upset about and something else and then in the afternoon a GA contradicted him by saying that what BY said this morning was BY talking. This afternoon the Lord would be speaking and contradicted all that BY had said that morning.

I also liked that he said that it is only by personal inspiration of the audience members can they know if what the leader spoke is from God and that is what the early church taught. I certainly know that some of the things BKP has said about gays is not from God.

Is it possible that "these times are a changing"? This talk was much more like the church I was raised in as a child and young girl.

My real takeaway from the talk is that the important stuff is the doctrine of Christ. The simple, profound truths Christ taught. The atonement. This doctrine hasn't changed much over the years, right? I felt like there was a subtext of "Anything not the doctrine of Christ is actually less important. Use your own judgment and discernment."

This talk could actually make me consider coming back to the church someday.

I too have struggled with things in the church, though I have remained, I hope as another pointed out that you might consider coming back. IM me if you want I have a great personal story along these lines that would be worth your hearing
