Garden Girl Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 (edited) Aha! So there are disadvantages to living on The Beautiful Oregon Coast, after all! Maybe one or two... Ha! GG edit to add...Today is another crisp sunny day, Ken... the sky is clear and blue... the type of day when the water is a beautiful blue with the waves sparkling as they crash on the shore... so I'm sitting here typing and looking out the window... Bobbie-Cat is lying on my table between the keyboard and the screen (he loves to watch the cursor and tries to get it)... I have some errands I can run down in Newport 20 miles to the south. So I just decided it's such a beautiful day I'll make the drive down, which goes along the coast with views that go on forever... So that's what I'm going to do today... Then tonight BYU Men's basketball will be on... they play San Francisco... televised on ESPNU... later, perhaps I'll find a good movie to watch... Edited January 16, 2014 by Garden Girl 1
Garden Girl Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 I rented "Enough Said" ... a delightful romantic comedy starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus and James Gandolfini (the star from "The Sopranos" who passed away last year)... a very warm, charming story with characters we can relate to... GG
EllenMaksoud Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 "Just Like A Woman", available on Netflix is a true chick flick.
Tacenda Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 "Just Like A Woman", available on Netflix is a true chick flick. I was just about to order Netflix, until I heard their prices are going to rise big time. I guess Netflix was too good to be true while it lasted. Hopefully this won't take place real soon and I can order it and catch up on some movies or watch real old ones, cable and Redbox just don't do enough that way.

Tacenda Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 (edited) A few years ago I would have skipped any and every R show out there. Now I'm open to them as long as they're meaningful, have substance and are human centered. The new movie with Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts is just that, I almost walked out and thought it was too much, glad I stuck it out. But it's not for everyone. The movie, August, Osage County. You thought your family was disfunctional.....Eta: no sex scenes too!! Edited January 18, 2014 by Tacenda
Deborah Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 Has anyone seen the new Jack Ryan movie yet. Thinking of going Monday.

From the movie trailer I can get the gist of the story, at least as the trailer can be portrayed on TV... but you even thinking about walking out is something... GG

GG No sex scenes, it just seemed like another one of those movies that I've seen with a bunch of women who are sisters and their mother, there have been several through the years...but this is different from those by far. If you can stand some language and body part wording...it was quite the movie, with the best acting I've ever seen with both Julia and Meryl. I guess the reason I wanted to walk out is because "Frozen" was also playing and was starting 30 minutes later, and I've heard it was awesome. Just thought the movie was just another movie like I described. But it isn't a movie that one should sit through if they don't like potty mouths or women who swear, too bad they can't make the movie work without that.

Well, guess I'll have to pass on this one... and what a shame. You'd think this one wouldn't be so filled with language, being mainly more mature women and all. Why do they have to do this...is this what women talk like in real life if they aren't affiliated with a faith, or at least spiritual for the most part? Is this real life... have I been so "away" from the real world up here in my little corner of the Pac Northwest and inside of the Church influence that I didn't realize things had changed so... although I do remember being taken aback just before I retired 24 years ago when I was walking behind several girls as we walked through the Student Union at San Fran St Univ and hearing them talk... just their everyday conversation was peppered with profanity... and these were nice looking girls that seemed like "normal" young women students... that was my first real inkling that things had changed since I started 30 years previously...And so movies today are reflecting how women really talk??? altersteve Posted January 19, 2014 Author Posted January 19, 2014 It's just how people talk in general, sadly. Even at my job at a movie theater in Utah County, the dead center of Mormondom, I hear profanity quite often -- mostly from co-workers, but also from customers sometimes. I've been known to drop one of those four-letter words every so often myself, but it's rare and I'm making an effort to stop. I just hear it at work (as well as in movies, life in general, etc.) so much that it's not even distracting. And I feel a little bad about that...

And I feel a little bad about that...Usually there's no excuse to swear, but in this movie I guess even the mild swear words wouldn't show the extent of the pain this family is feeling. I can't believe I'm saying what others have said about a movie needing the swear word in. But in this movie the swearing was significant in it and one can only see it to understand why. Maybe Altersteve, you will see it and be able to explain it better than I. But I have a feeling it's not your type of movie. It's a great movie, but sadly it will be missed specifically because of the language. Or because it looks depressing. It's a movie that shows depth is all I can say.
altersteve Posted January 19, 2014 Author Posted January 19, 2014 I'm sure I'll enjoy it. I've heard very good things about it.
Deborah Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 I saw the new Jack Ryan movie. I thought it was very exciting and wonder why it doesn't even have a FB page.
saemo Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 I'm Sundance-ing. "Laggies"was the last movie I saw. Next up are some shorts, then over the next few days, "I Origins", "Hits", "Only Lovers Left Alive", "Frank"and "Kimuko, the Treasure Hunter". Kimuko I'll be going to alone, no one else wants to see it, but it is the one I want to see the most out of that list.

Kimuko I'll be going to alone, no one else wants to see it, but it is the one I want to see the most out of that list. "I Origins", so far, I'd say is the best I've seen. It has religious/scientific themes, is well made, and I like the director and lead actress (Mike Cahill and Brit Marling). They paired up for "Another Earth" in 2011 (also a film I recommend). I'd call "I Origins" PG13 so "safe" for those who want to avoid the non-rated stuff at Sundance that would require heavy editing to get an 'R' rating (ala "Don Jon", which I avoided last year). "I Origins" won the Alfred P. Sloan award this year, given for a film that represents science and technology. ETA: Acquired by Fox Searchlight so will be in theaters within a year Saw "Camp X-Ray" yesterday, which is about a MP guard at Guantanamo Bay, played by Kristen Stewart ("Twilight" actress). Slow moving. It is up for the Audience Award. I gave it two stars, out of four. Probably also a PG13-ish movie. This afternoon, it's "Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter". I like the main actress, and I like the more obscure films at Sundance, so looking forward to seeing it. Found someone to go with me. English/Japanese w/ English subtitles. Tomorrow is "Only Lovers Left Alive", a Jim Jarmusch film starring Tilda Swinton. I'm looking forward to it with great expectations. I don't have a single favorite film, but in a list of favorite films, Jarmusch's "Dead Man" (with Johnny Depp) is on it. "Hits" was funny, would be 'R' rated in theaters (sex scenes), and has a liberal/political view, but at the same time is poking fun at the hyperbole that comes from both the political far left and far right. Directed/written by David Cross (Tobias in "Arrested Development", among other roles). Can't see it making it theaters but will probably show up on Netflix within the year. "Laggies", I'm neutral on. It was OK. If it was in theaters I'd wait for it to come out on Netflix. Stars Keira Knightley, whose role is a 28 yr old stuck in adolescence. Of course, it is about how she gets unstuck. "Frank" is off my list. I've heard good things about it but have other places to be and can't make the screening. From last year's fest, "Robot and Frank" is on Netflix. I started watching it a couple of weeks ago, but ran out of time. Will go back to it in another couple of weeks, but what I saw looked good. Award winner last year. (Yes, I am an indie film/doc geek. Can give a good list of "safe" films that I never tire of watching.) Edited January 23, 2014 by saemo
saemo Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 Last two, "Fishing Without Nets", which is about a man who with great hesitation joins a Somalian pirate gang. It is the flip side of "Captain Phillips", and better in some ways. The one movie I'd recommend to see in th group I saw, if you had to choose one."Only Lovers Left Alive" didn't disappoint this Jarmusch fan. Wonderful, in the eclectic way of his work. Will be looking to watch it again, sometime, somewhere. That's a wrap.
Garden Girl Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 I just rented "Blue Jasmine" starring Cate Blanchet... the latest Woody Allen movie (PG-13)... It's really well done, and Blanchet is my favorite female actress for her talent.... she is marvelous. Plays a woman who was married to a verry wealthy man who turned out to be a swindler and ends up in prison after she turns him in to the FBI as revenge for finding out about his numerous affairs. She loses everything... has a breakdown... leaves New York and goes out to San Fran to live with her sister while she pulls herself together... GG
Tacenda Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 I'm glad to see that you liked Blue Jasmine, it was what my first choice to rent would be, but read the reviews and it looked a little iffy. But going to rent it for sure now. Over the weekend I went to "Nebraska". It's a black and white film, and it was my husband's choice to go see it, and he usually dislikes black & white tv/films. We both loved it. It's so well acted. Stacy Keach and Bruce Dern are a couple of older actors. The gist of it centers on how to treat your parents when they do crazy things, and a great way to see who your true friends are.
Garden Girl Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 (edited) I watched an older movie I just added to my film library called Dead Calm... starring a young, very beautiful Nicole Kidman, Sam Neill as her husband, and Billy Zane...Nicole/Sam play a successful married couple, very much in love, one small child... one rainy night she is driving home from an event... her child is in his car seat when something he did distracts her and she has an accident... the child is killed... after she is out of the hospital, to get her away and help her heal emotionally, they are sailing their sailboat... On the open sea they spot another yacht that appears dead in the water, so they head toward it when they spot someone in a small dingy... they take on board a survivor... a young man (Zane)... what ensues is a chilling story... Calm Posted January 27, 2014 Posted January 27, 2014 That scene where Neill is pumping out the water as it creeps up over his chin is claustrophobic. 1

Kind of a depressing movie. Did you like how it ended? Makes one glad they didn't live like her character, poor thing. Money does not buy happiness. She did do a wonderful job of acting. Gohan Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 Just caught "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" again. Still awesome.

Cate Blanchett exhibits a true talent and is able to play many roles... several of my favorites: The Missing... directed by Ron Howard... about a widowed Ariz ranchwoman in late 1800's whose daughter is kidnapped by indians and she goes after them, with her estranged father who has shown up at her ranch and has been living among the indians... terrific action and suspense... (if you can rent it or have Netflix, I can recommend this) Elizabeth... and Elizabeth II, The Golden Years... wonderful films about Queen Elizabeth I, daughter of Henry VIII and Ann Boelyn, and her 40 year reign... and several others... Now Blue Jasmine - I wanted the ending to be more positive... but it was realistic ,,, GG
altersteve Posted February 3, 2014 Author Posted February 3, 2014 I was heartbroken to hear about Philip Seymour Hoffman yesterday morning. He was one of my favorite actors.
