cdowis Posted November 8, 2013 Posted November 8, 2013 (edited) I have become really fascinated with "Fall of Eagles", a thirteen episode account of the events surrounding the beginning of "The Great War" (WW I). This has some interest to LDS because it was part of the fulfillment of the Civil War prophecy, and its history is virtually unknown to most of us. It is a very complex story, but masterfully dramatized by the BBC, and can be found on youtube. Episode 1http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQ7qYZx8j3E This is my second viewing. Calm Posted November 8, 2013 Posted November 8, 2013 My kids and I watched The Neverending Story on TV last night. I had forgotten how much I love that movie! The book is great if you get a chance to read it...by Michael Ende.
altersteve Posted November 8, 2013 Author Posted November 8, 2013 Finally watching Thor: The Dark World tonight with a friend I don't get to see often. Should be a great time.
bluebell Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 The book is great if you get a chance to read it...by Michael Ende. It's one of my all time favorite books. The one I had was typed completely in red and green ink, just like the book Bastian steals is described. I loved that!
altersteve Posted November 9, 2013 Author Posted November 9, 2013 (edited) I thought Thor: The Dark World was okay. Loki isn't in the film very much, but he's by far the best part, with the perfect mix of humor, charm, emotion, and a little bit of menace. Tom Hiddleston's performance as Loki is hands down the highlight of the entire movie (though the funniest bit features Loki, but not played by Hiddleston, and you'll know what I mean when you see it -- it had half the theater cheering). And I find interesting the fact that he's the strongest character in the film who carries the most gravitas, because the film doesn't revolve around him and the story wouldn't change one bit without him; yet at the same time, without him the movie would probably be pretty boring, almost joyless. The scenes without him aren't very much fun. Natalie Portman again isn't given much to work with, despite being a talented actress, but I did enjoy Kat Dennings' expanded role from the first film. And Erik Selvig, played by Stellan Skarsgard, is reduced to mere comic relief here -- while certainly funny, he doesn't add anything else to the story whatsoever. Overall, not a bad film by any means, and certainly a lot better than the first movie, but not nearly the strongest entry in Marvel's movie canon. I think it suffers from an overabundance of complexity and an underdeveloped villain, and the plot twist at the end isn't very surprising. And Chris Hemsworth almost looks bored half the time. The movie is still worth seeing, though, even if it's just for Loki. He's magnificent. Edited November 9, 2013 by altersteve

The scenes without him aren't very much fun. Also, there's one very unexpected cameo appearance that had half the theater cheering.Which film was better, Thor or Ender's Game and why? Sounds like I'm giving you a quiz, huh. I ask because my husband and I were wanting to see Ender's Game but the couple we were going with wanted to see Thor more. Ended up we didn't go at all because my husband started getting worse with his cold. I think I already know the answer though.
altersteve Posted November 9, 2013 Author Posted November 9, 2013 Ender's Game is way better. I edited my review of Thor after thinking about the movie a bit more. My thoughts in a nutshell: Tom Hiddleston is phenomenal, but everything else is just kind of meh. 1
altersteve Posted November 9, 2013 Author Posted November 9, 2013 I still think Thor is worth seeing at some point, though. But skip out on the 3D. It doesn't add anything.
Deborah Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 (edited) I have to agree with altersteve on Thor: the Dark World. Except that Chris Hemsworth was worth watching just because he is such a hunk. And his muscles..... But the story wasn't as good as the first Thor. Yes, that last scene with Loki was priceless. Saw the trailer for the new Captain America. It looks good and I really enjoyed the first one both for the story and the characters. Edited November 10, 2013 by Deborah
Ron Beron Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 (edited) I loved the music/scene when they came upon the Sirens... GG-Me too... especially the horny toad part. Edited November 10, 2013 by Ron Beron 1

bluebell Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 I'm anti-3D Me too. It just feels like a scam to get more of my money without doing anything more for it. 1
Duncan Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 (edited) My kids and I watched The Neverending Story on TV last night. I had forgotten how much I love that movie! You slay me. I vividly recall watching that movie in Primary when it came out on VHS, it seemed that we sat on that cold hard floor FOREVER! because the movie was appropriately named, it's neverending!!!!!!!! altersteve Posted November 12, 2013 Author Posted November 12, 2013 (edited) I'm really excited for a lot of movies in the next month and a half or so: Catching Fire, Frozen, The Hobbit, Anchorman 2, Walking with Dinosaurs, Saving Mr. Banks, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, and The Wolf of Wall Street all look fantastic. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty? I would see it just to see what they have done with it since I saw it in the late 40's early 50's, starring Danny Kaye, and I think Virginia Mayo... of course it was a comedy, and pretty funny IIRC... GG 1
Rivers Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 (edited) The DVD for Man of Steel came out today. I just bought it and watched it. I think I might be obsessed with super hero movies. Edited November 12, 2013 by Rivers
Mola Ram Suda Ram Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 I plan on getting in 3D. I did watch Thor Friday. I enjoyed it quite a bit. The 3D was really good on that show too.

GGThe remake is directed by and stars Ben Stiller. It looks like it's going to be more of a drama than a comedy, though. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGWO2w0H2V8 I love the song that plays in this trailer too.
Grudunza Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 Saw Gravity at IMAX 3D recently. Normally I wouldn't want to see a 3D version of a film, but I'm glad I did in this case. No story to it, really, but an amazing visceral experience. Also watched Ghostbusters on Netflix the other night, which my girls (11 and hadn't seen before. Didn't hold up that well for me.
altersteve Posted November 13, 2013 Author Posted November 13, 2013 GHOSTBUSTERS IS ON NETFLIX?! *disappears for a couple hours*
Gohan Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 I got to see Ender's Game last night. Although I was a little bit disappointed in what I felt was a lack of character development for Ender - things felt a tad rushed - I was very pleased with the movie overall.

The original had serious undertones involving spies, etc., but with Danny Kaye it was mostly a comedy as he became involved with the spies... GG
Deborah Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 Danny Kaye was so great. Funniest movie ever was the Court Jester especially the "Pellet With The Poison" routine. 1
