Joshua Valentine Posted April 2, 2019 Posted April 2, 2019 (edited) An announcement today from the Church indicated that at the April General Conference President Nelson would continue The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints name correction by revealing the final name change for members - Christians. Perhaps this will come as a surprise to many, but for others it will be welcome. Regrettably for those still using paper scriptures it will mean replacing our current version. Frankly I am pleased by the efforts of the Church to actually consider being completely forthright about your unique place as full followers of Jesus Christ, Otherwise claims to honesty and taking upon the name of Jesus Christ is just empty, even offensive to God according to the recent revelations of Christ to President Nelson, which this change will show to be otherwise. It is also indicated that more details would be given in April Conference on how to differentiate between members of the Church and those of other religions claiming to be Christians. I welcome these practical specifics, and I personally hope it´s simply to specify members as ¨LDS Christians¨. https://www.lds.org/newsroom/aprilconference/namecorrectionmembers Edited April 2, 2019 by Joshua Valentine
Calm Posted April 2, 2019 Posted April 2, 2019 So since the link just appears to go to the home page, I assume this is another April 1 thread? 2

Duncan Posted April 2, 2019 Posted April 2, 2019 Let's face it is anyone going to listen to any of the leaders of the Church except for President Russell M. Nelson?!

Actually, I do usually refer to myself as LDS Christian. However, the original name appears to be The Way. Paul said he was of The Way. In some ways I am sad that this name did not stick, because I believe it encapsulates the essence of Christianity. It implies members actually followed a path - they had purpose - rather than the modern OSAS mentality of going to church to get saved one time, and then going home. If that is the true way, I want essentially nothing to do with it. 1

Some of the Qumran writings were very suggestive.

Yes, there was full-blown messianism at Qumran, and presumably among the various Essene communities throughout Judah and Galilee. Jewish scholars, such as the following, now admit the continuity. Israel Knohl, The Messiah Before Jesus: The Suffering Servant of the Dead Sea Scrolls (Berkeley: U.C. Press, 2000). Michael Wise, The First Messiah: Investigating the Savior Before Christ (S.F.: HarperSanFrancisco, 1999). 1

As I've said before, though I am an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I identify as a Christian first and as a member of the Mormon church. ETA: I'm not overly concerned with what the prophet might decide I should call myself as I'll continue to use identifiers that make the most sense with the people to whom I am speaking. ETA: I'm not overly concerned with what the prophet might decide I should call myself as I'll continue to use identifiers that make the most sense with the people to whom I am speaking. The church is forever changing with all of these revelations from the prophets. And we are also directed to have our own revelations as well. So my revelation or gut feeling is, that next year or in 10 years I'll still be eating my vitamins and awaiting new revelations from a prophet and I'll still have my own revelations. So to me, the church is well and good for the service op's, the community, the ? but I'll hold onto my own semblence of a belief, or a moral compass, and if a revelation is on the contrary to that compass, which IMO, is God given, I'll not partake. Which, I believe, is what the previous leaders of the church have said is ok, but I don't need their permission.

Not quite sure what the point of you post (serious or sarcastic) is. 17 hours ago, Calm said: It is this part that looks like the joke: Then you typed:¨by revealing the final name change for members - Christians.¨ That would be mean of me, Calm, - no the joke was just that the announcement of such was made when it had not been. But it is a vehicle to discuss why this wasn´t the term for members (simply ¨Christian¨) given by Nelson (or all other presidents for that matter) [with LDS Christian as the more specific version to specify type of Christian). 3 hours ago, Avatar4321 said: How is this new? What? That members should primarily refer to themselves as Christians and/or LDS Christians instead of Mormons or LDS? I don´t know. I meant the current Prophet, as I say, President Nelson, and I said it because of all the talk about announcements. I have no doubt the leaders of the Church are in line with the Prophet who is in line with Christ, otherwise he wouldn't be the Prophet anymore. Elder William B. Wormie of the 70 wouldn't be announcing anything, President Nelson would be the one Edited April 2, 2019 by Duncan 1
churchistrue Posted April 2, 2019 Posted April 2, 2019 I like the name "LDS Christians". Let's go with it.
poptart Posted April 3, 2019 Posted April 3, 2019 Ohh boy, sure this will go over well. Why not just go with LDS Christian or better yet stick with Mormons? For me atleast it's a great heads up that I'm talking to someone who's probably a bit more honest than the average American Christian. Also Mormon has such a memorable feel to it. Even as a kid I'd look forward to mom talking to her mormon friends, they were at least nice to me.

I love calling myself a Mormon and I’m proud of my heritage (Mormon). I don’t feel less or that I’m demeaning myself. Just the opposite.
Calm Posted April 3, 2019 Posted April 3, 2019 We have been calling ourselves Christian for as long as I can remember and it is in plenty of older talks and writings I have read from church leaders and members. That is nothing new. We just don't only use that as our name. 3
Joshua Valentine Posted April 3, 2019 Author Posted April 3, 2019 5 hours ago, The Nehor said: No, I simply am less and am demeaning myself and the Savior if I go by any other name. I feel you but, wait, what name are you going by, The Nehor? And I don´t mean the name ¨The Nehor¨ I mean ¨name¨ as a term for a member.

It is this and the inconsistency between his reasoning and directives that leaves me wondering about this announcement. More on the inconsistency later, when I have time, probably tomorrow.
Rivers Posted April 3, 2019 Posted April 3, 2019 I am a Christian and belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Unfortunately I live in Utah and using the term Christian conveys that I am not a Latter-day Saint. 1

This is curious - pre-announcement of an official change to what I suggest in the OP - what do you think would happen if you told other members that you were an ¨LDS Christian¨? As for non-LDS in Utah, surely news spreads pretty quickly in Utah from the LDS Church to them as well. Any change is not going to be picked up right away; time will be required whatever the correction. Sooooo.....
