77 Truths

A couple of acquaintances of mine were reading this book called 77 Truths by Bret Colbridge. They have now decided to leave the church. Is anybody else familiar with this book or author?

Apparently it led them away from the institutional church but not the gospel itself.

Anything can cause cracks in a shelf. I thought my shelf was invincible but I have cracks right now myself that others on the board have teased me about when I brought up my concerns about the CES letter. It doesn't feel good to be teased when you're vulnerable and weak.

" believe nothing you hear and only half that you see " - EA Poe . I wonder what fraction of what is read, particularly on the internet , can be believed . Finding a kernel of truth in human communication has always been a struggle.

Apparently for only 16 dollars you can find 77 truths.

So apparently these acquaintances of mine believe that Joseph Smith himself will come back to set things straight. I am really curious to know what kind of stuff they are reading.

Here is someone who reviewed the book. He is one who goes around calling Denver Snuffer a prophet. Can't remember if he has resigned, but pretty sure he has been rebaptized.

If he loves it, I am thnking I probably won't be too impressed (based on experience of not liking stuff he's recommended in the past, not because of who he is as a person)

One key to discerning truth is that any book that involves many portions in all caps is of the devil.

Why do people believe everything they read? There seems to be something about having something printed that makes people believe it must be correct. :(

Indeed.

They are probably getting it from D&C 90:16:

16 And this shall be your business and mission in all your lives, to preside in council, and set in order all the affairs of this church and kingdom.

Sorry.  I don`t remember any one making fun of you, but do you want to research it out or just leave it alone for awhile?  Otherwise, I think the FairMormon responses are good.  Kevin Christensen`s got some good points.  As far as anti-Mormon literature in general Lawrence Fosters Career Apostates article about the Tanners and the Anonymous Response to Mormonism Shadow or Reality starts the process of looking at any type of literature (especially anti-Mormon literature) with a more critical eye.  I just googled them so I know they are readily available.  There is something to just putting doubts aside for awhile and trying to build a relationship with Christ.

I just went back and read several pages after Video posted he was troubled by the CES letter.

Imo, only one person responded by teasing him and that was Skeptic Christian...who unfortunately imo treats those he disagrees with quite a lot like that. He was one of the first to comment on your post, video, so perhaps that is why you felt it was more than one person doing it.

So you were not singled out from the rest of us because you expressed doubt. You should see him on the evolution and other threads.

And he has his own issues with knowing what the Spirit is, which you can see in the confirmation bias thread. So you and he are alike in struggling to understand what the gospel might really be.

Readstoomuch, you responded to video's expressed doubts in that thread with kindness and concern, as usual. :)

Video, would you like a thread for dealing with your concerns about the CES letter? We can try to keep it tightly on topic and ask mods to ban anyone who goes into personal remarks. Iwould be happy to start one for you, Readstoomuch probably would as well.

Ya calm that would be good. And nehor careful with saying you don't understand why people believe everything just cuz it's in print. We do have the Book of Mormon Doctrine and covenants and Pearl of Great Price and ensign articles that are in print and we all believe those.

And if our scriptures are true it logically follows that everything Else that is printed is true too.

If some printed things are true they must all be true. So let it be printed to prove it.

But we don't believe them because they are in print. I love my Agatha Christie books, but I also judge them to be fiction.

It is up, Video. Make it easy for those trying to help by sticking to one topic at a time as much as possible. Use the report function please if you think someone is getting too personal, I will as well.

Just to be clear, the usual "shelf" metaphor is that if something is causing us faith-distress, we can put it on a mental "shelf" and not think about it anymore.  You seem to be introducing a different "shelf" metaphor.

For those who are as unfamiliar with the book "77 Truths" as I am, here is the summary from Amazon:

If you are a Latter Day Saint who hungers to receive all that God once offered the Saints through the Prophet Joseph Smith, and if you are like Moroni of old, and “will not deny the Christ,” (Moroni 1:3), then this text may be of use to you as you fulfill your specific errand from the Lord. Within each of the 77 Truths scripture is provided that reveals the light and wisdom necessary to receive the mysteries of God and become Zion at heart. Those who accept the Divine invitation represent the “few” who will be blessed to contribute to Millennial Zion. This is the day that each of us must now choose: God or man? Truth or tradition? Zion or Babylon?

He also has a book to help married couples where one spouse has had a "spiritual awakening" and the other hasn't:

In Mormonism today, there exists a growing number of LDS couples, who find themselves in a complicated situation. Generally speaking, these men and women have been married in the temple, are active in the church, and are working to raise children in this dark and difficult world. Although every story is unique, the basic challenge these couples face is similar. One spouse, and it can be either the husband or the wife, determines to search deeper into the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the glories of the Kingdom. (D&C 42:61). He or she studies scripture and then compares the holy word of God to what the LDS Church is currently teaching. This comparison results in a spiritual awakening, where the growing member realizes just how much light and truth has been lost since the death of the Prophet Joseph Smith. They may then try to share their new perspective with those they love, but often find that the other does not appreciate their new understanding, and instead would rather stay in the religious traditions passed down by the fathers. (D&C 93:39). To assist these couples in working through spiritual differences, a twelve-step program is provided here in this text.

But the Cthulu Mythos- totally different story.
