How do you think the temple recommend requirements will change 50 years from now?

One example of how the temple recommend requirements have changed is the WoW; it didn't become a requirement to follow the WoW until "100 years after the receipt of the revelation by Joseph Smith."

Some early church leaders didn't follow the WoW many years after the revelation was received.  For example:

"I was quite restless all night. Felt chilly. Took a little Brandy sling and a cup of coffee, and slept some before daylight and until 9 am." (Wilford Woodruff Journal, 9 Jun 1897).

"By 1933, the General Handbook of Instructions listed the Word of Wisdom as a requirement for temple worship, exactly 100 years after the receipt of the revelation by Joseph Smith. [12]"

How do you think temple recommend requirements will change (if at all) over the next 50 years?

I dunno, I got pneumonia so 'll probably be dead in 2 weeks but while i'm still alive I think the questions could be more Christian based, like "When was the last time you forgave somebody, " or "have you helped a poor person lately?" (you could easily pay tithing but still be a jerk to the poor) or, "Are you currently holding any grudges or hate against anybody or group?", stuff like that

Hope you survive Duncan. :good:

Law of chastity expanded to cover virtual reality sex, probably no wording change in questions.

Are you now or have you ever been a member of the Whore of Babylon political party?

Is there anything in your conduct relating to your robotic servants that is not harmony with the gospel such as berating them for being stupid?

Have you refused to get an implanted credit chip that the apostles have made known as the Mark of the Beast?

If you have more then one wife or husband did you get permission from Priesthood leaders and all preexisting spouses before entering said marriages?

Have you had any of your children genetically engineered?

Do you tithe your time by doing missionary work, defending our settlements from the zombie menace, keeping our would-be robotic overlords confused by feeding them endless paradoxes, or any combination of these worthy goals?

Forget future robot servants, I currently call my dogs stupid all the time. :)

I'm guessing all of them will be tweaked a bit.  for instance the first question might be more along the lines of "do you believe or have faith in..." rather than the current, "do you have faith in..."

Optimistic me prediction:

No more temple recommends.  Non members will be able to enter the temple to view ceremonies, as long as they are quiet and respectful.  Members will be able to receive ordinances, no worthiness interview, worthiness is individually determined, not determined through interviews with church leaders.

Pessimistic me prediction:

New question about accepting the proclamation to the family as doctrine.

New question specifically about disavowing family or friends who participate in same sex relationships.

New question about pornography & masturbation.

New question about social media and internet, somehow trying to distinguish between acceptable activity vs. disloyal activities.

New question about keeping the Sabbath day holy.

New question about dressing modestly.

My Bishop asks most people the following question in most of his worthiness interviews (NOT as part, or in addition to the standard scripted TR questions).

"When was the last time you saw any type of pornography?"

If a bishop asked me that question, my first response would be..."define pornography".

Over the next 50 years, huh.

Not sure that I'd call it a requirement but probably an added focus on our need to do more temple work during the Millennium.

And maybe some questions to determine how much we then know about how to get more information about our family members who still need to have their temple work done.

Like, "Do you know how to get enough information to do the temple  work for your family members who still need their temple work done?"

Well for me at least, the last thing I want is to be a spectacle during some of my most sacred rites. I hate when people are watching my paint, let alone perform sacred ordinances.

Plus, claustrophobia in the initiatory ceremony.

Honestly is just sounds weird and disruptive.

with luv,

BD

The initiatory is unique, not a lot of room.  I can't imagine a scenario where crouds of people would be trying to view someone's ritual.  Sounds like an extreme example.

Everything would of course be respecting the wishes of the individuals involved.

A family sealing could invite anyone to the ceremony, but a person off the street couldn't just show up without the permission of the family.

Why, what would be horrible about it?

I would not want gawkers to show up at an endowment just to see what it is like. I do not trust most people to be self-aware enough to exclude themselves from the temple and I also know some humble LDS that struggle with feeling worthy to go to the temple that definitely are that need a recommend interview to make them feel ready.

I would have no problem with letting people into family member sealings if that is what you mean but I am not in charge of that decision and realize the apostles can change that and have not and there are probably very good reasons for that.

I suspect, based on the current number of Temples and attendance patterns outside of Utah and Church growth trends, the interview will go something like this:

Interviewer: Thanks for coming in Brother Smith.  Here is the interview question:  Do you want to go to the Temple?

Brother Smith: Yes.

Interviewer:  Thank goodness.  Here is your recommend.  The Temple will be open on the first Tuesday and third Wednesday of next month.  Thank you for serving in the House of the Lord.

Basically turning all temples into common ward buildings.

For gawkers that is an extreme example.  What if a gawker was your inactive family member that wants to support you while you go through this ritual for the first time.  Lots of scenarios that I can imagine that would work, it would have to be on respectful grounds of course with certain limits and exceptions.

What do you mean you don't trust people to be self aware enough to exclude themselves?  Are you implying that someones worthiness might somehow contaminate everyone else?  If so, do you feel like the sacrament you partake of is somehow contaminated when the priests blessing it were breaking the WoW the night before?  What about a baptism?  Last time I checked, the church doesn't consider any ordinances invalid just because someone might judge the person performing them as unworthy.

As for people feeling unworthy themselves thats because we have very harmful rhetoric about this idea of worthiness in our church.  A few talks by GAs could take us in the right direction.

Yes, yes on family members into sealings, I think this could be accomplished in phases and that should be phase #1, most importantly!!!
