Tacenda Posted September 28, 2013 Posted September 28, 2013 Hi Ron...The other day I mentioned the music score of "The Vikings"... stays with you for days...Recently there are several movies that had musical scores that touched me... one, "Absolute Power" contained music scored by Clint Eastwood (in addition to his starring/direction). He and his son, Kyle, are talented composers and have scored several of his recent movies (Kyle had a brief appearance in "Bridges of Madison County" playing bass as part of a jazz combo in this small club). Not only is Eastwood a talented actor, director, and composer. he is also a very talented artist.Sometimes I wonder how one person can have so much talent... another was Doris Day... she was/is pretty, could sing, and was actually a very fine actress (both comedy and drama). It's 7:30 a.m. as I sit here typing... my cat, Bob, gets me up every morning at 6:00 (he's so accurate who needs an alarm clock) by walking back and forth across my chest, and butting me with his head... he's ready to start his day... My computer sits on a table next to a large window, and I'm looking out at the stand of Cedar trees... now devoid of all but a few leaves, their trunks and branches standing stark against the gray morning sky. It's raining and the wind is blowing... This is when I feel a melancholy that makes me wistful. Sigh... guess I'll choose a good movie to watch...GGLaying in bed by my little dog. Fall has arrived but feels like winter, don't want to get out of bed, but have too much to do....really just want to watch a movie too. 2
strappinglad Posted September 28, 2013 Posted September 28, 2013 If you are feeling like a slacker today ,may I suggest " Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure " .
Garden Girl Posted September 28, 2013 Posted September 28, 2013 There's a movie playing now on Encore that is a favorite... "Open Range" starring Robert Duvall and Kevin Costner... I've seen it several times and never tire of it... the musical core is beautiful... but additionally, it is one of the most beautifully filmed movies I've seen... the locations are spectacular. I think some are in Canada, and some in Montana... but beautiful scenery and skies. Another that is beautifully filmed is "Broken Trail" starring Robert Duvall and Thomas Haden Church... again, beautiful scenery... both have good storylines, played out against the most beautiful backdrop, i.e., nature... breathtaking... GG
thesometimesaint Posted September 28, 2013 Posted September 28, 2013 Watched the "Life of Pi" last night. Cinematography was outstanding. The take away message for me was which story do you want to believe? 1

ERayR Posted September 28, 2013 Posted September 28, 2013 Robin Williams I have seen several of his movies but can't give high marks to any of them. I tend to agree with Roger Ebert's assessment of Dead Poets Society. http://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/dead-poets-society-1989bmp

altersteve Posted September 30, 2013 Author Posted September 30, 2013 Speaking of cowboys, I watched Shane the other day. What a wonderful film. I love classic westerns.
Deborah Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 I am finding there are more good shows on TV now than in the theaters.
Tacenda Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 I am finding there are more good shows on TV now than in the theaters.Do you care to share, I'm not seeing much, but I watch a lot of reality stuff. I was hoping to like the new Michael J. Fox series, but was disappointed. .
altersteve Posted September 30, 2013 Author Posted September 30, 2013 (edited) There are some great things on TV. I don't religiously follow many TV series, but I've seen every episode of How I Met Your Mother, and I'm halfway through season 4 of Breaking Bad. Edited September 30, 2013 by altersteve

My kids that have moved out were talking it up, so I had to see what all the hoopla was about. "How I Met Your Mother"? I'll check that out. As long as they don't conflict with "The Voice" or "Dancing With The Stars". Edited September 30, 2013 by Tacenda

Ron Beron Posted October 1, 2013 Posted October 1, 2013 Speaking of cowboys, I watched Shane the other day. What a wonderful film. I love classic westerns. As a juxtaposition of this film watch Eastwood's "Pale Rider". In Shane the hero, although he could take the woman whenever he wants instead protects the family and leaves. In Pale Rider, the preacher sleeps with the man's wife and then protects the family, the girl and then leaves. One scene perplexes me when the bad guy at the end says, "You?!" What did he mean?
altersteve Posted October 1, 2013 Author Posted October 1, 2013 (edited) I had never watched "Breaking Bad" until last night when I watched the big fanale, I kinda went backwards. My kids that have moved out were talking it up, so I had to see what all the hoopla was about. "How I Met Your Mother"? I'll check that out. As long as they don't conflict with "The Voice" or "Dancing With The Stars". Breaking Bad has some of the best writing I've ever seen on screen. Absolutely masterful storytelling. It's a pretty dark story, though. The main character, Walter White, is not a guy you want to root for, but you become so invested in him and you relate to him in some rather disturbing and startlingly eye-opening ways so well that you can't help but stay on his side. But almost nothing he does is good at all. He starts out with good intentions, but still, what he's doing is completely and utterly wrong. It's a fascinating show. It really gives you something to talk about after every episode, and Bryan Cranston's performance as Walt is nothing short of phenomenal. What a series so far. No spoilers, please. Now, How I Met Your Mother is a completely different kind of show. It's a sitcom, but it's one of the cleverest, most intelligent, and funniest sitcoms I've ever watched. There's some sexual dialogue and several portrayals of one character's womanizing, but that character matures and settles down throughout the course of the series (and funnily enough, Neil Patrick Harris, the actor who plays that character, is gay in real life), and it's nothing worse (and probably tamer) than what you'd find in a PG-13 movie. It's a fun show. Edited October 1, 2013 by altersteve
Garden Girl Posted October 1, 2013 Posted October 1, 2013 Maybe I'll have to tune in to Breaking Bad... I've seen it advertised and noticed the lead character looked interesting... GG

Garden Girl Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 Isn't that pretty much half the movies he's was in for a couple of decades, lol?Eastwood got better with age... and better roles and scripts... and, he proved to be a talented director in his later years. GG 1
