I'm not saying that to be mean. I've had friends I've had to remove myself from simply because they were so negative about various things. I still love them. And pray for them. But sometimes the negativity can have a bad influence on you.

Christ said that if our eye offends us pluck it out. If our hand offends us cut it off. If something has a bad influence on you, get it out of your life!

as you said, what is important is ministering and bringing people to Christ. moroni showed us the way to judge. We should follow his counsel.

Bad advice. If everyone did this I would not have any friends.

Compared to the Dehlin podcasts, I see very little comparative value in Mormondiscussions podcasts.  Some, but not much.   I've listened to some and there is no a single one that I respected; the moderator pretends to be an authority in things like sociology and sexuality, for example, when he really isn't.  I don't think the moderator is well read, but I don't think John Dehlin is well read and I also know that Larry King had a personal rule about not reading material published by persons he interviewed.  Is it laziness or lack of intelligence, or just a way of appearing fresh and inquisitive?  Who can say?

It is permissible to discuss public figures and always has been. But the complaint should be about what the person is producing not only the person.

It seems to me that, while it is best to avoid leveling personal attacks against someone, if one courts publicity, places one's work in the public domain (in the sense that the public readily has access to it), and attempts to develop a following, one's views and opinions are fair game for feedback.

Too many people want to court publicity when it suits them and to shun it when it does not.

I can see the need to not attack him personally.  I do have a problem with his podcast.  As far as ignoring him.  I really do, but he comes up fairly often.  My experience with someone who was having doubts and had listened was not helped at all by the podcast, it was a hindrance.  I took a quite awhile trying to write and almost didn`t.  I certainly don`t want to be in trouble.  I don't even post all that much.  The discussion has been useful, even the parts where I was brought to task about it.  I will lock the thread if it becomes mean or the moderators want me to.  It is a little hard to watch people struggle and then find a podcast that talks about "Leading by Faith" be part of the problem.

I thought we had to be the ones to lock a thread.  I really don`t post that much.  Also, I didn`t know how to talk about it without starting a thread.  I guess either don`t talk about it or resurrect an old thread.  It is interesting to see on Facebook what he has posted about General Authorities and then for me to be scolded about my behavior on the board.

Some of that is on point.  However, it isn't really true that Hugh kept so quiet.  He had an enlightening article on race in the same Spring 1973 issue of Dialogue where Lester Bush had his famous article on Blacks and the priesthood.  He wrote and published a specific attack on loyalty oaths and McCarthyism in the midst of the deliberate destruction of so many lives by Senator McCarthy.  He made the Brethren on the dais squirm while delivering his masterful "From Leaders to Managers" at the BYU Commencement in August 1983.  In debate with Sterling McMurrin, Hugh attacked BYU, while Sterling ironically defended it.  Hugh also directly attacked the dress & grooming code at BYU.  In several letters to editors he further parted company with the powers that be.  Several faculty members at BYU considered Hugh an enemy.  On one occasion, when the great William F. Albright delivered a lecture at BYU, there was a Q&A afterward.  A history professor who hated Hugh asked Albright his opinion on the Dead Sea Scrolls.  Albright advised him to ask Hugh Nibley -- Albright knew Hugh well since Hugh had taken his first sabbatical year at Johns Hopkins Univ where Albright was on the faculty.
