Kenngo1969 Posted September 13, 2015 Posted September 13, 2015 Oh my gosh...looks like they won in the last minute or so. Better get out the throat lozenges. If these late-game heroics keep up, I guess we'll just have to start callin' 'em the Cardiac Cougs. (Man, they sure like to make it interesting; just when someone's ready to throw in the towel on 'em ... Not that I've ever been ready to do that, or anything ... ) 1
Garden Girl Posted September 13, 2015 Posted September 13, 2015 Oh my gosh...looks like they won in the last minute or so. Better get out the throat lozenges. Cal... his throat will be sore for sure... what a game! the last five minutes were incredible... Tanner Mangrum just doestn't quit. The BYU defense played wonderfully... offense made good plays but need to be more consistent... all in all, what a game!! And our quarterback, Tanner, 22 years old, just home from his mission in June, reports to football camp, works hard, prepares for his role as back-up to Taysom... then suddenly last week was thrown into the spotlight as he took over as starting quarterback... and tonight... his first full game as the starter... showed how cool he is under pressure, how unafraid he is... he proved last week wasn't just a fluke... Calm Posted September 13, 2015 Posted September 13, 2015 Son and husband bought season tickets this year so should be enjoying the season if it continues like this.
Avatar4321 Posted September 13, 2015 Posted September 13, 2015 Two wins so far. That Nebraska game was a nail biter though.
Kenngo1969 Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 ... Tanner Mangrum just doestn't quit. ...Small correction, GG. It's Mangum. jkwilliams Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 As happy as I am about the last two games, I think maybe this is the week BYU runs out of luck, Here's hoping I'm wrong. Go, Cougars!
Garden Girl Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 As happy as I am about the last two games, I think maybe this is the week BYU runs out of luck, Here's hoping I'm wrong. Go, Cougars! Hello jkwilliams...This coming game will undoubtedly be a real challenge, and it may well be that we will lose... but I don't see it as our "running out of luck." UCLA is a formidable opponent... and the venue is the Rose Bowl... We won't win every game, but there are more wins to come... this may not be one of them, simply because it is after all UCLA... GG

GG I think they have a chance. After all, the last time I was in the Rose Bowl, BYU beat UCLA. What I meant by "running out of luck" is that the last two weeks BYU did not look all that great, but a few long heaves made the difference. If they are going to win this week, they'll have to play more consistently, IMO. Still, they did put themselves in the position of being close enough so that big plays made a difference at the end. Nevertheless, I'll be staying up late Saturday to watch the game (it starts at 10:30 pm here). Edited September 15, 2015 by jkwilliams

I agree... the offense particularly needs to play better... defense has been doing pretty good... GG
jkwilliams Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 I agree... the offense particularly needs to play better... defense has been doing pretty good... GG Yep. Even on the plays where Boise moved the ball, the coverage was there. They just need to do a better job tackling. This from Ivan Maisel of ESPN seems about right: 1. Is this a bad thing? BYU averaged 34 points in its two victories, yet the Cougars had only one drive of at least 10 plays in length -- an 11-play drive, led by Taysom Hill, for a field goal against Nebraska. Tanner Mangum, the redshirt freshman quarterback who may be elected governor of Utah if he keeps up his late-game heroics, is averaging 5.1 snaps per possession in his five quarters of play. I guess that's fine is the drive ends in a touchdown: Mangum's five touchdown drives average 5.6 snaps. But he could stand to move the chains every once in a while.
jkwilliams Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 BYU is a 16.5 pt. underdog. I think we have a chance at winning this, but I think BYU beats the spread.
Walden Posted September 15, 2015 Author Posted September 15, 2015 Are you kidding me with these late-game heroics? How many rabbits can BYU pull out of their hat? I don't think that the Cougars will be able to hang with UCLA on the road, as the Bruins look like a very good team with a stout defense and a productive offense, but I agree that they should cover that spread. Looking at the rest of the schedule, I don't see another game on there that BYU shouldn't at least contend in....Michigan is very winnable, and I think Missouri is the toughest game remaining on the schedule. At this point, 9-10 wins looks doable, barring the injury bug.
Rivers Posted September 16, 2015 Posted September 16, 2015 What's the difference between the BYU football team and Cheerios?Cheerios belong in a bowl. 1
Avatar4321 Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 I'm not going to count byu out till it's over. 1
Garden Girl Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 (edited) It's half-time and BYU leads UCLA 10 - 3... they held UCLA to a field goal in the first half... and we intercepted 3 times. But we need to protect Mangum more because UCLA is getting to him too often, sacking him, and he doesn't have time to pass... I hope the Cougs will come out of the lockeroom with an increased determination and we just might stand a chance to win... GG EDIT TO ADD: Well, I thought we had it... In the closing minutes of the game, the score was 24 - 23 UCLA's favor... It was our ball in the 4th quarter after the UCLA touchdown that gave them the lead for the first time in the game, and Mangum had made a couple of good passes as well as we made some runs... we were in UCLA territory with just over a minute to go... Mangum threw a pass into the end zone that was intercepted by UCLA... they ran the clock out and kept their 24 to 23 lead to win by 1 point. Sigh...If both our offense and defense had played better, we would have won... we were ahead 23 - 17 up until the last minurtes of the 4th quarter when UCLA made the touchdown to go ahead 1 point. Okrahomer Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 I sure thought the Cougs were going to pull this one off too. I dislike references to "moral victories", but I see BYU didn't fall completely out of the rankings--so it seems they did earn some respect with the closeness of the loss.

Okrahomer Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 They're tied for 22nd in the AP, They're just out of the rankings in the Caoches poll; and they're 24th in the power rankings. http://espn.go.com/college-football/rankings 1
Kenngo1969 Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 (edited) I thought there were some questionable coaching decisions. I thought BYU's questionable use of time outs would create clock management problems late in a close game. As much as I wish BYU would have won, it's tough for me to feel all that bad about a close loss to the tenth-ranked team in the nation. And there's no time for the team to feel sorry for itself: If it starts doing that, another handful of losses is on the horizon. What's done is done. Time for the Cougs to pick themselves up, dust themselves off, forget what happened last night and start focusing on the next game. Edited September 22, 2015 by Kenngo1969 2
longview Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 (edited) It was interesting to see BYU's Left Tackle (#72, don't know his name) struggle with defending his quarterback. He looks pretty big but made some mistakes. Looking forward to watching him and others on the team acquire more seasoning and maturity and become a much better team in the next several games. Kenngo1969 Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 now i think byu will eviscerate usu. bleh. It'll be about bloody time! They've "eviscerated" our quarterback two of the last three years!
Mars Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 (edited) last year was a great year for usu in provo. as for this year, i think usu's secondary is going to have to shore up some zone coverage mistakes and/or get pass rush on mangum if we expect to compete. byu has no running game (so far this year) and usu would probably crush it anyway. but if we can't get pressure, and let mangum go through his reads and hit those 6'6 behemoth receivers you have, it will be a long night for the aggies. but this is a byu conversation, so i will bow out.
