Lady_Lullaby Posted October 7, 2013 Posted October 7, 2013 I started to watch it but I did not wish to watch sad movie. Did they finally get together? They did!
altersteve Posted October 10, 2013 Author Posted October 10, 2013 (edited) What !!! I did not hear swearing. I was too busy screaming !!!! Does going to watch it in 3D even though I now know of swearing, even though I did not hear it make my actions direct disobedience? Indirect disobedience??? Someone give me the answer I want because I want to see it, really !!!Just follow the Spirit. If you feel it's okay for you to see it, then do so. If not, then don't. Today I saw Rush, a biographical drama about a rivalry between two Formula 1 race car drivers in the mid-1970s. And my goodness, what a movie. Chris Hemsworth (better known as Thor) is a terrific actor, and this may be the best performance he's ever done. Daniel Bruhl is fantastic as well. Both of them churn out Oscar-worthy performances here, and the real-life characters they play are complex, as is their relationship with each other. Plus, the racing sequences are absolutely exhilarating and the cinematography is some of the best I've seen in a film like this. Honestly, this is probably one of the best movies I've seen all year, along with The World's End. Please go see it, pronto, but be wary of language, some nudity, and a very intense sequence in which a character is horribly burned in a car crash. The burns shown on his face afterward are graphic and disturbing. But the movie is ultimately very moving and a testament to the power of determination and healthy competition, as well as to the dangers of letting fame and fortune get to your head -- and how it can destroy your relationships if you're not careful. A wonderful film. Edited October 10, 2013 by altersteve
Garden Girl Posted October 11, 2013 Posted October 11, 2013 (edited) I'm anxious to see Captain Williams starring Tom Hanks, a true story of Somolia pirates boarding a ship and holding the crew for five days, hoping to get ransom... I understand it's very exciting... GG edit to add: The real Capt W. was interviewed on TV this morning... he said the film was pretty accurate and they did a very good job at portraying the action/emotions of the crew... Ron Beron Posted October 12, 2013 Posted October 12, 2013 Just saw "Gravity". Wow, Wow. Wow!!! Sandra Bullock was perfect, as was Clooney. This was nearly a perfect movie.

Ron Beron Posted October 12, 2013 Posted October 12, 2013 Okay, that makes two must-sees for me... Gravity and Captain Williams... GGYou won't regret it...unless you eat too much popcorn. Also, see it in 3D.

Ron Beron Posted October 12, 2013 Posted October 12, 2013 Do you still have to wear those funny glasses, or has tech improved... GGThe funny glasses involve a new technology so it isn't green and yellow lenses. I think they use some sort of polarization. Not super noticeable after awhile.
altersteve Posted October 13, 2013 Author Posted October 13, 2013 If you get tired of the 3D, close one eye while wearing the glasses to give your eyes a break. It will make the image appear 2D.
jkwilliams Posted October 14, 2013 Posted October 14, 2013 "Gravity" does look like it has amazing cinematography but I honestly can't get excited about someone falling through space for 2 hours even with great acting. If there is something more to it let me know. I really have enjoyed Alfonso Cuarón's films. "Y tu mamá también" was as brilliant a statement on modern Mexico as any I have seen, with "Amores Perros" a close second. He even made a decent Harry Potter film. I'll probably see it sooner or later, not because the subject is all that interesting but because I like his films.
altersteve Posted October 14, 2013 Author Posted October 14, 2013 (edited) Watched Tangled today. What a glorious movie. Also gonna take a girl to see Insidious: Chapter 2 tonight (my second time seeing it, her first, so this should be fun). Edited October 14, 2013 by altersteve

If there is something more to it let me know. The falling thru space part isn't very long at all. It's a different kind of movie than I've ever seen but I loved it. So simple but amazingly intense.

Garden Girl Posted October 16, 2013 Posted October 16, 2013 Well, I just got home from seeing "Captain Phillips" starring Tom Hanks... (I previously called it Capt Williams, but it's Phillips). What a movie!! Makes the heart pound in parts...I heard Tom Hanks on David Letterman tell that when they were casting, they went to one of our eastern states like MA or Conn where there is a large Somali poplulation and held an open casting call. Several hundred Somalis showed up and were cast in the various roles. Great choices! Menacing as Somali pirates...Tom H. did a wonderful job as Capt Phillips... in fact I thought all the cast was terrific. I particularly liked the shipyard scenes when they are loading their cargo containers... one doesn't normally get to see a shipyard like that, and we sometimes forget just how important the shipping industry is... Anyway, terrific film... GG 1
Garden Girl Posted October 20, 2013 Posted October 20, 2013 I just got home from seeing "Gravity." I enjoyed it, but was somewhat disappointed... not a lot... but I didn't feel the intensity, or suspense that I felt with Capt Phillips...In fact, I had to leave the BYU - Houston game just as it was starting the 4th quarter (if you can believe it) because of starting time... and as I was watching Gravity I remember thinking I was sorry I missed the game ending for the movie... but I was afraid I'd miss Gravity on the big screen. Yes it was a good movie with terrific special effects... although it would have made me nauseous if I had seen it in 3D... and I'm glad I saw it in the theatre vs renting it on DVD. Anyway, Imagine my absolute delight to get home and find that BYU won the game 47 - 46, handing Houston their first loss (they were 5-0 coming into their game with BYU). Go Cougars!! GG 1

Go Cougars!!GGI felt the same way you did about this movie, it was nowhere near as intense as I thought it would be. I saw it in 3D! And believe it or not, my first time, so kind of fun that way. I wonder if that was Sandra Bullock's real hair or a wig. The ending left me hanging, maybe they need a part two of some kind. 1

Well, the last thing she was able to communicate to Houston/NASA was her location, with a response that they were sending a rescue... so I'm assuming they would find her... but it was sort of an ambiguous feeling... That was probably a wig as she normally wears her hair longer. GG
Deborah Posted October 20, 2013 Posted October 20, 2013 I saw Gravity finally as well. I have to agree with GG. It was visually amazing but really kind of duh. One man in the theater fell asleep. I'm looking forward to the new Thor movie. That's what I like in theater movies. Pure escapism.
altersteve Posted October 20, 2013 Author Posted October 20, 2013 The new Thor film looks awesome. I didn't really like the first one very much, but I still somehow get a random urge to watch it every once in a while.
Ron Beron Posted October 20, 2013 Posted October 20, 2013 (edited) Thor in the classics was nothing like they present him in the movies. The have a ninja type Asgardian?? A black Heimdall? Even Thor himself looked different.Notice the goat driven cart. Edited October 20, 2013 by Ron Beron
Deborah Posted October 20, 2013 Posted October 20, 2013 I like Chris Hemsworth's vision of Thor. I like Chris Hemsworth period.
Garden Girl Posted October 20, 2013 Posted October 20, 2013 I like Chris Hemsworth's vision of Thor. I like Chris Hemsworth period. I haven't read the legend of Thor for years, but remember always getting a sense of Thor being large and muscular, and wielding his hammer... GG
