Yes, but I am not talking about anything except illegal immigration on a worldwide stage. I think your point has more to do with immigration policy than illegal immigration. If a nation restricts what peoples are allowed in their country based solely on race then there is an argument. The problem is that it muddies the water when it is addressed in illegal immigration policy.

Nudder question: were any border jumpers getting med checks and vaccinations like they received on Ellis Island? Nudder nudder question: were any Ellis Islanders bringing in kidnapped or purchased children? The Emma Lazarus poem was written in a day when an influx of immigrants benefitted the nation. Times have changed. A pundit asked a hard question the other day in a Washington Post op-ed column: Why do we need more people in the country today? How does it benefit the nation? No one seems to have a good answer to that question. 1

If so, Lopez is saying, hey just immigrate to the United States. Mexico has had a long standing idea that they would just take back their territory from the United States. The massive amount of immigration to the SW United States, especially California, could be viewed as a first step in bringing about that idea into reality. To some extent Mexicans view it as rightfully their land, and the idea of reinhabiting it is kept alive in the culture by things like the festival of Cinco de Mayo, although that is not particularly having to do with anything about the US I realize this post is speculative, and probably will engender some feelings. Please realize I am not being anti-Mexican here, and am not making any personal comments about immigration. I have stated my beliefs about that elsewhere. It does not seem to me like Mexicans are under any particular persecution or need for asylum, so they should not receive top priority for immigration. However, it does seem to me that immigration may be used as a "bargaining chip" in response to comments and policies by the current US President. I think it’s pretty obvious what Lopez is doing: he’s capitalizing on widespread Mexican outrage at the Trump administration’s recent actions at the border. I’ve been studying Latin America for more than 30 years (one of my degrees is in Latin American Studies), and I’ve never seen any significant desire among Mexicans to retake what we took from them. The main resentment they have is that we treat them with disrespect. As for immigrants, the primary motivations are economic and a desire to escape endemic violence. 1

Are you also an advocate for the French? They were, after all, wrapped up in continental war in Europe, in choking debt, and fundamentally incapable of saying no to Jefferson's offer to purchase Louisiana. Should we accept any and all Frenchmen who sneak in down the St Lawrence River? They have, in my view, at least as strong a claim as Mexico to our sympathies.

No Yanqui can own real estate in Mexico or own outright any business in Mexico. Gringos are welcome to rent, not buy. Mexico, moreover, has periodically and episodically devalued its currency in order to avoid paying its debts, mostly held by Gringos. Los Yanquis, in short, had and have causus belli against Mexico, but you don't see us seizing Baja in payment of debts and compensation for seized assets. And don't get me started on Mexican policies compelling its poorest and its even poorer regional neighbors to emigrate northward. Mexico is in no position to lecture anybody. 2

There is some truth here. As much as Mexico rails about our southern border not being porous enough for their tastes their southern border is a hotbed of murder, rape, and thievery. If you want to hear horrifying stories talk to people from Honduras and El Salvador and the rest about crossing into Mexico. They do not have a moral high ground. On the other hand we should not structure our policy with the modern Israeli approach of “They are so much worse so we cannot be criticized!” Edited June 23, 2018 by The Nehor 2
