The director has said that he's not trying to appeal to a Christian audience. He tried to make it as dark as the story in the Bible. It could be PG-13, but knowing his previous work, an R rating won't surprise me.

Finally! Something wholesome on tv, the remake of Sound of Music with Carrie Underwood. Hope y'all tune in, it's excellent so far.

Just got back from watching Out of the Furnace. It wasn't amazing, but it was great, and the cast is outstanding. No movie with Christian Bale, Casey Affleck, Woody Harrelson, Willem Dafoe, Sam Shepherd, and Forest Whitaker could disappoint too badly. It's also very thrilling; had me leaning forward with suspense at times.

My brother in law, a professional actor, loved the singing, but felt Underwood's acting was less than sterling.  Was that the case?

Singing was amazing!  Carrie has a great voice that matched or beat Julie Andrews.  But this was probably her first acting job, I would guess.  So I'll give her a break.  The actor that played the part of Mr. Von Trapp didn't seem to gel well with Carrie.

Well people... today is definitely going to be a movie-watching day...  We have been experiencing verrry cold weather here on the Oregon coast with predictions of possible snow.  So yesterday I planned on going to the store today... but when I woke up... Whoa!!  Winter wonderland, clear down to the waves.  It's beautiful.

I've got enough food for myself indefinitely (yay food storage)... but I need food for the beast (Bobbie-cat) as I only have a couple days for him.  It's still snowing lightly...  Looking out my windows is like a picture postcard..

So, it's to the film library I turn... in the mood for oldies but goodies... think Mildred Pierce, Rosemary's Baby, My Darling Clementine, Peyton Place, Ten North Frederick, Gentlemen's Agreement... that ought to get me through the day/evening...

I'm still in my jammies (9:30 a.m.) and think I'll change into another pair of flannels and snuggle down in my big chair and just relish wonderful movies...

An ocean view? That sounds wonderful. :)

I was remebering an oldie the other day with Marcus Welby, or the guy that played him and can't remember the actress that played opposite him. But in the movie they look beautiful and handsome to one another, but in reality they aren't, just plain. Do you know by chance the name of this oldie but goodie? My mom and I really got into watching these oldies, I'd love to see it again!

Yes... It's titled "The Enchanted Cottage" and is a wonderful story.  Starred Robert Young and Dorothy McGuire...

Oh, I no longer have an ocean view from my house... I have to walk to the end of my driveway and look to the end of my street to see the ocean. But if its snowing at sea level, it's on the beach here.

In the home that my husband and I built for our retirement, we had a lovely ocean view through the pine trees.  But alas, had to sell that, but love my little cottage...  I love to walk to the end of the street and just look at the waves breaking on the shore...

Starting to snow again... beautiful...

I love the Enchanged Cottage. I just got back from seeing "The Book Thief". Very moving a and so well done. It shows what it was like for the ordinary people of Germany under Hitler.

That is probably why I thought of this movie, GG's cottage!!!  I just got back from Ender's Game.  It seemed long, and seemed more geared to a younger audience, but what do I know.  What's interesting is that being a sub in the school district I read a lot of these books turned movies with the classes but never the whole book.

GG, speaking of old movies, did you ever see "Portrait of Jennie"? Another enchanted movie with an exquisite Jennifer Jones.

Yes, I did... and wasn't it Joseph Cotten that painted her?  It's been so long ago that I saw it that I forget the full gist of the story, but remember that it was a good one...

Yes, it was Joseph Cotton. As it turned out she had already been dead when he met her and painted her.

Oh that one....that was great.  I never saw it from the beginning.  Will have to keep an eye out for it.

Just watched 12 Years a Slave. It's masterfully acted and seamlessly directed, but very difficult to sit through. It's been a long time since a movie shook me up like this one did; in particular, a scene in which a slave is forced to brutally whip another slave nearly brought me to tears. Once the credits began rolling, the entire audience was eerily silent, and it took some time for everyone to gather their bearings and leave the theater. This is one of the best films of the year and definitely a must-see, but be prepared for an often brutal cinematic experience that will likely stay with you for quite some time afterwards. I'm probably not going to see it again any time soon.

Altersteve... I had some of the same feelings when I watched Amistad...

I'll  tell you about a couple of movies I watched Saturday, and one I did not watch tonight...

Saturday, I did as planned and watched movies as I snuggled in my jammies under the fleece throw in my big chair (snow/cold)... I watched several including Secretariat (the famous triple crown winner), and one starring a very beautiful Kim Novak titled Jeanne Eagles (broadway star).  I don't think Novak was lovlier than in Jeanne Eagles, who rose quickly to fame and then died suddenly at age 39 in what is thought to have been an accidental mix of alcohol and prescription drugs.

But the movie I rented this afternoon that I turned off was titled "The Conjuring."  It is a true story based on cases of a well known husband/wife team of paranormal investigators.  The case in question was about a family that moved into a big two-story older home... strange occurences started to happen...

Now I know there are many here who dismiss things of this nature, but I don't even though I do believe most cases can be explained as natural phenomena...  But there are some cases that just can't be explained away.  Once I started watching it I knew I'd have to turn it off... I'm funny (strange) about these types of movies, particularly since this one is based on a true case.  I don't want to open myself to these types of ideas, influence, or bring them into my home... so... I turned it off.

I have watched the movie and it does have some accuracy, but it is not quite like the movie suggests.  For example, the doll that is shown at the beginning is not quite as malevolent as shown, but in reality looks like a Raggedy Ann doll.  The Warrens have made a career out of the supernatural.  They may or may not be correct in their assumptions, but the movie was scary.

Philomena is terrific. I knew very little about the movie before I saw it, hearing only that it was supposed to be good, and I wasn't let down. Steve Coogan and Judi Dench both give Oscar-worthy performances in this very honest, very real, and very forthright drama film, perhaps one of the best movies of the year. I loved every minute of it. After about 20 minutes, I was afraid the film would be told mostly through flashbacks, but just as that thought began to come to my mind the movie slowly pulled away from that. I predict a Best Picture nomination for this movie at the Oscars next year, as well as at least a Best Actress nomination for Dench. The performances given by her and Coogan, and the chemistry they share, are the best things about this movie.

Just saw Notting Hill with Hugh Jackman and Julia Roberts.  I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed that movie and the nuances of it.  If anyone has the time this is a good one!  Laughs, tears the whole shebang!

I really liked that movie too... Hugh Grant and Julia did terrific  jobs... I loved the last scene in the park...

The Hobbit was fantastic. So much better than the first film. I think Legolas is the best part of the movie, with Orlando Bloom giving a great performance as a cockier, slightly angrier, and slightly more emotional Legolas than in The Lord of the Rings -- and there's a chase scene through a river involving Legolas that is one of the best action/fight sequences I've seen in awhile. It's the most exciting and perhaps funniest scene in the movie. Smaug, and Benedict Cumberbatch's vocal performance as the character, is also phenomenal, and possibly one of the most memorable movie villains to come along in quite some time. Tolkien purists will be disappointed by the liberties taken with the source material, and it's overlong with has too many subplots, but this is an exciting, often exhilarating, full-blooded adventure film. I can't wait to see it again.
