Tony uk Posted November 20 Posted November 20 Hello I am new to this forum. Although not a Mormon, I am a Church attending Christian. And the am interested in the Church of Jesus of Latter Day Saints. I hope this forum can help me in my potential journey.
manol Posted November 20 Posted November 20 Welcome, Tony! Are you comfortable providing a bit of background? Wishing you the best on your full-of-potential journey, wherever it takes you. 2
Tony uk Posted November 20 Author Posted November 20 Hi everyone. I'm from England, UK, middle aged. Although I am a Roman Catholic, church attendee. Last few years I have also found myself looking towards the Church of Jesus of Latter Day Saints. If anything, I am curious, although open to looking further.
Tony uk Posted November 20 Author Posted November 20 I am open to any enquiries about myself, just as much as I am hoping to learn.
rpn Posted November 20 Posted November 20 Couple of resources ? The "Encyclopedia of Mormonism" was published by a secular press some 30+ years ago and is now kept up to date at eom.byu.edu This are short essays about things the public might run across about the church or church history: https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/manual/gospel-topics?lang=eng We have just finished a modern history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints which can be found online at https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/history/saints-v1?lang=eng if you don't want to buy the four volumes. If you want to know what we know about Jesus Christ, see "Jesus the Christ" by James E. Talmage, and "Jesus the Christ Study Guide" which updates secular scholarship. (As do "Jehovah and the World of the Old Testamanent" and "Jesus Christ and the World of the New Testament" by Richard Neitzel Holzapfel (Author), Dana M. Pike (Author), David Rolph Seely (Author) ) If you are interested in why we believe that the Gospel of Jesus Christ had to be restored (and was, by Joseph Smith beginning in 1820 see all of the known documents about him at josephsmithpaperproject.com) I'd suggest https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/mi/11/ and https://www.amazon.com/Collected-Works-Hugh-Nibley-Vol-ebook/dp/B01LDPAF50 If you are a more visual learner, Gospel Stream App has lots of video on various topics. If you have read the CES letter and want to read what we know: https://www.fairlatterdaysaints.org/answers/Sarah_Allen_CES_Response_Posts We believe all absolute truth and are encouraged in scripture to study all topics in the world as part of our continuing discipleship of Jesus Christ. The Gospel of Jesus Christ incorporates all absolute truth in every subject area (though there are many subjects about which we have not yet determined what absolute truth is). Welcome. 3

Calm Posted November 20 Posted November 20 A couple of useful manuals summarizing our beliefs are here: https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/manual/doctrines-of-the-gospel-student-manual?lang=eng (This is for college age kids, still pretty simple) This is a basic manual previously used for new member classes. I prefer it because it is a quick and easy read that gives the framework of the gospel which can then be filled in as you are interested. https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/manual/gospel-principles?lang=eng

Catholicism and Mormonism have a lot of overlapping traditions, especially, apostolic succession, priests and holy ground. We differ more in Greek philosophy and metaphysics, but even if in error, we love a good claim to divine authority. So, if I left the Latter-day Saints today, well, call me a Greek philosopher, because I believe in priests. We both often share a love of history, good, bad and ugly. Recent times, we been both interested in the modern scholarship on the "Royal Cult" of ancient Israel. Basically, it's studying about Pre-Christian Christianity in the Old Testament. Or maybe you'd like discussing Pre-Columbian Trans-Oceanic Diffusionism. Basically, it's evidence that the Western Hemisphere had contact with the Eastern Hemisphere before Columbus. It's usually fun, you can be a diffusionism theorist without having to believe in Mormonism. But if you just recently started looking into Mormonism, then excuse me, I'll return to sitting in the corner. It can take a year or more of study in either Mormonism or just the relevant subjects we could talk about, like modern Old Testament studies, Early Christian Fathers, the Dead Sea Scrolls, to discuss such rich subjects. Remember, Latter-day Saints love questions, and there are no dumb questions. P.S. Get 25 posts to unlock starting topics outside the Social Hall.. Edited November 21 by Pyreaux 4

It has been said that Mormonism has “Catholic richness with Protestant sensibilities”…the vast majority of early Saints were Protestants so our church culture tends to be Low Church, but our doctrine and rituals align closer to a High Church paradigm. Many of the events around the Book of Mormon and beginning of the Restored Church attached to the Jewish sacred calendar. You might call the artifacts that were given to Joseph Smith along with the Book of Mormon “relics”. Another version is we have “a Catholic structure with Protestant instincts”. The two quotes are from the below conversation starting about 12 minutes 2
JVW Posted November 21 Posted November 21 Welcome to the board Tony. I hope your stay here is a pleasant one!
Tony uk Posted November 21 Author Posted November 21 Well, that's definitely a good opening welcome. Many thanks to all of you for helping me on board. I have a confession to make, probably the Catholic coming out of me. When I was younger, many moons ago. I first became aware of 'Mormons' as a result of The Osmond's. Although young at the time, I enjoyed their music, and continue to do now.
JVW Posted November 21 Posted November 21 (edited) How long have you been a Roman Catholic for? What were you before being Catholic? What got you interested in Catholicism? What do you think about your church? What do you like about it? Dislike about it? Why are you interested in learning about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints? What do you find appealing about it? Do you have any questions or concerns about the LDS church? What do you think about the Bible? Do you have any favorite verses or books in the Bible? Do you prefer the Old or New Testament, why? Have you read the Book of Mormon yet? Why or why not? What do you think about it? Why do you believe in Jesus Christ? Have you ever had any experiences with the divine? Or do you operate mostly on belief without much personal experience? (I have a Catholic friend who falls in the latter category. She can see how God's hand is in her life, but hasn't really had any direct experiences with Him.) Do you prefer art or sports? school or work? Do you enjoy any hobbies? Do you like reading or watching TV? What kind of media do you like to consume? edit: @Tony uk Edited November 21 by JVW

It's a funny coincidence that you mention the Osmonds, as I was just discussing them with my sister who came to visit us in Utah last weekend, and with someone else last night. (My life is filled with funny coincidences, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised!) And it also turns out there was a recent article in the Deseret News about Donny: Why Donny Osmond and Michael Jackson had such a strong bond 1
Tony uk Posted November 22 Author Posted November 22 I appreciate the welcome that I have received since I signed up to this forum, and it is very much appreciated. If there is a delay in any response from myself, then it is only the time difference between the U.K and the U.S. I have been a Catholic from childhood, and have always been active within the church, in one role or another.i have always felt connected to the divine, in a spiritual sense. The Book of Mormon, I recently had a copy sent to me by email from missionaries and downloaded on to my mobile phone. I have never read before, no particular reason. Only now out of genuine interest do I feel the need to read it, to learn and understand. I do not have one particular phrase from the Bible that I feel is my favourite, as I find it all to be relevant.

Tony uk Posted November 22 Author Posted November 22 Man thanks GoCeltics, and everyone so far for sending me information. It is very helpful in my looking and searching.

Tony uk Posted November 27 Author Posted November 27 Well, I have been on the board for a week now and still glad that I joined. Just wanted to say, especially those kind enough to engage with me since my arrival. Today I successfully learnt how to respond to a post by quoting. Felt I wanted to share this breakthrough, as I am not very tech aware. 2

Long story me and tech have not gone through life hand in hand. There are many issues in the Catholic church at the moment. Some straight forward, some confusing. Recently obtained a copy of the book of Mormon. I've looked through it. However I will have a proper read of it soon. The only reason on I have not so far, I have been comfortable in my own environment. 1
