Who wants joy when so many are suffering in this world?

I'm not sure I completely understand what you're saying here.  Are you saying that because some suffer in this world (and actually all suffer at some point) that no one should have joy?  That because there are children dying somewhere that a new mother and father can't experience joy at the birth of their child?  I don't think joy and sorrow are mutually exclusive.  One can have joy at the birth of a child or other similar event and still feel sorrow for the suffering of others.

I disagree with you, what part of God/Jesus Plan offers free will? Not word of Wisdom rules, You can't skip the church regularly, especially not for a good weekend in Wendower or Mesquite...There's never an healthy balance of gratification for a TBM, I mean.....even drinking a beer or a cup of black tea is impossible....I'm European, when I was in France,Switzerland with the missionaries (I wasn't one) I always used to tease them "Now I realize that you are bringing the good news to them but how do they take the bad news of giving up their Wine,Tea and beer?" They knew I was joking but deep down they knew this was an insurmountable problem.....

A good weekend in Wendover? There is no such thing. And it is little wonder why anyone who believes there is, is no longer a member of the Church.

I'm taking us off topic.  I retract my question.

Yiptey.  Many of the highest baptizing ones were the worst ones.  That's how they were the highest baptizing.  Breaking rules and letting it all hang out.  I know because mine was the same--highest baptizing.

Well, mine was good for the most part.

Well how do all these exceptional missionaries that are called to your area fail to accomplish as much as the weaselly chumps that found themselves on a mission with you?

No, Not having the choice is.

When I became member this bothered me alot, not being able to drink tea.....Year is 1976, I'm happy to be in the the Church, I quit smoking (cold turkey, in three days....I still think that was the greatest achievement of my life, but a cup of tea...?After few months I started drinking my tea...I had no guilt feelings whatsoever...because i knew tea was harmless, and would not keep a commandment just because my bishop or prophet decreed. And I realized this was an obedience issue.

Computers are supposed to operate in binary. You are not. My saying the elders in my mission were not as strong generally as the current crop is not saying my mission was filled with useless layabout. I mean, yes, I was there, but I alone do not skew the average.

Wait a minute...I've had a few good weekends in Wendover.  Maybe it depends on why you go there?  I've seen some great concerts at the Peppermill concert hall...and I am STILL a member of the church.

Well I didnt' introduce the concept of more baptisms as being a measure of good missionary versus bad.  Anywhos I find your idea of the missionaries of today being better than in past days a bit off.  What more to say.  Have a good one.

There is misery in the world therefore we should seek misery? Sounds like hell's philosophy.

Choosing "no" isn't the same as having no choice, though.

Everyone who suffers is in hell?  Not sure about that.  It's more of a philosophy to say we're all in this together, so let's mourn with those that mourn and help those who are in need.

By being miserable. No thanks. I will help but not by multiplying suffering like a self-flagellating nut.

We all draw a line with our help somewhere.  none of us are Jesus, after  all.

Jesus taking upon himself suffering was helping. My suffering has no such effect.

Then stop your suffering.

I do as I can. You are the one suggesting joy is wrong when there is so much suffering.

I've been to a couple of concerts too,  "Little River Band" and "Eddie Rabbit".  But will never set foot on a Fun Bus again.

It might be useful for you to consider that it's possible to believe the doctrines without necessarily believing that the institutional church still has control over their eternal salvation and exaltation.  I imagine you'll doubt and debate this but I'm not going to derail with that... there are people who believe that way.  I'm just putting it out there as added perspective to the point you made above.

I guess it is possible to believe the doctrines without necessarily believing in the need to make sacred covenants in holy places and then keep them throughout our lives.

It's just not very logically coherent.
